A brief skirmish took place outside the Large Magellanic Cloud between the forces of the Gutaba Expedition Group of Grand Chief Commissioner Goran "Thunder" Dagam and the remnants of the Zoellik faction under the command of Brigadier General Basiv Vandevel as part of Dagam's search for the World of Tranquillity.[1]
Prelude[]
Following the devastating events of the Planet Balun Breakthrough Operation, which saw the death of the traitorous Imperial Marshall Herm Zoellik and the destruction of a good portion of the Great Imperial Garmillas Astro Fleet, Major General Gremdt Goer took command of the 3000 surviving and started a journey towards Garmillas, only for the fleet to get further divided between those who supported Ditz's new Provisional Government and those who supported Supreme Leader Desler after the fall of his administration.[3]
However, a small contingent of ships who were loyal to Zoellik separated from the main fleet after leaving Balun, wandering the cosmos under the command of Brigadier General Vandevel out of fear of being executed by the Desler government due to their affiliation with the deceased Marshall.[1]
The Battle[]

Zoelgutt II was hit directly by the Flame Strike Gun
In August 2199,[2] Vandevel's forces encountered the Gutaba Expedition Group, which was on the move from the Small Magellanic Cloud to the Large Magellanic Cloud. Without any warning Governor Dagam's forces began attacking the Garmillans using a new weapon which the Gatlanteans had built using stolen Garmillan scientists kept in slavery, the Flame Strike Gun.[1]
Thanks to the extremely long range of the weapon, the Gatlanteans managed to easily wipe out the enemy fleet without taking any losses. The Gatlanteans new Flame Strike Gun was powerful enough to easily pierce through the Zoellugut II's armor allowing Dagam to easily destroy the flagship in just two shots. General Dagam would then briefly gloat over his swift victory over Vandevel's decimated fleet before resuming the Gutaba Expedition Force's mission.[1]
Aftermath[]
Having cleared its path, the Gutaba Expedition Group moved in to the Large Magellanic Cloud, where it would encounter the Earthling Space Battleship Yamato, leading to the Battle of Kappadokia and, by extension, to the Battle of Shambleau.[1]

- ↑ 2.0 2.1 Mikage Kiryu states that the events of Odyssey of the Celestial Ark (outside of the prologue and epilogue) are set one months after Yamato's take off from Iscandar, as that event is stated to take place on July 27, 2199, it can be deduced that the movie takes place in August of the same year.
