Wave Motion shield Yamato

Yamato activates its Wave-motion Shield

The Wave-motion Shield, formally known as the Dimensional Wave-motion Amplitude Defense Wall[1] or as the Quantum Wave Barrier,[1] and identified by the acronym D.W.S.[2] is a type of shielding technology that utilizes wave-motion energy to create a protective field around a wave-motion engine-equipped spacecraft. It was first developed by the United Nations for the UNCN battleship Yamato late into the Great Garmillas War. This technology would give the Earthlings a massive advantage during the war and even against their future enemies such as the Gatlantis Empire. The Greater Garmillan Empire developed their own version of the Wave-Motion Shield called the Geshtam Wall.

The Wave-motion Shield works by applying the principle of quantum mechanics according to which a particle's position can only be predicted probabilistically, and that probability follows the probability amplitude that can be calculated from a wave function. By diverting the energy output of a ship's wave-motion engine and resonating it through a wave-motion coil,[3] it changes the quantum mechanical properties of the space around the craft it's equipped on, creating a protective bubble capable of dissipating beam weapons and explosive force stochastically.[1][4][5] The Wave-motion Shield didn't initially fully protect the hull against physical impact such as a ship-to-ship collision, although the damage was less than it would be without the shield active.[6] Following a series of upgrades carried out around 2201,[7][8][9] the Wave-motion Shield of the space battleship Yamato was capable of much greater protection against physical impacts.[10]

It can only work for about 20 minutes. This time limit can quickly diminish if the ship is under sustained attack.[1][4] The output of a Wave-motion Shield is measured in TPa.[11]

History[]

2199: The Garmillas War[]

Starsha message

Stasha's message to the Earthlings

In the year 2198 the United Nations recieved technological support from the planet Iscandar in the form of the wave-motion theory.[12] This new understanding of technology allowed the Earthlings to build the wave-motion engine in order to travel at FTL speed and reach Iscandar. There Queen Stasha would gift them a device that could heal their homeplanet's biosphere that had been destroyed by the Great Garmillas War.[13][14]

The ship chosen to undertake this journey was the space battleship Yamato, for this ship Lt. Commander Shiro Sanada developed two pieces of technology utilising Wave-motion Energy: the Wave-motion Gun and the Wave-motion Shield. The Shield proved to be indispensible during Yamato's first year of operation, saving the ship from destruction on multiple occasions, including during the Second Attack on Yamato, the First Battle against Domel, the Planet Balun Breakthrough Operation and the Battle of the Imperial Capital.[4][5][6][14]

The Wave-motion Shield could also be projected inside of Yamato's engine section, shielding it from radiation produced by the Wave-motion Engine.[15]

2203: The Gatlantis Campaign[]

Dreadnoughts Saturn rear view

The Dreadnought-class was equipped with a Wave-motion Shield

Following the end of the Garmillas War, the newfound Earth Federation began a remilitarization effort utilizing the technology the Earth had developed in the previous conflict, including Wave-motion Shields, which were equipped on most of the new UNCN ship classes, including the Dreadnought-class, the backbone of the Earth Federation's navy.[16][17]

Suicide Attack Ship Eater I

Gatlantis developed the Eater I to counter the Earth's Wave-motion Shield

This gave the Earth Federation an enormous advantage against its enemies. For this reason, once the Gatlantis Empire decided to invade the Solar system in 2203, they developed the Suicide Attack Ship Eater I, a large fighter capable of cutting through Wave-motion Shields. It saw heavy use during the Battle of Saturn and the subsequent battles of the Gatlantis Campaign.[17][18]

2203-2205: Asuka and the Desler Fleet[]

Wave deployement round

The Asuka's Type 4 Missiles were the next step in wave-motion shielding technology

Following the end of the Gatlantis Campaign, the Earth Federation greatly demilitarized, stopping the production of Wave-motion Gun-equipped ships and converting ships previously in construction into experimental crafts. One such ship was the modified Dreadnought-class supply carrier Asuka, which was equipped with the new Type 4 Wave Barrier Rounds, a newly developed space projectile capable of deploying a short-term wave barrier in any area other than the ship's own hull. At the same time the Greater Garmillan Empire's Weapons Development Agency developed the Deusura III, a special battlecarrier which would serve as Abelt Desler's personal flagship for his Desler fleet. The Deusura III was equipped with the first garmillan wave-motion shielding technology, the Geshtam Wall.[19]

The two ships would both first see action in late 2205 during the Planet Galman Liberation Operation and the Iscandar Incident.[20][21] The Asuka-class would later be mass produced by the Earth Federation.[22]

Notes[]

  • Junichiro Tamamori has described the Wave-motion Shield as working like an electromagnetic field.[23]
