The Type-0 Space Carrier-based Fighter or Cosmo Zero is a superiority space attack fighter used by the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy which can engage space, air and ground targets. It was originally meant to be the main carrier-based fighter of the Cosmo Navy's trump card, the space battleship Yamato, during the Great Garmillas War, but due to delays in its production its role was taken by the UN Ground Force's Cosmo Falcon. The Cosmo Zero continued to serve in the Cosmo Navy after the end of the war although it was never mass produced.

Armaments and Technical Specifications[]

The Cosmo Zero is a transatmospheric carrier based fighter capable of engaging both ground and air targets. Its armed with 4 machine guns mounted on the underside of the nose and 1 autocannon. Both weapons fire a mixture of laser and particle beams.[3] The machine guns form a force field within the chamber to accelerate the beam into a bullet-shape within the barrel.[4] They appear to be able to fire up to 10 rounds.[5] It can also carry up to 12 ordnance on its various hard points, located under the wings (one for each one) and on each side of the fuselage, as well as on the triple pylons. It can be equipped with large air-to-ground missiles air-to-air missiles and anti-ship missiles. It can use the same kind of missiles equipped on the Cosmo Falcon[4][6]

Its outer wing sections are angled downward and its wing pods house vernier thrusters and RCS. The main engine features variable-geometry C-D nozzle. The sub engines appear to have limited 2D vector-thrust.[7] The Cosmo Zero is equipped with an Axial Flow Cosmo Engine,[6] the Model 52 was named after its Comet 5 Type No.2 engine, while the Model 51 was named after its Comet 5 Type No.1 engine. The engine was the only real difference between the two models, with no change in their exterior features.[8] The fighter can be equipped with two pylon high mobility units.[6][9]

The Cosmo Zero's vast array of antennas located on the nose and at the end of the wings are meant to control the stealth navigation of a Cosmo Falcon formation fullfilling the fighter's role as a commander craft. They also contain a fluid cooling system, which enables full-range navigation in the standard environment of the solar system. The houses a wide variety of equipment, including radar, sensors, armaments, protective shields, making it extremely dense.[10] As it is a carrier-based fighter, the Cosmo Zero's wings, nose and the tail are built to be foldable to ease storage inside of an hangar.[6] The wings also serve as heat sinks.[10] The craft has a navigation computer AI.[9] It has an extendable ladder for the pilot.[11] Usually, it is manned by a single pilot, but can accommodate two if needed.[5][12]

The Cosmo Zero's cockpit is a conservative and “old-fashioned" design, but it's also solid and practical. The canopy is made out of a front window fixed to the nose and a retractable canopy that also serves as a hatch. The design of the insides of the cockpit is similar to those of 20th century planes, and has become widely used for newer space and air fighters of the Earth Federation Defense Force.[10]

History[]

Cosmo Zero ground model 51

Serial number 0-5200, a model 51 Cosmo Zero undergoing repairs

The Cosmo Zero was developed jointly by the Far East District Aerospace Battlegroup, the Space Technical Arsenal and the United Nations Cosmo Navy. It was to see mass production in 2200, hence it's designation "Type-0", which was, however, only temporary. It was meant to serve as the space battleship Yamato's main fighter, becoming the first fighter built to be specifically carrier-based in the United Nations Cosmo Navy, however, due to delay in its mass production, by Yamato's departure in early 2199 only 9 prototypes had been built.[6][13] One of these fighters, an unarmed Model 51 Cosmo Zero,[8] had been built for flight testing on Earth, but it encountered an engine malfunction and, as of February 9, 2199,[14] it was on ground waiting for repairs.[13] Cadets Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima stole it to fend off a Garmillas attack, but they crashlanded due to the fighter's engine problems.[5]

Two other Cosmo Zeros, serial numbers 0-5201 and 0-5202, respectively codenamed α1 and α2,[6] were equipped on Yamato, while the Ground Force's Cosmo Falcon replaced the Zeros as the battleship's main fighter.[13] α1 was assigned to Kodai,[9] now Yamato's tactical officer,[15] while the young Ensign Akira Yamamoto stole α2 to assist during the Battle of Enceladus,[16] and was later granted command of the fighter after being transferred to the Yamato squadron. Both Zeros played a significant role in the rest of the Great Garmillas War. Together, they discovered the location of the Pluto Frontline Base during Operation M2.[9][17] Later, α2 saw significant action during the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster, when Yamamoto used it to single handedly defend Yamato from an air raid.[18] They were both used in the Battle of the Imperial Capital, during which α1 recieved heavy damage, and spent the following months undergoing repairs.[18] α2 was flown by Yamamoto during the Battle of Shambleau.[19]

Wave-motion Excavation Warhead Cosmo Zero

Following the end of the war with Garmillas, the UNCN continued to use the Cosmo Falcon, and eventually its successor, the Cosmo Tiger II, instead of mass producing the Zero,[20] however, the Autonomous Unmanned Fighter Blackbird was based on a modified version of the Type-0 Model 52 and saw significant action in the Gatlantis War.[21] The repaired α1 continued to serve aboard Yamato during the conflict with the Gatlantis Empire together with another red-nosed Cosmo Zero. The two fighters were used to carry Wave-motion Excavators during the Terezart Landing Operation,[22] α1 was later used by Kodai to lead the Yamato squadron during the Golem Assault Battle.[23]

α1 continued to serve aboard Yamato in the following years, being used by Kodai during the Dezarium War to descend on Iscandar, although it never saw direct action.[24]

Notes[]

  • Although it is mainly launched from Yamato's catapults, it can be stored in the side hangars without necesserily having its wings folded.[4]
  • While the Cosmo Zero appearing in "Messenger of Iscandar" is a Model 51, Kato mistakingly identifies it as a Type 52.[8]
    • Wierdly, the fighter is number 0-5200.[5]
