—Third Princess Yurisha Iscandar, to Queen Stasha Iscandar[6]

Yurisha Iscandar (YURISHA ISCANDAR, Yurisha Iscandar)[8] was an Iscandarian royal, the Third Princess of the planet Iscandar and a younger sister of Queen Stasha Iscandar. She was taken out of the Sanctel to serve as an envoy to the Earthlings, and subsequently played a significant role in the Great Garmillas War by leading the space battleship Yamato to Iscandar. Afterwards, she joined the Garmillas Provisional Government and served as a pillar of the Garmillas reconstruction and democratization efforts.

Biography[]

Early Life and mission to Earth[]

Third Princess Yurisha Iscandar was born into Iscandar's royal family as the younger sister of Queen Stasha Iscandar and Second Princess Sasha Iscandar. After her birth, she underwent the ritual to enter the Sanctel, which made her a static, yet immortal memory tied to the existence of the vault.[9] In 2191,[10] the Greater Garmillan Empire, based on Iscandar's double planet Garmillas, declared war on planet Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy. Garmillan bombings destroyed the planet's biosphere, and Queen Stasha decided to help by giving the Earthlings a Cosmo Reverse System to restore their dying world. Yurisha was taken out of the Sanctel to act as a messenger to the Earthlings.[N 1] She carried plans to build a Wave-motion Engine and was tasked with guiding a Earth vessel equipped with the engine to planet Iscandar where they would receive the device. Sasha was supposed to arrive a year after her, bringing the last component necessary for the engine to work.[1][11][12] Additionally, she was to serve as an observer for Stasha, judging the battleship's actions during the six-month journey.[13]

Yurisha and Mori in the immediate aftermath of their incident

In 2198, Yurisha arrived at her destination and made contact with the United Nations.[1] She was assigned an aid in the form of a young Earthling woman named Yuki Mori, who bore an uncanny resemblance to her. The two quickly became friends,[14] and Yurisha fell in love with Mori.[15] She gave Mori a holographic message capsule from Queen Stasha and formed a psychic connection with her. In May of 2198,[7] the two were caught in a possible terrorist bombing that destroyed their vehicle and severely injured Yurisha, and fell into a coma.[12]

The Voyage Home[]

Early voyage and awakening[]

Yurisha Capsule loaded on Yamato

A capsule holding the comatose Yurisha is loaded aboard Yamato

Yurisha's comatose body was secretly stored in the auto navigation room aboard Yamato, the battleship selected to make the voyage to Iscandar. As Yurisha was supposed to be the one showing the way to the planet to the Earthlings, the United Nations Cosmo Navy was forced to use the ship's computers are to draw a limited amount of navigational information from her mind to help the crew to make their way out of the Milky Way Galaxy.[12]

Yurisha ghost

Yurisha's ghost appears to the Gamiloid

About a month after the battleship's take-off, Yurisha's consciousness entered into contact with a Gamiloid robot that had been captured by the Earthlings. She asked the android who he was, and when he introduced himself, Yurisha responded she wasn’t asking his name. The robot tried to flee, but his systems failed before he could be captured. Following this event, a Yamato crewmember, Warrant Officer Yuria Misaki, began being mysteriously drawn to the automatic navigation room. During one visit, she saw Yurisha's consciousness and established a connection with her. Yurisha started to appear in a ghostly form to various crew members, and Misaki even dreamt of Yurisha and Mori's time in a hospital immediately after their incident.[16][17]

Yurisha appears in Mori's illusion and gives her the message capsule

In April of 2199,[18] while Yamato was under a psychic attack from a Zirel agent of the Greater Garmillan Empire, Misaki entered the automatic navigation room and Yurisha's consciousness took control of her body. During the attack, Mori, who had lost all memories of her past after the incident, was trapped in an illusion of her time in the hospital. In the illusion, Yurisha appeared and gave Mori Stasha's message capsule while reassuring her. Her sudden appearance shocked the attacker and interfered with her psychic abilities. Yurisha then used Misaki's body to wake Mori up and bring her back to reality. The two went to Yamato's central computer room, where Mori discovered that the battleship was preparing to warp to an unknown location. Yurisha realized that they were being led into a trap and that Garmillas was waiting at their destination to capture them. Mori, still under the impression of talking to Misaki, ordered the Third Princess to stay behind, unknowingly making herself a target for the enemy once again. As Mori left, Yurisha looked at a computer displaying data from the Wave-motion Engine and realized that Sasha had reached her destination. Eventually, the enemy was defeated and Yamato resumed normal navigation. Yurisha returned to the automatic navigation room and welcomed Misaki back, giving her control.[19]

