Yamato fires its Wave-motion Gun

The Wave-motion Gun, also formally known as Dimensional Wave-motion Implosion Emitter (DWIE) is a powerful weapon of mass destruction that uses Wave-motion Energy. It was originally created by Iscandar a long time ago, and later independently developed by the U.N.C.F. between 2198 and 2199. Coincidentally, around the same time, the Greater Garmillan Empire was also experimenting with their own version of a Wave-motion weapon, the Desler cannon.

Name[]

The Wave-motion Gun is known by several other names besides its more common title. It is frequently called the Dimensional Wave Cannon,[1] which can also be spelled as Dimensional-Wave Cannon or dimensional-wave cannon.[2] Its formal name is the Dimensional Wave-Motion Implosion Emitter,[3] abbreviated as DWIE.[4] Other acronyms used to refer to the weapon include D.W.I.R.D.[5] and DWM EE - GUN.[6]

The standard variant of the weapon is also called Convergence Wave-motion Gun, to differentiate it from the Dispersion Wave-motion Gun variant.[7]

Technical specifications[]

Complete Wave motion gun and engine diagram

A diagram showing space battleship Yamato's Wave-motion Gun and Engine

The Wave-motion Gun is a ship-borne weapon powered by a Wave-motion Engine. The engine generates extra dimensions, curled up as Calabi-Yau manifolds,[8] which are released along the line of fire. As these dimensions displace our universe, they begin to create another universe, generating supergravity that causes them to collapse into micro black holes[3] due to their excessive mass compared to their small size. The evaporation of these micro black holes emits Hawking radiation,[9] which is then released along the line of fire, accompanied by a chain reaction of extra dimensions, whose membranes' vibration is a manifestation of Wave-motion Energy.[3][10][11][N 1] The energy released by the Wave-motion Gun is similar to a reproduction of the Big Bang.[11] The DWM EE is based on a special solution of the Buchinsky Wave-motion Equation.[8]

The Wave-motion Gun is directly linked with the Wave-motion Engine and is divided into a "hot section" consisting of the engine and a "cannon section" housing the Wave-motion Gun. The cannon section includes the plunger bolt, the pressure chamber, the first to third full-wave rectifier circuits, the Wave-motion Gun muzzle, the first and second locking fixtures, and the muzzle closing valves. The transmission pipe from the Wave-motion Engine is connected to the pressure chamber, and the plunger bolt is a separate structure. Under normal conditions, the first to third full-wave rectification circuits are not connected and only connect during the firing procedure.[3][12]

Princess Yurisha Iscandar warns that firing the Wave-motion Gun dissipates the superstring vacuum, which has the potential to phase-transition the universe.[8][11][N 2]

History[]

Early history[]

Iscandar WMG

Iscandar used wave-motion weaponry in its campaigns

The Wave-motion Gun was created thousands of years ago by Iscandarian civilization and was used during their bloody campaigns throughout the Large Magellanic Cloud. Iscandar's objective was to destroy civilizations and worlds across the cosmos in order to crystallize and catalogue their memories as wave-motion energy inside of an underground crypt known as the Sanctel, giving them an eternal, but static, life. Following the self-entombment of the Iscandarian race into the Sanctel, Queen Stasha came to resent the bloody history of its people and began to spread a new peaceful philosophy condemning the militarization of Wave-motion Energy.[13][14]

Great Garmillas War[]

Yamato, the first wave-motion gun-equipped Earthling vessel, fires its DWM EE for the first time

In 2191,[15] the Greater Garmillan Empire, which had spread from Iscandar's double planet Garmillas all the way to the Milky Way Galaxy, began an invasion of the remote planet Earth. The war had reduced the planet's surface to a barren, radioactive waste, so Stasha contacted the Earthlings and promised to gift them a device that could reverse the Earth to its lush state. However the earthlings would have to reach Iscandar to obtain the device, so the Queen sent them plans for a wave-motion engine that would allow the earthling to travel at FTL speed and reach the Large Magellanic Cloud. However the earthlings twisted the gift they had been given, and used the technology to build the first modern wave-motion gun, as well as a wave-motion shield.[16]

Baleras Palace

Baleras Tower was turned into a weapon

At the same time the Gaarmillan Weapons Development Agency developed their own version of the wave-motion gun called the Desler cannon.[17][18][19] The weapon was equipped on the empire's flagship[15] and, secretly, on Baleras Tower, the Leader's seat of power. This was an action carried out in secret by members of the imperial military with ties to the old aristocracy of the nation, they, without the consent of the Leader, decided to use the Tower to threaten Iscandar into giving them a copy of the same device they had offered Earth, in hopes that it could save their own dying planet.[20][21]

The Earth Iscandar Treaty of Amity and Garmillas-Earth Interim Agreement[]

In 2199, after the Battle of the Imperial Capital, Vice Leader Hiss of Garmillas and Admiral Okita of the United Nations signed the Earth Iscandar Treaty of Amity and Garmillas-Earth Interim Agreement, putting an end to the war. As a provision of the treaty the usage of wave-motion weaponry was officially banned.[5]

In the following years however, with the transition of the UN into the Earth Federation, the new government chose not to follow the treaty, claiming it had been signed by a mere battleship commander not invested with the power to make decisions on behalf of the Earth. The federation embarked on a plan to build a massive fleet of warships equipped with wave-motion guns, which would eventually be used in the Gatlantis Campaign.[22][23][24][25] Following the end of the conflict the Earth took on an effort to demilitarize and stopped the production of DWM EE equipped vessels.[26][27]

Future[]

