The Special Task Force Under the Commander is an Earth Federation Defense Force special space naval unit, directly under the control of General Commander-in-Chief Heikuro Todo and organized under Earth Federation Defense Command.
The unit was secretly organized as an anti-Dezariam task force as part of Operation DAD. The plan was to assemble and launch a counterattack once the Dezarians began their invasion of Earth. However, two of the vessels intended for the task force were captured by the Dezarians. As a result, the remaining two ships, the Asuka and the flagship Yamato, split up: the Asuka headed toward Earth, while the Yamato departed toward the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.
The unit's commander is Admiral Osamu Yamanami.
