A Cosmo Falcon, an Earthling spaceplane
A spaceplane, formerly designated as an aerospaceplane, is a type of small spacefaring vehicle. The designation is primarily used on Earth. The equivalent Garmillan military term is astrocraft, which does not distinguish between atmospheric and extra-atmospheric capabilities.[1]
History[]
Prior to the Garmillas War, the United Nations employed the term "aerospaceplane" to describe flight vehicles capable of operating both within a planetary atmosphere and in outer space, thereby distinguishing them from conventional aircraft. At the time, small military space vehicles were broadly categorized into two types: aerospaceplane, which were considered part of the aviation domain, and space boats, which were classified as warships.[2]
Later on, the term aerospaceplane was gradually phased out in favor of the more general term spaceplane, which was more similar to the already used term "space reconnaissance plane." However, in 2207, with the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy beginning construction of dedicated carrier vessels, the Earth Federation Cosmo Force requested to reinstate the older designation Aerospaceplane Carrier. This was intended to highlight the Cosmo Force’s origins as ab evolution of the Air Force.[3]
