The Type 97 Jet-propelled Space Anchor is, unlike previous rocket anchors used by the UNCN, completely external to the ship's hull. Like other similar devices, it's fired by a rocket launch mechanism. Its firing operations are controlled by the rocket anchor control room located near the launch mechanism, but it can also be operated directly from a ship's bridge.[3]

Following its first refit, Yamato's rocket anchor's base, arms, and anchor chains were greatly strengthened , to fit with the battleship's increased displacement capacity.[3]

History[]

Yamato's rocket anchor's first firing

Two type 97 Jet-propelled Space Anchors were equipped on Yamato, the model was chosen due to it being external. This allowed to avoid the technical and structural problem of not having enough storage space in the bow, since the battleship's rear was already occupied by its wave-motion gun.[3]

The rocket anchor was first used by Yamato to stop its advance when it landed on Jupiter Floating Continent. it was again used during the Encounter with the Garmillas Dimensional Submarine and when Yamato arrived at Leptapoda to hold the ship in hiding. The rocket anchor was used in the Battle of the Imperial Capital to fix the hull position for firing its Wave-motion Gun. It was used again after landing on Iscandar to hold Yamato in place. Upon reaching Shambleau, the rocket anchor activated itself to stop Yamato. During the Battle of Shambleau, the rocket anchor was used when Yamato was facing Megaruda.[1][4][5][6][7][8]

During its second journey, Yamato used both of its rocket anchors to steady itself while it was rescuing civilians in the midst of the battle of the 11th planet.[2]
