The Yamamoto Squadron, also called the Cosmotiger Squadron, was a fighter unit of the Lunar Squadron under the command of Ensign Akira Yamamoto made out of former members of the battleship Yamato's air wing. The squadron was tasked with the training of young Lunar Squadron recruits with Yamamoto herself often acting as Instructor due to Instructor Saburo Kato's repeated absences caused by his son's illness.[1]
On December 25, 2202,[3] the squadron participated in an exercise with the Yamanami Fleet at the asteroids near Jupiter. Once they got word of Yamato's revolt against the UNCF, eight members of the squadron went AWOL to join the battleship. They faced off against the Apollo Norm's air wing, but managed to escape thanks to the help of a Garmillan Lieutenant from the Garmillas embassy.[2]

Michio Murakawa's artbook Yamato Iconics includes an illustration of Yamamoto in her undersuit from Space Battleship Yamato 2202. Unlike the original version of the illustration, which included the logo of the clothing manufacturer Under Armour on Yamamoto's clothes,[4] the one included in Yamato Iconics has the words "UNCF Moonbase Cosmotiger Squadron."[5]
The unit is also referred to as "コスモタイガー隊" (Kosumotaigā-tai) on screen.[2] "隊" is a generic word for various types of formation, including squadrons.[6] The English dub translates its names as Cosmo Tiger Team and Yamamoto Team.[2]
