—Ryusuke Domon[4]

Ryusuke Domon (土門竜介, Domon Ryusuke) is an Earthling military officer serving in the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy. He is the son of the late Ryuzo Domon, the owner of Domon Hightech. Ryusuke developed a grudge against Susumu Kodai, the third captain of the space battleship Yamato, after the referendum on his rescue resulted in the sacrifice of Earth's time fault and the subsequent bankruptcy of his father's company and his death. To carry out his plans, Domon infiltrated the Yamato by falsifying his military record. However, as time passed, he began to understand and respect Kodai.

After the destruction of the planet Garmillas by Dezariam, Domon led a mutiny aiming to expel the delegates of the Peace Corps from the Yamato and to take the battleship on a rescue mission. Although his plans were thwarted, Kodai chose to intervene regardless.

Following the conclusion of the Iscandar Incident, Domon graduated from Space Defense Academy and was appointed as the tactics officer of the Asuka. While serving on the carrier's crew, he reached the Icarus Observatory at the onset of the Dezariam Invasion of Earth. Subsequently, he joined the Special Task Force Under the Commander and was transferred to the Yamato as its new tactics officer at the request of Admiral Osamu Yamanami.

Ryusuke Domon was born on October 10, 2186,[1] to Ryuzo Domon, the owner of Domon Hightech.[2] Domon enlisted at the National Space Defense Academy, where he became friends with fellow cadets Miyako Kyozuka, Heiji Bando, Tasuke Tokugawa, Caroline Raiden,[2][5] and Takeshi Ageha.[6] Ageha became his best friend, despite their strange bond.[7] However, the two lost contact after Ageha dropped out of the academy in 2205.[8] The group trained under Commander Seiya Kitano, an instructor at the school.[9]

In early 2203, the public and private industrial sectors of the Earth Federation began closely collaborating in preparation for the impending invasion of the Solar System by the Gatlantis Empire.[10] During this time, Domon Hightech started working at the time fault's factory as a government contractor. As a small company, they quickly became reliant on this contract.[11]

The Gatlantis Campaign concluded in June 2203[12] when the space battleship Yamato, Earth's most renowned vessel, sacrificed itself to destroy the Gatlantean mobile capital. This mission also seemingly claimed the lives of its third commanding officer, Susumu Kodai, and his fiancée, Yuki Mori.[13] Despite the apparent loss, the Yamato resurfaced in December of the same year.[12] A movement then arose to sacrifice Earth's time fault in order to send a rescue mission to a higher dimension, aiming to rescue Kodai and Mori, who were still trapped there.[14]

The potential sacrifice of the time fault severely worsened Domon Hightech's financial situation, causing significant stress for Ryuzo, which Ryusuke noticed. Ultimately, a referendum was held to decide whether to go through with the sacrifice,[14] and by a narrow margin, the proposition was approved. The morning after the voting, Ryuzo's hovercar crashed, leaving it unclear whether it was an accident or if Ryuzo intended to commit suicide. Ryusuke rushed to the scene on his motorbike and was present when his father passed away, wearing a smile on his face.[11]

Meanwhile, the Yamato returned from the higher dimension and was in Earth's orbit. Filled with rage, Domon witnessed the scene from the site of the incident.[11]

Mission to the Salezar system[]

Departing with the 65th Escort Corps[]

In 2205, the renovated Yamato was assigned to lead the newly established 65th Escort Corps, a fleet of the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy created to demonstrate Earth's new commitment to peaceful foreign relations. The fleet was scheduled to embark on a peace mission to the Salezar system, home to the planets Garmillas and Iscandar. This mission would also serve as a training journey for the cadets of the 38th Class of the Space Defense Academy, Domon's class.[2]

In order to board the Yamato and get close to Kodai, whom he blamed for his father's death, Domon falsified his background. Despite being the top student in his class,[1] he knew that the situation surrounding his father's death would have disqualified him from joining the fleet.[2]

The day before the launch, Domon witnessed a fight between his friends Bando and Tokugawa and two other cadets. The brawl was quickly subdued by Toru Hoshina, Yamato's head of security, who soon spotted Domon. After being noticed, Domon decided to leave. However, Hoshina became suspicious and began checking Domon's background, quickly discovering that he had falsified his personal log.[2]

That night, Hoshina stalked Kodai and Mori, eavesdropping on their conversation. When Kodai expressed his feelings of guilt over the great sacrifice the Earth's citizens had made for his life, Domon suddenly called out and asked him if he thought one person could bear such responsibility, before running away unnoticed.[2]

The next morning, Domon attended a ceremony with the cadets and the members of the peace delegation, where he represented his class by reciting the pledge. After saluting, he was interrupted by Kodai, who asked him to take the helm of the Yamato and ordered the fleet to depart immediately. Domon was escorted to the bridge and ignored tactical officer Tetsuya Kitano before sitting in his designated position at the helm. He believed that Kodai had given him this role to set him up for failure and find an excuse to expel him from the fleet. However, Domon reassured himself that he would not give up.[5]

Noticing Domon's tense expression, Executive Officer Daisuke Shima advised him to relax, but it did nothing to ease Domon’s anxiety. He briefly contemplated crashing the Yamato onto a nearby island instead of taking off, but after thinking back to his father he ultimately decided against it and proceeded with the launch.[5]