Undercover aboard Yamato[]

Yurisha began taking control of Misaki's body saltuarily, releasing her pigtails and erasing her memories when she resumed control. While exploring the battleship, she stumbled upon the Wave-Motion Gun room and, upon being told its name, she inquired about its operation to XO Shiro Sanada. She expressed concerns about the weapon's immense destructive power. Before their conversation could conclude, Warrant Officer Toru Hoshina, a friend of Misaki, interrupted and took her away. Later, Yurisha reflected on her discussion with Sanada and became convinced that he was responsible for creating the weapon, which she considered a terrible weapon of mass destruction.[20]

Yurisha tells the landing party of Beemela 4's history

Days later,[21] she accompanied a landing party led by Lieutenant Susumu Kodai to the surface of the planet Beemela 4, where they intended to replenish their depleted stocks. While exploring the forested world, they encountered a large native arthropod, and Yurisha was picked up by the group's robot as they fled. Despite her comrades' fear, she found the chase amusing and even asked the giant creature if it was all right after it wrestled with her android companion. Suddenly, the alien creature left as they approached a large metallic structure, and she happily waved it goodbye. Kodai realized that the metallic structure looked like an Iscandarian vessel he had seen before, and Yurisha turned somber and confirmed that the wreck was indeed Iscandarian in origin. She explained that Iscandar had come to the planet centuries before to further its goal of bringing salvation to all sentient life throughout the cosmos. Curious, Kodai asked her if sentient life inhabited the planet, and she said that had once been the case. However, before she could elaborate, Yurisha fainted and fell to the ground, giving Misaki control of her body back.[22]

Yurisha introduces herself to Mori

After the mission to Beemela 4, rumors started spreading among the ship's crew that Mori was Yurisha undercover, fueled by a mutinous faction, but they were quickly debunked when the truth about Mori and Yurisha's past was publicly revealed by Admiral Juzo Okita, Yamato's Commanding Officer. With newfound knowledge of their past together, Mori visited the automatic navigation room to see Yurisha's body. She was interrupted by the Princess herself, once again in control of Misaki's body, who revealed herself to Mori and the rest of the crew.[12]

Back to her own Sea of Stars[]

After coming out in the open, Yurisha gave the Earthlings instructions on how to reactivate a subspace gate that would allow them to skip several light years of travel and arrive safely in the Large Magellanic Cloud. In his cabin, Okita thanked her for her help, but she replied by asking them to show gratitude through their actions rather than words. She later looked out of Yamato's second bridge as the battleship reached the Large Magellanic Cloud, basking in the galaxy's light and murmuring to herself that she had finally returned to her own sea of stars.[23]

Yurisha and Okita discuss

Yurisha talks to Okita about the Wave-motion Gun

Yurisha remained in control of Misaki's body for almost a month.[24] As Yamato approached the Tarantula Nebula, she stood on the ship's open-air deck and looked at the stars. She informed Hoshina, who was with her, that Iscandar was just beyond the nebula, and sadly stated that she wished she could've come home with Sasha. Suddenly, Yurisha felt Misaki's urge to hug the boy, and she lept towards him. She apologized for her sudden action and explained herself before asking Hoshina what a hug was. Later, Yurisha approached Admiral Okita as he exited the Wave-motion Gun room and provocatively told him her opinion on the weapon. The Admiral offered her some tea in his cabin, and the two continued their discussion. Yurisha affirmed that she had brought the wave-motion theory to Earth to help them traverse the stars, and that wave-motion energy could not be turned into a weapon under any circumstance. Okita explained that they had to build a weapon to protect themselves during the journey, and the princess concluded that Sanada had built the wave-motion gun with that purpose in mind. However, she believed that creating such a tool made Earth no different from their Garmillas adversaries. Yurisha questioned whether they would truly only use the Wave-motion Gun in self-defense, but Okita simply asked her to believe in them. Yurisha went to put down her tea cup, and after a brief moment of silence, she asked the Admiral why he hadn't questioned Iscandar's refusal to bring them the Cosmo Reverser directly. Okita believed that they were being tested by Yurisha and her people, but she replied that she was merely an observer for her sister Stasha. Okita asked her to observe if that was the case, so that Stasha could decide whether his race was worth saving.[13]

