The Yamato Revolt[4] was a brief mutiny instigated by the former crew of space battleship Yamato against the larger United Nations Cosmo Force. The revolt started due to the UNCF command refusal to allow Yamato to travel towards Terezart to respond to Teresa's call for help.[3]

Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima discover Teresa's hologram

Following the 8th Floating Continent Recapture Operation, on December 2, 2202, the former members of Yamato's crew recieved visions of their deceased loved ones carrying a message from the goddess Teresa of Terezart, inciting them to board Yamato once again.[5] When on December 8 they met to celebrate the anniversary of their return from Iscandar and the death of Admiral Okita on Hero's Hill, they discovered that almost all of them had recieved similar visions. This prompted Lieutenant Commander Shiro Sanada to investigate Yamato's flight recorder, discovering an holographic image of Teresa. This convinced Lieutenant Susumu Kodai, the ship's former tactics officer, that the message they had recieved was a call for help. Later that day, Kodai was contacted by Klaus Keyman, a Garmillas undercover agent and aide to the Greater Garmillan Empire's Ambassador Loren Burrell. Keyman invited Kodai to a meeting with the Ambassador, who had found out Teresa had contacted them.[6]

Thanks to the help of the Lunar Air Corps instructor Akira Yamamoto and the commander of transport ship Kisaragi, Kenjiro Ota, Kodai reached the Garmillan Embassy on the Moon. Burrell explained to Kodai the tale of Teresa, and revealed to him that the signal Sanada had traced was coming from a sector of space in which the Gatlantis Empire had been unusually active. Burrell then ordered Keyman to lead Kodai to the time fault. Discovering the existance of the time fault provided another reason for the Yamato crew to rebel against the UNCF and the Earth Federation.[7]

The revolt[]

Yamato takes off[]

Following his recent discoveries, and General Commanding Director Heikuro Todo's refusal to approve Yamato's journey toward Terezart, Kodai and the rest of the crew decided to start a revolt. As Yamato's executive officer, Sanada appointed the tactics officer Acting Captain. The battleship was at undergoing repairs at an underground dock, but as UNCF headquarters would soon find out, the cameras present in the area had been jammed and the ship had been moved to the former underground capital's underwater dock to prepare the launch in secret. General Kotetsu Serizawa and Commander Todo dispatched the Emergency Deployment Unit to Yamato's supposed location, but they were unable to find the ship. In the meantime, the crew of the battleship reactivated the decommissioned Kongo-class Kirishima at a spaceport where Hajime Hirata, Yamato's chief accountant, was stationed,[8] and used it to reach the underwater dock.[3]

Todo gives his ultimatum

Todo broadcasted an ultimatum to the rebellious battleship, expressing his compassion and understanding, and recognizing their contributions to Earth’s restoration. As Iscandar had once saved Earth, Yamato’s crew now wanted to go and rescue the being that called them for help. He reminded them, however, that their mission may endanger Earth. The Director asked the crew to surrender the battleship, stating that they wouldn't face any repercussions, and gave them five minutes to consider his offer. Even though Kodai gave his crewmembers the possibility to surrender themselves to the UNCF, none of them did.[3]

Emergency Deployement Unit

The Emergency Deployement Unit storms the dock

At the end of the five minutes, the Emergency Deployement Unit stormed the dock and blew up the facility's controls, preventing the flooding of the dock and blocking Yamato's take off procedure. A small team headed by Lieutenant J.G. Susumu Yamazaki was dispatched by the rebels to activate the controls manually. As water started to flood the area, the UNCF task force was forced to retreat, but Yamazaki's team also remained stranded in the control room and was thus captured. Yamato then menaged to take off with relative ease, even destroying a military satellite that had been sent by headquarters to stop them.[3] The ship's chief navigator, Daisuke Shima, initially refused to join the rebellion. However, he eventually changed his mind and reached the battleship by joining the Emergency Deployment Unit,[3] pretending to be under direct orders from Serizawa to treat with Kodai.[8]

The Lunar Air Corps[]

The Yamamoto team goes AWOL

At the same time, near the orbit of Jupiter, the Lunar Air Corps was engaged in an excercitation together with the Yamanami Fleet. Having recieved the news of Yamato's disertion, the eight pilots of the Yamamoto Team, all former members of the battleshipì's crew, idecided to go AWOL and join up with the rebellious battleship.

Captain Osamu Yamanami ordered the Apollo Norm's air wing to move out and stop the disertors. However, the Garmillan embassy sent Lieutenant Klaus Keyman in to help the former Yamato aviators reach their destination. The Lieutenant released an EMP strike, scramblying the pursuing fighters' instruments, Yamamoto's team managed to escape.[2]

Yamato VS Andromeda[]

Yamato uses the ARGO system

Following the Air Corps disertion, Yamanami and his flagship Andromeda personally moved in to stop Yamato at the asteroid belt. The Captain tried to negotiate with the muteneers, but Kodai ramained adamant in his stance against the Cosmo Force's current line of conduct. The negotiations broke down into active combat. Andromeda attacked Yamato, but the battleship protected herself using the ARGO system, pulling together the debris of the Asteroid Belt and creating a thick layer of rocks sturdy enough to stop Andromeda's shock cannons. As soon as its shields were put online, Yamato rammed Andromeda and escaped. Before the Earth's flagship could began a pursuit, a video message from UNCF HQ announced that Yamato's mutiny had been ratified by the Earth Federation President and that the battleship was allowed to continue its journey towards Terezart. Behind the scenes, Ambassador Burrell had met the President to pressure him into pardoning the Yamato muteneers.[2]