According to Dezariam's history of the future, beginning in the year 2322, a policy known as Aggressive Wave-Motion Gun Diplomacy was actively promoted. However, in 2409, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Dimensional-Wave Cannons was signed. A century later, in 2529, the legitimate Garmillas Empire abrogated this treaty.[2]

In 2798, a spatial rift opened in the Sea of Torment, the site of the Battle of Saturn that had occurred nearly six centuries earlier. Unknown matter poured out of the rift, leading to a catastrophe known as the Great Loss, which affected the entire Solar System. It was determined that the rift had been caused by the extensive use of Wave-Motion Guns in the area.[2] This discovery triggered a frenzy among interstellar nations across the Milky Way Galaxy, resulting in a galaxy-wide ban on Wave-Motion Energy.[28]

Variants[]

Desler cannon[]

EpidoraUnderAttack

A Desler cannon destroys planet Epidora

Officially known as the Gesh-Dahlbam, the Desler cannon is the Garmillan variant of the Wave-motion Gun, developed under the Desler Administration by the Weapons Development Agency.[18][19] Unlike a typical Wave-motion Gun, which is usually installed inside the ship, the Desler cannon is more of a separate cannon module that can be ejected, so as to not damage the entire ship.[17][29] As such, it can be powered in various ways and not just by a wave-motion engine. Desler cannons are known to have been powered by space fortresses[18] or other smaller ships.[29] Only a selected number of ships have been equipped with the Desler cannon, such as Deusura II, Neu Deusura and Deusura III, a Desler cannon was also built inside of Baleras Tower.[20][21]

Dispersion Wave-motion Gun[]

The Dispersion Wave-motion Gun[N 3] is a variant of the Wave-motion Gun developed by the Earth Federation. It's a dual barrel version of the standard weapon that fires two shots at the same time, at designated coordinates, the two shots collide and create a dispersion pattern of dozens of smaller beams spread across a wide area of space. Through the multiple lock-on system, a ship can select multiple targets individually and hit each one with a divergent beam.[30] It can be fired both on Dispersion and on Convergance mode.[7] The weapon was first tested in the 8th Floating Continent Recapture Operation and was later used during the Battle of Saturn and the Gatlantis Campaign.[22][25]

Small wave-motion guns

Wave-motion Spray Gun[]

The Wave-motion Spray Gun,[31] also known as the Small Wave-motion Gun,[7] is a variant of the Wave-motion Gun developed by the Earth Federation in the months prior to the Gatlantean invasion of the Solar system. Rather than shooting regular Hawkings radiations, it shoots the same beam as a regular beam cannon which is coated with Wave-motion Particles. It's equipped on the UNCN Patrol Ship and Escort Ship classes[7] as well as in the Kongo Kai II refit of the Kongo-class.[32] While the beam always travels in a straight line, the energy released by the Wave-motion Spray Guns equipped on Escort and Patrol ships tends to also spread diagonally in the form of a mist, matching the unique cut shape of the ships' muzzle.[33]

Transit Wave-motion Gun[]

Transit wave-motion gun

The Transit Wave-motion Gun is fired at the Battle of Gatlantis

The Transit Wave-motion Gun is a variant of the Wave-motion Gun theorized by Lt. Commander Shiro Sanada during the Gatlantis Campaign. It utilizes a Wave-motion Engine that has been infected by the Anti Wave-motion Lattice to exponentially augment the firing power of the weapon.[25][34] The Transit Wave-motion Gun was only used once during the Golem Assault Battle. This isn't only due to the peculiar conditions needed to operate it, but also to the fact that the enormous amount of energy it produces would destroy any ship firing it, Yamato was only capable of shooting it thanks to Neu Deusura shielding it with its unique energy insulating technology.[35]

Behind the scenes[]

The debate over the Earth Federation's usage of mass-produced Wave-motion Guns seen in Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love has been compared to the discussion regarding nuclear power in Japan in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011.[36]

The Transit Wave-motion Gun was initially named "Super Wave-motion Gun" in the planning phase of 2202. Despite the name sounding similar to the Transition Wave-motion Gun seen in Yamato Resurrection, both 2202 director Nobuyoshi Habara and screenwriter Harutoshi Fukui stated the two are different concepts.[37]

Since the nature of the Wave-motion Gun equipped on the Patrol Ship had never been clarified since its first appearance in Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, Junichiro Tamamori, who was in charge of the Earth's mecha design for 2202, interpreted this as a beam cannon covered in wave-motion particles, and came up with the setting idea of the Wave-motion Spray Gun.[38]

Notes[]

  • According to Scale Aviation, Makoto Kobayashi's non-canon publication, "traces of a massive usage of Wave-motion Guns were detected by Earthling scientists. These singularities were all directed at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, were they were absorbed. It was determined that these were the remains of an ancient civilization which engaged in a massive usage of the weapon".[39] This description is also included in the Document Andromeda 2202 DX, but since that booklet isn't "meant to describe the world of the story", it's unclear whether that's to be considered canon or not.

  1. The notion of the Wave-motion Gun firing Wave-motion Energy on top of Hawkings radiation (while not confirmed on screen) is hinted at by the fact that the Wave-motion Gun's beam can trigger a Wave-motion Resonance phenomenon ("The Beam of Light Flashes! / Radiance of the Wave Motion Gun"). The article on the Andromeda class, taken from Hachette Collections Japan, also states that the DWM EE fires Wave-motion Energy. "Be Forever Yamato: REBEL 3199" Today's Science for Beginners Part 6 also states that the Wave-motion Gun releases extra dimensions on the line of fire, and explains that Wave-motion Energy is the vibration that occurs on the membranes of compacitified extra dimensions.