Yurisha returns to her body

Back in her own body, Yurisha re-introduces herself to Kodai

On June 11,[24] as Yamato traveled through the Rainbow Star Cluster, Yurisha stood in one of the battleship's observation decks. She heard the shipborne alarms blare as a Garmillan task force ambushed the vessel. Yurisha calmly stated that the enemy had arrived and was bringing war with them. At the height of the battle, Hoshina came to the observation deck and asked her to come back to safety with him. As they walked through the hallways, they encountered a group of Zaltzi soldiers that had infiltrated the Yamato, and Hoshina was shot. Recoiling at the sight of her bleeding companion, Yurisha screamed and fainted. At that moment, Misaki felt the urge to come back and stay at Hoshina's side, and Yurisha let go of the young Warrant Officer. Her consciousness returned to her own body, awakening it. After the end of the fighting, she approached Kodai on Yamato's 6th deck. The Lieutenant initially mistook her for Mori, who had just been kidnapped by the enemy, but Yurisha promptly corrected him and reintroduced herself.[25]

Saving Mori[]

Yurisha is held at gunpoint

Yurisha defiantly stands up to the mutineers

From Yamato's rear observation deck, Yurisha watched over a funeral held by Okita for the fallen soldiers of the previous battle. Later, she watched Kodai grieve Mori's kidnapping. Light-years away, on planet Leptapoda, Mori opened Yurisha's message capsule, making the princess aware of her location. Yamato was coincidentally heading to Leptapoda to resupply after the previous battle, and Kodai was to carry out a recon of the planet's surface. Yurisha silently boarded the Lieutenant's vehicle without being noticed, intending to carry out a rescue mission for Mori. She asked Kodai if he wanted to save her, startling him. She repeated the question numerous times, ignoring his resistance, and informed him that she knew Mori was being held on Leptapoda. Kodai decided to trust her and they departed. As they entered the planet's atmosphere, he questioned how she could know Mori's position, and Yurisha simply replied she loved Mori, asking him if he didn't too. Before he could answer, they were interrupted by two mutineers who had remained hidden aboard the plane and were holding them at gunpoint. The pair was under the impression that Yurisha was Mori, believing she had given up the ruse of pretending to be an Earthling. Annoyed, Yurisha stood up from her seat and faced their aggressors. Kodai tilted the plane to throw the two off balance, but one of the mutineers accidentally shot the piloting console, making them crash land on Leptapoda's surface.[15]

Itou's last words

Yurisha listens to Itou's last words

They were then taken hostage by a group of Garmillas androids and imprisoned. Yurisha began being taken away by two robots, but at that moment, a riot broke out in the prison facility they had been brought to. She found herself alone with Lt. J.G. Shinya Itou, one of the two mutineers and decided to go and rescue Mori alone. She explained her intentions to him and stopped to pray for a Garmillas guard who had died in the uprising. Much to her shock, Itou suddenly took up a gun and shot down a guard that was trying to sneak up on them before using the weapon to free Yurisha of her shackles. At his request, Yurisha did the same to his shackles, but before Itou could thank her, he was mortally wounded by the dying guard he had just shot. The mutineer raised his hand, and she grabbed it. With his last breath, Itou asked her to bring Yamato to Iscandar safely and save the Earth if she truly was an Iscandarian.[15]

