This article is for the United Nations as depicted in Space Battleship Yamato 2199. For the governmental body of Earth after the end of the Great Garmillas War, see Earth Federation.
The United Nations (UN) was the intergovernmental organization that served as the government of Earth and of the Earthling race by the end of the twenty-second century.
Organization[]
Seated on Earth, the United Nations served as the governing body of the Earthling race during the Great Garmillas War. They were led by the UN Secretary-General. By the year 2199, after the surviving population had retreated to undergound cities, the planet was divided into several administrative regions grouped into six continent blocs[1] and organized under the United Nations Space Agency.[4] By the end of the Garmillas War, the districts were largely physically isolated from one another. Known administrative regions were the Far-East District, led by chief administrator Heikuru Todo,[5] the USA, the EU, China,[6] and the Middle East. Known blocs were North America, Eurasia, and Africa.[1]
Military matters were handled by the United Nations Joint Forces, which also managed the underground cities' police forces.[4]
History[]
Martian Rebellion[]
The Earthling race began colonizing planet Mars in 2111, after reaching the planet in 2042. Despite the apparent state of peace, the Martian Government secretely acquired access to an alien wreck, and in the years following the initial colonization, reverse-engineered the sophisticated technology and used it to create the first Earthling space navy, the Martian Autonomous Government Space Navy.[7]
Aware of its military superiority, in 2164,[8] Mars declared its independence sparking a series of two devastating conflict that would come to be known as the Inner Planetary Wars[7]. To retaliate against the Martian forces, the UN created the United Nations Cosmo Navy, with its two first classes the Murasame-class and the Kongo-class, entering service in 2170 and 2171 respectively. In the same period, a vast network of underground cities was constructed across the entire planet in case of an emergency evacuation.
Despite being technologically superior, the Martian fleet was ultimately defeated by the the UNCN in 2183. The Martian government surrendered and all marsnoid survivors were forced to emigrate back on Earth, leaving all settlements abandoned.[9][7]
First contact[]
On April 1, 2191, the Uranus Surveillance Station detected a series of alien ships from the Great Garmillas Empire entering the solar system. The UNCN deployed the Japanese fleet, under the command of Admiral Juzo Okita, and the two forces met in orbit of Pluto.[7] The UN Space Defence Committee ordered Okita to open fire on the aliens considering them to be invaders. Despite the Admiral's reluctance, the order was executed. The Garmillas ships immediately retaliated, destroying 80% of the Earth fleet with their counterattack.[7][10]
This was the standard Garmillas tactic at the time, to put pressure onto their enemy in order to make them attack first, and only then launch an invasion once they had justification to do so[7]
War with Garmillas[]
The Garmillas forces established a base on Pluto from which they coordinated the invasion of the solar system. The UNCN reorganised itself and launched a massive counteroffensive, using the asteroid belt as an absolute defense line. This prompted the invaders to start bombarding Earth with planet bombs, the first of which fell on April 2, 2193 on Japan.[7] In 2198, after 7 years of war and 5 years of non-stop bombing, the UN unleashed all of its remaining fleet power in a decisive battle off the coast of Mars. Operation K2, also known as the Second Battle of Mars, was led by admiral Okita. The fleet that took place in the battle consisted of ships from various nations of Earth.[7]
The battle was a success for Earth, and they managed to push the invaders out of the inner solar system. The victory raised morale among the Earthlings. Despite coming at a great cost, demonstrating that winning over their adversary was not impossible.[9] The battle also elevated the reputation of Admiral Okita, to the jealous irritation of General Serizawa; the general's view of Okita would be tainted for years afterward.[11]
Project Izumo[]
For more information, see Project Izumo
Sometime before 2198 the UNCF had started working on Project Izumo, a last ditch effort to save humanity that proposed transporting a small portion of the remaining population out of the solar system, settling a habitable world, and re-starting human civilization. General Kotetsu Serizawa of the United Nations Cosmo Force was placed in command of the project and preparations moved ahead. The work was interrupted in 2198 when Earth recieved a message from a distant alien planet, Iscandar.[1][11][12]
Iscandar enters the frame[]
