- For information on the planet in the original Space Battleship Yamato, Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, and Space Battleship Yamato 2, see Saturn (OS).
Saturn was a ringed gas giant, the sixth planet in Earth's solar system. In the Garmillas language, the planet was called "Zedan".[2] Following the great damage it received during the Battle of Saturn, the remains of planet Saturn have become known as the "Sea of Torment".
History[]
The Garmillas War[]
Days after departing Earth in early 2199, the space battleship Yamato detected the distress signal of another Earth vessel originating from the vicinity of Saturn. Diverting to Saturn required a significant change from Yamato's planned course and members of the senior staff initially resisted investigating, until a serious engine failure compelled them to visit one of Saturn's moons, Enceladus, for a rare mineral that would be vital to making repairs. The Greater Garmillan Empire, maintained a reconnaissance presence near Saturn, and managed to track Yamato's movements, launching an attack. [2]
The Gatlantis Campaign[]
In May of 2203, Saturn became the site of a major battle between the United Nations Cosmo Navy fleet and the military of the Gatlantis Empire. After multiple hit and run attacks elsewhere in the solar system, Gatlantis committed a large portion of its forces to attack the UNCF ships gathering above Saturn's rings. With the tide of battle turning toward Gatlantis, a subsequent wave of UNCN ships hidden below the rings fired through them into the unsuspecting enemy ranks, and rose through the ice particles of the rings to engage at close range. The Earth fleet pressed the attack and nearly achieved victory until Gatlantis' "White Comet," the massive battle fortress at the heart of the empire, emerged from warp near the planet. In a show of power, the White Comet disintegrated Saturn and its rings by merely passing through it.[1][4] Almost a month later, after the Ark of Destruction was fully activated by Emperor Zworder, the large structure departed from Earth after discharging its shot to destroy most of the Lunar north pole, retreating to the remnants of Saturn to absorb its mass to replenish its energy for another attack, only for the Yamato to fly into its core to finally destroy it.[5]
Aftermath of the Gatlantis Campaign[]
After the battle between the Gatlantis and Earth, in 2205, Saturn is no longer a gas giant. The remains of Saturn's system is now a gaseous field that has become known as the "Sea of Torment",[6] however some moons of Saturn still remain such as Titan. The remnants of the planet's core form a magnetic field that extends until around Titan's orbit.[3] The supply carrier Asuka entered inside Saturn on Day-7 of its training mission, to carry out an exercise for its Space Cavalry with the Yamato and Hyuga. The planet was scheduled for restoration from the experimental ship Ginga, once she completed the restoration of the moon.[7]
As of 2207, Saturn's constituent materials scattered in the Sea of Torment are being rebuilt by the Saturn Restoration Fleet headed by Ginga, but it is clear that the repairs will take a long time.[6]
Future[]
According to the history of the future as narrated by Dezariam, the restoration of Saturn would not be fulfilled in the following centuries. The widespread use of Wave-motion Guns during the Battle of Saturn in 2203 resulted in the opening of a spatial rift near the Sea of Torment in 2798. Unknown matter flowed out of the rift, engulfing the solar system and causing catastrophic damage to all the planets, including Earth, in an event known as the Great Loss.[8] While the rift eventually stabilized, research indicated that another catastrophe was expected to occur around the 32nd century. [9]
After half a century of research, around the midpoint of the 31st century, Earth's successor state, Dezariam, discovered a Spacetime Node in the Sea of Torment, which linked to the galactic core of the early 23rd century. Dezariam successfully stabilized the node and aimed to use it for time travel, intending to implement the History Revision Plan. This plan aimed to create a Cosmo Reverse System to heal their dying home world while also rectifying the rupture in the past before it could manifest.[8]