As the dust settled over the uprising, Yurisha found Kodai in the facility's computer room. She informed him she knew they were taking Mori to planet Garmillas and showed him a map of the Salezar system, pointing out the world. The map revealed another world lying in orbit next to their enemy's origin planet, which, much to Kodai's shock, Yurisha identified as Iscandar.[15]

Approaching Salezar and Garmillas[]

Yamamoto Melda and Yurisha at the cafeteria

Ditz, Yamamoto, and Yurisha talk about love

After the riot, a Garmillas group of rebels took over the prison facility and met with a delegation from Yamato which included Yurisha. To her disappointment, the two groups did not agree to fight side by side, but the Garmillans shared information regarding their home planet and left behind a liaison in the form of Lower Storm Leader Merda Ditz. Weeks later, as Yamato left Leptapoda to head toward Salezar, Yurisha stepped into an argument between Ditz and Ensign Akira Yamamoto, one of the battleship's pilots. She happily informed Ditz that no one on Yamato was seeking revenge on Garmillas after the recent events. However, she was stopped by Yamamoto who rudely adressed her to ask why she hadn't revealed the relationship between Iscandar and Garmillas sooner. Her disrespectfullness annoyed Ditz, but Yurisha, now much more relaxed than the previous weeks, didn't mind. To answer Yamamoto's question, she asked her if they would have come to Iscandar if they knew it was right beside Garmillas. The three later went to Yamato's cafeteria. Yurisha immediately noticed and pointed at the special dessert of the day, Magellan Parfait. As they sat down to eat, Yamamoto commented on the love affair between two of her fellow crewmembers, prompting Yurisha to ask if she had anyone special like that, affirming she herself did. Ditz and Yamamoto tried to guess who Yurisha was referring to, but she confirmed that that person was not on board. Changing the subject, Yurisha urged Ditz to eat her parfait, saying it was delicious. Seeing the princess saddened by her reluctance, Ditz obliged. Yurisha commented that she looked cute while eating, embarassing her. Yamamoto changed the topic back to Yurisha’s special someone, asking her if they were waiting for her on Iscandar. Elusively, she simply replied that she had to tell them something once she got back home. Startled, Yamamoto asked if she intended to confess, but she replied that was not for her to decide.[2]

Yurisha talks to kodai

Yurisha urges Kodai to go save Mori

Yurisha donned a spacesuit and went to the first bridge, listening to Okita's speech as Yamato prepared to make the final warp before reaching the Salezar system. As soon as the ship warped out, it was targeted by Garmillan forces led by the Great Garmillas Empire's Supreme Leader, Abelt Desler.[2] A battle ensued, and Yamato flew over Garmillas's capital, ramming Desler's Presidential Office. At that moment, Yurisha sensed Mori's presence aboard a vessel fleeing from the capital. She repeatedly questioned Kodai's refusal to go save her, but he ignored her. Supreme Leader Desler detached a section of a space station from Garmillas's orbit and sent it plummeting toward his imperial capital. To save both Yamato and the Garmillan populace, Okita announced they would use the Wave-motion Gun against the falling structure. Yurisha realized that Okita was letting his actions speak for him, just as she had requested he do months prior. Reinvigorated, she told Kodai that it was time for everyone to do their best and that she would go rescue Mori herself- He cut her off, realizing that he had to do it himself. Okita allowed him to go and agreed to make her go with him after seeing her pout, much to her delight. The pair took off aboard a Cosmo Zero fighter, and she was thrilled to see her friends and comrades from Yamato, including both Ditz and Yamamoto, escorting them to their destination. During their flight, Kodai told her he had realized what he had to do, protect her, and urged his fighter to fly. Yurisha joined in, telling it to go faster and higher. Before they could reach the station where Mori was being held, the facility exploded. Kodai initially lost hope, but he spotted Mori floating in a spacesuit among the debris. Yurisha stood on the plane and watched the couple's reunion, smiling.[26]

Back on Iscandar[]

