Space Defense Command is a unit of the United Nations Cosmo Force tasked with the defense of the Solar system and the Earth. It was under the command of Admiral Ryu Hijikata up until his demotion in 2202.
Organization[]
Space Defense Command is organized under the United Nations Cosmo Force. It exists independently from the Cosmo Force's branches, but its personnel is seconded from them. It is tasked with the Solar system's defense, most notably the Earth's. For this reason, the Lunar and Mars Area Armies, the Outer Planetary, Inner Planetary, and Mobile Defense Fleets, and the Homeland Air Defense Corps are all organized under Space Defense Command. By 2199, it had control of all UN member states' ground and air forces. It's headed by a Commander,[5] position which was occupied by Ryu Hijikata up until his demotion in 2202.[3][6][7]

During the Great Garmillas War, Admiral Ryu Hijikata of the United Nations Cosmo Navy served as Commander of Space Defense Command. The Greater Garmillan Empire's indiscriminate bombings of Earth from 2192 to 2199 wiped out the United Nations Forces' air force and ground force branches, leaving the role of air and ground defense of the planet, as well as the aerial forces of all UN member states' Earth-based militaries, to Space Defense Command. By 2199, Space Defense Command held an absolute defense line on the Moon.[6][3][8][1]
Following the reorganization of the Earth's government[4] and the founding of the Earth Federation, Space Defense Command passed under the authority of the federation[2] and underwent a period of reorganization.[9] Following his vocal opposition of the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan, in 2202,[4] Admiral Ryu Hijikata was removed from his post of Commander and was demoted to Commander of the Outer Defense Division.[10][11]