Sometime between 2192 and 2198, Queen Stasha Iscandar would come to know of the Garmillas bombings of Earth. She sent her sister, Princess Yurisha to Earth, in order to gift the Earth with plans for a wave motion engine, which would have made humans capable of reaching planet Iscandar, and obtain the Cosmo Reverse System, a device that could restore Earth's biosphere, ruined by Garmillas's planet bombs.[13]
Yurisha reached Earth with the plans in 2198, and established formal relations between her homeplanet and the United Nations; after her arrival she was assigned lieutenant Yuki Mori as her aide, and Project Izumo was officially scrapped in favour of the more ambitious and risky Program Yamato.[1][14]
Before the princess could reveal the full route for Iscandar however, she fell victim of a possible terrorist bombing that sent her into a coma and caused Mori to suffer from amnesia.[14][15][16]
Operation M[]
The arrival of Iscandar's second princess Sasha carrying a Wave-motion Core, a component necessary to the activation of the Wave-motion engine, was scheduled for January 17, 2199. The UN Cosmo Navy devised Operation M, in order to distract the Garmillas forces long enough for the princess to reach Mars, where a two-person team would retrieve the package. The operation was led by Okita and resulted in the near destruction of the entirity of the UNCN First Fleet.[9]
Despite the efforts of the First Fleet, Sasha's ship, Sheherazade, faced engine malfunctioningwhile entering Mars' atmosphere, leading to the death of its pilot. Thankfully the extraction team menaged to retrieve the wave motion core; and the operation was declared a success.[9]
Yamato takes off[]
In the aftermath of Operation M, Colonel Valcke Schulz, the commanding officer of the Garmillas base on Pluto, sent a Pormelia-class Astro Assault Carrier in order to attack a facility off Japan's cost. The structure was actually the space battleship which had originally been built for Project Izumo and later equipped with the Wave-motion Engine, BBY-01 Yamato. The ship, which had been camougflaged with the wreck of her ononimous 20th century counterpart, rapidly destroyed the enemy craft. Schulz decided to send an Interplanetary ballistic missile to Earth to deal with the Yamato before it bacame a threat.[1][9]
A day after the attack, Admiral Okita, who had been chosen to command the Yamato, pubblicly announced Program Yamato by showing a video message sent by Stasha, which had been recovered together with the Wave-motion Core. Before Yamato could depart, the Garmillas missile from Pluto entered the Earth's atmosphere, threatening to destroythe Earthlings' last hope.[1] In a surprising turn of event, all remaining UN blocks sent power to the Far East district and the Yamato. Suddenly able to start her engine at full power, the ship took down the planetary missle and immediately took off, turning helm toward Iscandar.[1]
In the following weeks, the Yamato would destroy the Garmillas base in the Operation M2, causing the bombings on Earth to end once and for all.[17]
Voyage to Iscandar[]
During her one year journey towards Iscandar, Yamato faced off against Garmillas' forces various times, eventually learning the planet's true nature as Iscandar's twin star.[18] Eventually the ship battled against Supreme Leader Abelt Dessler during the Battle of the Imperial Capital, apparently killing the tyrant.[19]
A day after the battle, on July 17, 2199,[7] Yamato arrived on Iscandar, and landsed in its imperial capital, Isk San Aria. After a day of stalling, Queen Stasha agreed to gift the Earth the Cosmo Reverse. She also signed a treaty with Vice Leader Redof Hiss of Garmillas, and Admiral Okita, which served as an armistice between the Earth and Garmillas, as well as banning the usage of wave-motion weaponry.[20][21] After completely recieving the CRS, the ship left the planet, setting course for the Earth, starting her 168,000 light years journey towards its homeplanet.[20]
Finally, after 300 days of traveling, Yamato arrived on Earth on December 8th, 2199, bringing the CRS with her, and restoring the ravaged planet to its original blue self.[22]
Founding of the Earth Federation[]
Eventually, sometime between the return of the Yamato at the end of 2199 and 2201,[2][N 1] the United Nations disbanded and were replaced by the Earth Federation. Their legacy however, was preserved by the United Nations Cosmo Force, the UNCN and the UNCM, which wouldn't change their name up until at least 2204.[3][23]
Notes[]
- The United Nations are mistakingly referred to as the Earth Federation in Heikuro Todo's character description for Space Battleship Yamato 2199.[24]
- The "Personnel et Equipment" section of the "Terre" booklet contained in the French box set for Space Battleship Yamato 2199 makes the same mistake.

However, since the United Nations Forces continued to use the UN logo and name after the founding of the Earth Federation it remains unclear when exactly that transition took place.