Yamato delegation

Yurisha and the rest of the Earthling delegation

After the battle was won, the three were welcomed back onto the Yamato, which landed in the capital city of Iscandar. Okita's health had worsened due to the stress of the previous battle, so Sanada put together a delegation to meet with Queen Stasha at her palace. Initially, he intended to bring only Yurisha, Kodai, and his assistant, but upon seeing the Princess clinging to her newly rescued friend, Sanada agreed to bring Mori along with them. When the delegation met with Stasha, she initially mistook Mori for the deceased Sasha, but Yurisha corrected her. Stasha refused to give the Earthlings the coveted Cosmo Reverse System, citing their use of Wave-motion Energy-powered weapons as the cause of her predicament. She asked Yurisha to tell her what she had observed, stating that she would only speak with the Earthlings afterward. Yurisha later confronted her sister, asking her to give away the CRS. She said that the Earthlings were not like them or the Garmillans and that they had only used Wave-motion Energy to defend themselves.[27]

Later, at dawn, Mori and Yurisha sat together in a flower field, and Mori asked what flowers they were looking at. Yurisha explained that they were Blue Crystals, which represented hidden lives and emotions in the Iscandarian flower language. She further explained that hidden lives are the sum of memories of all lives on a planet, crystalized beyond time and space as Wave-motion Energy. She told Mori that the Cosmo Reverse System used these memories to restore life, meaning it would never have worked unless the Yamato crew had come to Iscandar. Mori was amazed, but before she could ask any more questions, Yurisha hugged her, answering yes to an unasked inquiry.[27]

Eventually, Stasha agreed to give the Earth the Cosmo Reverse after Okita promised her that the Earth would never build Wave-motion Guns again. He even added this promise as a provision to the armistice that the crew had already signed with Garmillas after Desler's seeming death.[28] As the battleship began receiving the device's components, Ditz stood on top of one of the turrets watching her home planet. When Yurisha approached her, she asked her where they would be going from there. The two later listened as Yamato's internal radio broadcasted a message recorded by an Earthling captured soldier that had crash-landed on Iscandar. On July 27, after staying on the planet for 11 days,[29] Yamato prepared to finally depart towards Earth. Mori, Kodai, and Yamamoto met Ditz and Yurisha on the dock where the battleship was anchored, and the Princess announced she would go to Garmillas to help their people rebuild in the wake of Desler's fall. She gifted Mori a vase with Blue Crystal blossoms as a symbol of the bond they shared. She saw Yamato off from the dock, bidding farewell to "her other self".[27]

Time on Garmillas[]

Yurisha Meld Rokrohk

The rokrohk lands on Yurisha's arm

After the war between Garmillas and Earth ended and Desler's dictatorship fell, a provisional government took over with the intention of democratizing the Greater Garmillan Empire. Yurisha joined the new administration in order to fill the void left behind by the figure of the strong Supreme Leader and become the spiritual pillar of the Garmillan reconstruction effort.[4] In September, she joined Ditz and General Ghader Talan in a meeting with Admiral Gul Ditz and Elisa Domel of the new government, and Domel's rokrohk landed on her arm.[30]

Provvisional government

Yurisha and the rest of the Great Garmillas Empire's provisional government

Yurisha continued to remain on Garmillas for several years until early 2205, eventually becoming the center of Garmillan politics. Towards the end of her stay, the government discovered that planet Garmillas was approaching the end of its planetary life cycle and would collapse in less than fifty years. The Greater Garmillan Empire, now allied with a faction led by the surprisingly still-alive Desler, began searching for a new world to migrate the Garmillas race to. Stasha leaked the location of planet Garmann, the original homeworld of the Garmillans that the Iscandarians had kidnapped them from centuries prior. However, the world had fallen under the control of another interstellar power known as the Bolar Federation.[5]

Yurisha used the situation to leave Garmillas and return to Iscandar, as per her sister's wishes. A mass-migration plan toward Garmann was announced, and the first democratically elected government took office.[5]

The Iscandar Incident[]

Battle over Garmillas and Iscandar[]

Starsha Yurisha

Yurisha worriedly looks at Stasha after hearing news of Garmann's liberation

In August of 2205,[7] Desler's fleet and the Garmillas military teamed up to liberate Garmann by force. Ditz, who now served as Stasha and Yurisha's military attaché, realyed the news, and informed them that the planet could still be a battlefield by the time the first immigrants reached it. This prompted Yurisha to worry about how far the situation had escalated.[31]

