Disambiguation:

Captain Vem Heidern (Vem Heidern, Vem Heidern)[6] was a Garmillas officer of the Great Garmillas Astro Fleet who served as captain of the Domelaze III, the flagship of General Admiral Erich Domel of the 6th Armored Space Division. He also served as part of the Domel Staff Corps and was one of Domel's closer subordinates and supporters, serving alongside him from the Gorni Campaign to the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster.

History[]

Vem Heidern was born between 2140 and 2141. He served during the Gorni Campaign alongside Vance Barlen under Erich Domel. During the conflict, he lost his right eye.[7] He went on to serve under Domel following the end of the campaign, becoming his staff's senior-most officer and the captain of his flagship, Domelaze III.[4][1]

In 2199, the two fought in the Battle of the Small Magellanic Cloud Outskirts against the Gatlantis Empire. He berated the young Lt. Commander Fomt Berger for his cockiness, but remarked that, after their success in the battle, Gatlantis would lay low for a while. Domel asked him if he would miss the thrill of hunting them down, which Heidern agreed to with a loud laugh.[4] When Domel took command of the Balun Military Base on April 14,[8] he reported to him that Lt. Col. Flakken had entered in a battle with the Earth battleship Yamato. He later attended a meeting with the rest of Domel's and the base's staff, where they discussed the strategy taken against Yamato.[9]

Heidern reunited with his war buddy

When Domel was accused of attempting at the life of Supreme Leader Desler, Heidern was recalled to Great Garmillas together with his superior and the rest of his staff. The general admiral was later released and given command of a new fleet to go up against Yamato once more, and Heidern followed him on his new assignment. While the two were sitting in an air car, approaching Baleras's spaceport, Domel revealed to Heidern that an Iscandarian had been found aboard the Earth ship. Baffled, Heidern recalled that Secretary of Propaganda Celestella had carried out an investigation of the Archelian ruins on Balun, and Domel told him she had used the ruins to investigate Yamato, much to his subordinate's confusion. Soon after, at the spaceport, Heidern and Domel inspected the troops they had been assigned for their upcoming mission, and Heidern quickly noticed Barlen among the soldiers. The two joked that they both didn’t think the other would still be alive after so many years. Heidern then led Domel to a special platoon of Zaltz soldiers, noticing they were compatriots of one of the General's deceased subordinates.[5][10][11] Heidern took command of Domelaze III once more for the following battle, and set the ship's course to the Rainbow Star Cluster. Although Domel believed Yamato would pass through it, the captain wondered if they were actually going to travel through such an unstable area of space. As soon as Yamato's presence was confirmed, Heidern congratulated Domel on his intuition. He later contacted Barlen as he took off aboard his Garont Heavy Bomber, once again sharing a joke with his old comrade. As the tide of the battle turned against them, he was shocked when Berger, Barlen and the other staff officers perished one after another under Yamato's fire.[5][3]

Accepting Death

When Domelaze III advanced to square off directly against the eemy battleship, it got caught in a ionic turbulance leaving Domel no other option than separating the independent command unit and attaching it to Yamato's stern to self destruct it. Seeing the battle was lost, the admiral ordered everybody to get to the escape pods, but Heidern, along with other officers remained behind and accepted death. He made one last joke, stating they will all be court martialed for refusing to abandon the ship, and calmly saluted his long-time superior.[3]

Legacy[]

Years later, the 10th battleship of the Andromeda-class was assigned to the Greater Garmillan Empire and named in his honour.[6]

Appearance[]

Vem Heidern was a somewhat short (around 170 cm or 5'6''),[12] squatted Garmillan man, who had a large neck and prominent nose. He had white short hair and long sideburns. After losing his right eye, he wore a black strapless eyepatch, kept in place by two metal clips and decorated by three smaller metal pieces.[4]

Personality[]

Heidern was a veteran soldier with a loud personality and a tendency to share jokes with his friends and comrades, despite this he was also very serious-minded when the situation called for it.[4][5] He was extremely loyal to Domel and was one of his closest subordinates and confidants.[5][3] Given his role as the senior-most officer in the Domel Staff Corps, he was considered something of a "grandfather" for Domel's younger officers. Despite sharing a deep friendship with all of them, he often butted heads with the young Lt. Commander Fomt Berger, due to his excessive cockiness and energy.[4][1]
