The Science Bureau,[1] also known as the Ministry of Science and Technology,[3] is an office of the Earth Federation that handles affairs in the fields of research, technology and innovation.
History[]
The Science Bureau was born together with the Earth Federation between 2199 and 2201. To investigate the residual wave-motion energy left over by an ancient civilization that had been detected at the center of the Milky Way, The Science Bureau deployed the Yamato-class ship Musashi BBY-02.[3]

When the Earth Federation announced its Wave motion gun fleet plan in 2201, Lt. Commander Shiro Sanada took up an important position within the office and began working on refurbishing the space battleship Yamato, of which he had been executive officer during the Great Garmillas War.[1] Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi, another former Yamato officer, was also working with the Science Bureau, and by 2202 she was entrusted with the analysis of top secret material.[1] In December of the same year, she was part of an entourage that was investigating a Gatlantean soldier who had been recovered during the 8th Floating Continent Recapture Operation. Unbeknownst to the scientists however, Gatlantean soldiers were created to self-destruct once captured, so the prisoner exploded during the analysis, killing most of the group studying him and gravely injuring Niimi.[2]