Yurisha pleads to Starsha to open Sanctel

Yurisha begs her sister to open the Sanctel

On October 16,[7] an unknown enemy attacked planet Garmillas with a vast force of spear-like weapons. These weapons attached to the planet's surface and began sending shock waves to hasten its collapse. Yurisha, Ditz, and her sister observed the situation from Iscandar. Ditz suggested the two royals take shelter, fearing that the attack could inflict damage on Iscandar too. However, despite her and her sister's worries, Stasha remained still. To Yurisha's shock, she realized that whoever the enemy was, their target wasn't Garmillas, but planet Iscandar.[32] As a result of the attack, Garmillas collapsed, leaving only a fleet of 100,000 civilian immigrants and Desler and his forces as survivors. The convoy landed on Iscandar to seek shelter, but the planet started to move out of its orbit unnaturally. As the planet's ocean froze, Ditz approached Stasha to request the opening of the Sanctel to store the civilians. Yurisha denied her request, stating that the vault was a sanctuary open only to the royal family, and those who hadn't undergone the correct ritual could not enter it. However, she also believed that allowing the refugees to enter the Sanctel was the best course of action, and later privately pleaded with her sister to make the refugees undergo the ritual and enter the Sanctel. Stasha refused, stating that Yurisha was too young to understand what the ritual meant for a human, but she remained adamant that it was the only way to ensure their survival. Seeing her appeal had failed, she turned to the capsule holding Sasha, Stasha's daughter, who had been kept as a disembodied spirit. She meekly asked her sister if that was the reason Sasha had been kept like that.[33]

Iscandar had been warped away to the Vorzon system by the enemy, the Garmillas forces began pursuing it and a battle erupted on Iscandar. Suddenly, Yurisha noticed that Yamato appeared in Iscandar's orbit leading its fleet into combat, and informed her sister. The enemy, now identified as Dezariam, retreated and made a plan to destroy the nearby planet Garmario to use its energy to warp Iscandar again. The joint Earth-Garmillas fleet launched an operation to destroy Garmario before Dezariam could execute its plan using their Wave-motion Guns. Yurisha told Stasha that Yamato was ready to do whatever it took, and provocatively asked her sister what they were going to do. During the operation, the Dezariam commander moved Iscandar into the danger zone to use it as a shield. Yurisha contacted the commanders of the Earth fleet on her sister's behalf and asked them to shoot a specific point on Iscandar's surface. This would cause a massive burst of energy from the Sanctel, which would push Iscandar out of the danger zone. Despite a wave-motion shield being raised to protect the capital and refugees, the energy released sent a shock wave that washed over the city. Yurisha tried to make Stasha take cover, but she remained still on the royal palace's balcony.[34]

Garmario was successfully destroyed,[34] but the Dezarian forces continued to tow Iscandar away. While observing the situation, Yurisha commented to Stasha that it appeared as if the Dezariam fleet was waiting for someone. She concluded that Desler wouldn't be satisfied with just rescuing his people and would attempt to save them as well. She then provoked her sister by stating that it was Garmillas's nature, which the Iscandarians had cultivated.[35]

Unpredictable life and death[]

Yurisha hugs Starsha

Stasha called for a ceasefire between Dezariam and the Earth-Garmillas joint fleet. She promised to give up Iscandar if the Dezarians allowed the refugees to leave the planet.[35] However, her real intention was to self-destruct the Sanctel, the enemy's true objective, and the entire world with it. Yurisha tried to reason with her, asking if she had ever thought about reopening the vault and stop her fruitless salvation efforts. She believed humans would not otherwise be able to cease all conflict and reach the state of their creators, Archelias. She begged Stasha to open the Sanctel for the Garmillans, but the Queen again refused. She stated that Yurisha had been taken out of the Sanctel for too little time, and that with time she'd have come to understand that eternity and happiness couldn't coexist. Yurisha stayed behind, and watched as her sister appraoched Kodai and Desler with the intention of revealing to them the truth about the vault. After she did so, the two sisters stood by the sea and prepared to give up their lives. Stasha explained that all life eventually comes to an end, and that was what made it meaningful. When their sister had died for the Earth, she could have recreated her via the Sanctel but chose not to do so for this reason. She firmly believed that the static immortality offered by the Sanctel was not life and hoped to instead give her sister's name to the first life born on Iscandar in eons. She apologized to Yurisha, stating that since she had only been recreated from the Sanctel a few years prior, she probably could not understand her words. Yurisha replied affirmatively, but with tears streaming down her face, she embraced her sister and asked her to hug her.[9]

