This article is about timeline inconsistencies in Space Battleship Yamato 2199, its side materials, and sequels. For the timeline of the continuity established by them, see timeline of events (2199).

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its side materials and sequels suffer from a series of timeline inconsistencies, some of which were clarified by later publications. This page highlights them and gives the official fix, if any had been given.

The First and Second Battle of Mars[]

2nd battle of Mars

The Second Battle of Mars, as depicted in "The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202"

The Second Battle of Mars is introduced in the first episode of 2199, "Messenger of Iscandar", where Yuki Mori mentions it while about the Garmillas bombings of the Earth. Later, in "Out of the Forest of Memory", Sanada's flashback, set in 2193, seems to imply that Operation K2 is to take place in just a couple of months. Additionally, the video bonus Earth Organization Commentary for Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Voyage of Remembrance states that a counterattack in the Mars sector was held in 2193 and that it made the Garmillas Empire resort to the usage of planet bombs. Lastly, the Space Battleship Yamato 2199 “Yamato Project” Record Collection, sets both the First and Second Battle of Mars as having taken place in 2193.

Yamamoto akio flashback

Akira and Akio Yamamoto in the flashback in "Graveyard of the Universe"

However, there are various problems with this. Firstly, in "Graveyard of the Universe", in the flashback scenes during which she talks with her brother Akio just before he died in the Second Battle of Mars, Akira Yamamoto looks much closer to her age in 2199 than she should be if the scenes were set in 2193 (as her biography in the official Space Battleship Yamato 2199 website states she was born in 2179); secondly, Tokugawa states in "Graveyard of the Universe" that Okita's son has died in battle in 2198, but his later conversation with Okita in "Memories of the Blue Planet" confirms he died in the Second Battle of Mars.

Solution[]

The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202 gives the official dates for the First and Second Battle of Mars: June 5, 2192, and February 20, 2198. The First Battle of Mars is set as the event that triggered the Garmillas usage of planet bombs, while the Second Battle of Mars is set much later, following both of Tokugawa's statements and Yamamoto's age in the flashbacks.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199[]

Day count[]

The day count at the end of most of Space Battleship Yamato 2199's episodes,[1] sometime create inconcistencies with the following episode.

Under a Rainbow Sun - Prison Planet 17[]

Zaltzi Infiltrator dead

The body of Sargeant Beris Reitse, showing no sign of decay despite 15 days having supposedly passed from her death

The day count at the end of "Under a Rainbow Sun" states that 230 days are left during  "Prison Planet 17". This is a jump of fifteen days between the two episodes, as the day count at the end of "They're Coming!" states that there are 245 days left during "Under a Rainbow Sun".

This seems unreasonable, as the first scene in "Prison Planet 17" sees the crew of Yamato holding a funeral for the victims of the recent Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster, which is depicted in the previous episode. The bodies seen on screen show signs of decay, making it somewhat unbelievable that fifteen days have passed since the two episodes.

Possible Solution[]

It's possible that the day count specifically refers to the events that take place at Leptapoda later in the episode, while the first scene takes place soon after the previous one.

Prison Planet 17 - The Planet That We Head For[]

Mori Yuki Garmillas

Yuki on Garmillas

The day count at the end of "Prison Planet 17" sets the next episode as taking place 19 days after it. This is believable when we take in consideration the time Yamato had to spend on Leptapoda to be repaired from the damage it suffered beforehand, but it becomes questionable when considering Yuki Mori and the UX-01 supposedly reached Garmillas in the same ammount of time Yamato needed to be repaired and head for the same planet.

Possible Solution[]

It's possible that the day count refers solely to the time Yamato spent on Leptapoda and its journey to Garmillas, while Yuki's part of the episode is set in a completely different timeframe. This would help to explain why she seems to spend much more time on Garmillas than what Yamato seems to take to reach her on the planet.

The Forever War[]

In "The Forever War" two contrasting dates are given: while hosting YRA Radio Yamato, Misaki states that two months have passed since Yamato left Iscandar, and eight months have passed since the ship's take off from Earth. This is completely impossible as Yamato's date of departure from Iscandar (as given in The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202) is July 27. Its take off date (which can be roughly calculated with on screen informations in "Messenger of Iscandar" and is given in The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202) is February 11. If it's been two months since July, it's obviously impossible for eight months to have passed since February.

Additionally, following the day count given in the previous episode and the official take off date from Earth, the events of "The Forever War" are set on September 21.

Solution[]

The Blu-Ray for Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark confirms that the writers wrongfully assumed that Yamato's take off date was January 17, 2199, which is actually the date of Operation M as shown in "Messenger of Iscandar". Considering this slip up, the time setting of the episode becomes consistent with the day count and Misaki's "two months since Iscandar" statement.

Out of the Forest of Memory[]

The third flashbacks in "Out of the Forest of Memory" depicts the launch of the destroyer Yukikaze prior to Operation M. The event is dated as taking place "10 months before" the events of the episode, which the day count at the end of "A Choice for the Future" sets on May 12, 2199, meaning the events of the flashback would happen in July of 2198. However, Operation M takes place on January 17, as depicted in "Messenger of Iscandar"

Solution[]

The official 2024 calendar TRAJECTORY OF YAMATO states that Yukikaze took off in July 2198 as part of an advance team for Operation M2.

Odyssey of the Celestial Ark[]

Mikage Kiryu diary

Mikage Kiryu registering her diary entry

Mikage Kiryu's diary[]

Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark opening ends with the written sentence "7 MONTHS SINCE YAMATO‘S DEPARTURE FROM EARTH", however, Kiryu's entry in her personal diary states that one month has passed since her departure from Iscandar. Considering the dates given previously, this is impossible.

Solution[]

As stated above, this inconsistency is due to the wrong date being used for Yamato's first take off, if 7 months have actually passed from Operation M, the two dates coincide. The official 2024 calendar Trajectory of YAMATO confirms this by setting the date of Yamato's encounter with the Gatlantean forces on August 27.

Yamato's return date[]

Hijikata riots todo

The mission clock seen on screen

The epilogue of the movie shows a sequence of Todo and Hijikata discussing about Yamato's return. Todo says that only 41 days are left for the battleship to return to the Earth in time, which is confirmed by a screen setting this conversation on the 324th mission day. However the scene ends with Yamato actually appearing in the outer Solar System, but since the battleship's return is set by "Memories of the Blue Planet" on December 8th, while the "41 days left" would set the current date on the 1st of January.

Solution[]

Once again, this inconsistency is due to the wrong date being used for Yamato's first take off, if 324 days have actually passed from Operation M, the dates coincide.

Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love[]

Timeline of the Desler Era[]

Dessler Era timeline

Desler Era timeline

The dates given in the official timeline for the Desler Era given in the Yamato 2202 Chapter 5 Program Book, as well as those given in the flashbacks in "O Teresa, Cry for Dessler!" are calculated going back from the year 2202 (for example, the events set in 2178 are dated "24 years ago". However, the episode itself is set in March of 2203, as stated in The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202.

Decisive Battle off Mars[]

The 2024 official calendar Trajectory of YAMATO states that the Burrell Fleet was launched toward Mars on May 16, however, fleet diagrams for the battle included in The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202, as well as the events shown on screen, state that the fleet was already there by the start of the battle on May 14.