Yurisha asks Stasha to live out her life as a human

Before Stasha could press the self-destruct button, Desler turned his battlecarrier around and attacked the Dezarian flagship, intending to sacrifice himself to let the Queen live.[9] Another battle broke out, and Yurisha was surprised to receive a coded transmission from the Earth fleet. Led by Kodai and the young Warrant Officer Ryusuke Domon, the Earthlings had launched a rescue operation to save her and Stasha. Following their plan, the two went to their palace's basement, where a dimensional submarine emerged to take them away. Kodai and Domon begged Stasha to leave with them but she still hesitated. Carrying the capsule holding Sasha in her arms, Yurisha asked her to go. She stated that they too were alive and that, even if it would be for just a moment, she wanted to live a free, unpredictable life.[6]

Stasha was finally convinced, and they boarded the dimensional submarine where nurse Miyako Kyozuka made them undergo a quick medical checkup. As they traversed subspace, a Dezarian weapon began following them, and Yurisha held Kyozuka's hand. After they made their escape, Stasha self-destructed Iscandar, taking down the remaining Dezarian forces. Their vehicle landed on Desler's flagship, and Stasha said her final goodbye to the Garmillas Supreme Leader before disappearing into a swarm of lights. Yurisha explained that, with the Sanctel gone, they too would cease to exist. However, since Sasha had been born out of her sister's love with an Earthling, she would not share their same fate. She gave a tender look at the capsule and gave it to Kyozuka.[6]

With tears of emotion, she gave her niece a plea to have fun on Earth, before giving a smile and disappearing.[6]

Appearance[]

Yuki Mori and Yurisha by Michio Murakawa

Yurisha looked similar to Yuki Mori

Yurisha Iscandar was an Iscandarian woman who, due to her connection with the Sanctel, maintained the same youthful appearance for many years.[9] Like all other known Iscandarians, she had extremely long, pale blonde hair, as well as purplish eyes and long eyelashes.[25][3] She bore an uncanny resemblance to Yuki Mori.[19][25]

Yurisha's outfit during her mission to Earth

During her mission to Earth, Yurisha wore a bodysuit almost identical to her sister Sasha's. It was primarily white, accented with purple and adorned with golden details. The top featured a deep-cut neckline that extended down to her waist, which was covered only by a see-through white cloth and embellished with pink gemstones. The lower part of the outfit resembled a leotard with high-cut sides. The same see-through white material separated the sleeves from the shoulders and the leotard from the thigh-high stockings, which ended into heeled boots. Her clothing also incorporated typical Iscandarian swirling patterns.[25][3]

During her time as part of the Garmillas Provisional Government, she wore a white dress decorated in swirling patterns and with a high collar. A deep-cut neckline extended until under hear breasts, with gemstones the neckline hanging from the collar. The dress had long, flared sleeves.[36]

After returning to Iscandar, she wore a simpler white dress that resembled her sister's. The dress left her upper back exposed and featured a cut-out that extended from her navel to her chest. The detached shoulders flared significantly and were adorned with gems hanging from their ends. Pink gemstones decorated her exposed shoulders, with three on each side. Both the dress and the sleeves had a blue hue at their lowest portions.[37]

Personality[]

Yurisha Iscandar was the seemingly contradictory mix of strong principles and an innocent, almost child-like attitude toward the world. While in psychic control of Yuria Misaki, Yurisha regularly wandered the decks of Yamato, focusing almost entirely on her own interests and paying only minimal attention to the circumstances around her.[17][20] She had a playful nature, which she sometimes displayed even in moments of danger.[2][22]

Despite her innocent demeanor, Yurisha never hesitated to defend herself and her values. Like Queen Stasha, she believed in the importance of all life in the universe and had a deeply caring nature for all living things.[15][20][22] She openly expressed disagreement with opposing moral or ethical stances and confronted those she disagreed with, often using sharp, yet polite, words to express her ideas.[20][35] She understood and feared the destructive potential of wave-motion energy,[20] but unlike her more idealistic sister, she was pragmatic in her outlook, even coming to defend Yamato's usage of the Wave-motion Gun after realizing they had only used it in self-defense and to protect innocent lives.[26][27] She could also show unwavering courage in the face of personal threats, and was ready to endanger herself to save those she cared about.[15][26] Yurisha was also skilled in politics and diplomacy, always working to further the salvation of sentient life.[2][20][4][5] She had a natural ability to bring harmony between people, although it's unclear whether she was fully aware of this talent.[2][14]

While her short existance outside of the Sanctel meant she initially did not fully grasp the sorrow that could be brought by immortality,[9][34] she came to understand Stasha's opposition to the vault and wished to live a fullfilling lige detatched of it.[6] Perhaps for the same reason, she seemed to have a weak understanding of physical gestures of affection like hugging before her time aboard Yamato.[13] She had a tendency to play with her hair while speaking.[12][25]

Yurisha cared deeply about her sisters[9][13] and her niece Sasha.[6] She had great respect for Stasha and her role as Queen[20][27] but was ready to oppose her whenever she believed her actions to be mistaken, often balancing her indecisive nature.[27][34] Yurisha also stated that she loved Yuki Mori and showed initiative to save her after her kidnapping.[15][26] After Mori's rescue, she clung to her on various occasions.[27] Despite this, she was ready to let her go when the time came for her to return to Earth and didn't seem to mind Lieutenant Susumu Kodai's love for her.[15][27] During her time on Yamato, she formed a friendship with Lower Storm Leader Merda Ditz,[2] who would become her companion in the following years,[30][31] and with Kodai and Ensign Akira Yamamoto, despite both of them initially being put off by her unusual behavior.[15][2] She also came to respect Admiral Juzo Okita despite his usage of the Wave-motion Gun.[26]

Mori yurisha manga

Mori and Yurisha talk as the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster rages on

In the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 manga adaptation the effects of Yurisha's occasional possession leave a much greater psychological distress on Yuria Misaki than in the anime.[38] Yurisha is also consistently depicted with a much more carefree and childish personality and lacks the more serious side of her anime counterpart.[39]

Since Yuki Mori is a clone of Yurisha created after her incident, the two do not know each other until they meet aboard Yamato. After Yurisha revealed herself while controlling Misaki's body, Mori was assigned as her assistant, causing her absence during the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster. While they were talking in her cabin as the battle raged on, Yurisha asked Mori to bring her her holographic message capsule.[40][41]

Behind the scenes[]

Yurisha is voiced by Hoko Kuwashima in Japanese and Mallorie Rodak in English, and was designed by Nobuteru Yuki.[14]

Her name is spelled "Ulyssia" in the english subtitles for Star Blazers 2199: A Voyage to Remember", presumably after the name "Ulysses", the latin name for the greek mythical hero Odysseus, and "eureshya" in the link to her Character entry in the official Space Battleship Yamato 2199 website.[3] The official spelling "Yurisha" is briefly seen on screen in the theater scene in "Gatlantis, the Cursed Children".

Her Character entry in the official Space Battleship Yamato 2199 website lists her as being 19 years old, her CHARACTERS entry on the official starblazers-yamato.net website for Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Journey lists her age as "unknown".[3][37] This could be a case of retconning, or Yurisha's physical age after being recreated from the Sanctel.

  1. In the time between her being taken out of the Sanctel and her departure toward the Earth, she may or may not have met Supreme Leader Abelt Desler. In "The Planet That We Head For" Desler asks Yuki Mori, who he believes to be Yurisha, if he has forgotten him. However, the Supreme Leader could have been bluffing, so whether he and the real Yurisha ever met is up for debate.