Reassignment to the accounting department[]

Domon was taken into custody almost immediately after takeoff. He was brought to the infirmary, where Doctor Sakezo Sado confirmed that no explosives had been implanted in him. His classmate, Nurse Kyozuka, disappointedly commented on his reckless actions, and Head of Security Hoshina made him confess his crimes and informed him that his military status would be revoked.[5]

Domon meets Hirata

Domon meets Hirata

As he was being escorted to a motor boat in the hangar, Chief Accountant Hajime Hirata approached him and asked if he knew how to cook rice, nigiri, and onigiri. Surprised, Domon replied that he did, and Hirata hired him as a quartermaster in the accounting department. He explained that, with the peace delegation on board, they needed to cook all food by hand and required as much help as possible. After changing into his new uniform, Domon was taken aback by the amount of work there was to do in the kitchens, but after a moment of hesitation, he got straight to work.[5]

In the following days, he was tasked with carrying combat rations throughout the ship during various combat exercises of the 65th. At one point, he delivered rations to Sukeji Yabu, a former crew member of the Yamato who had participated in a mutiny in 2199 and had since joined the Greater Garmillan Empire's military. Yabu had recently boarded the ship as a technical exchange officer and was analyzing a Gesh Vual enigne core, which Domon instantly recognized. Yabu was surprised by Domon's quick recognition of the device, but Domon soon snapped back to reality and rushed to continue his duties.[5]

Yabu and Garmillas's destruction[]

Days later, Domon offered to help Yabu with his malfunctioning communication device to Garmillas, after he saw him ask other crew members for help only to be ignored. He couldn't fix it however, as unbeknownst to both of them, planet Garmillas had been destroyed in an attack by an unknown enemy, Dezariam.[11]

Domon and Yabu talk on the observation deck

The two sat together on the portside observation deck of the Yamato, discussing the events of the referendum that had led to the sacrifice of the time fault. Domon expressed his belief that populism, rather than genuine conviction among the Earth's citizens, had led to that outcome. He pointed out that this was why people were now afraid of being defenseless in the event of a new war, especially given the escalating tensions between Garmillas and the Bolar Federation. He even mentioned a rumor that the Earth Defense Force might have manipulated the voting results. Yabu laughed, finding it amusing that they were discussing politics aboard the Yamato, considering their respective positions.[11]

Domon apologized for being unable to repair his communicator, then confessed that he believed his father would be happy to see him aboard the battleship. He shared the circumstances surrounding his father's death and questioned why his father would smile at the moment of his passing. To his surprise, Yabu responded that Domon would eventually find out. As a father himself, Yabu explained that he could understand why Ryuzo Domon smiled, knowing that he had his son with him at the end.[11]

Suddenly, they were interrupted by a group of crew members running through the bridge, including Shigeru Sakamoto, whe informed Domon and Yabu of planet Garmillas's destruction.[11]

Some time later, the fleet reached the subspace gate that linked the Milky Way to the Large Magellanic Cloud but was ordered to halt by headquarters. The identity of the enemy responsible for Garmillas's destruction had still not been confirmed, and Earth HQ was concerned that any intervention might lead to another interstellar war.[15]

Yabu attempted to steal a motor boat, intending to use the Gesh Vual enigne prototype to traverse the subspace gate and reach his family. However, Tasuke Tokugawa and the rest of Domon's friends tried to stop him, believing it would be too dangerous. Domon approached Yabu directly, explaining that while the stolen prototype might help him get through the subspace gate, even if he managed to reach planet Iscandar, there would still be nothing he could do.[11]

Yabu continued to move toward the motor boat, despite Tokugawa's repeated attempts to dissuade him. Frustrated, Domon told Tokugawa to stop, arguing that bad things always happened to innocent people, and that, since they were all desperate, they should just let Yabu do as he wished. This enraged Tokugawa, who punched Domon to the ground and shouted that he had infiltrated the Yamato to determine if Captain Kodai was worthy of his father's sacrifice. He said that while no one could truly be worthy of such a loss, he wouldn't have taken that risk if he had lost all hope. As their friends separated them, Domon sat up and declared that he would leave the Yamato, admitting that he never should have boarded in the first place. He then turned to Hoshina, who was hiding nearby, and told him to put him in a cell.[11]

The Rookie Crew Rebellion[]

Hoshina took Domon away in an elevator. Domon expressed his gratitude for Hoshina's decision to ignore Yabu's attempted theft. Hoshina pointed out that Domon would have had to deliver his resignation to Captain Kodai directly, even though the captain was currently in a meeting. They stopped in front of the meeting room door, where Domon overheard Kodai arguing for the 65th Escort Corps' intervention to rescue the surviving Garmillan civilians. However, his request was denied due to the risks associated with carrying out such a mission while the peace delegation was on board. Frustrated with the peace delegates, Domon decided to walk away.[11]

Domon explains his plan to his friends

Domon explains his plan to his friends

He then ran to his friends and enlisted their help in a mutiny to force the Yamato to intervene in the conflict. He explained that the ship would be obligated to provide humanitarian aid if it found itself in the middle of the battlefield. Therefore, he intended to fabricate a malfunction in the enigne as an excuse to transfer the delegation off the ship and onto the carrier Hyuga. They would then activate the enigne, propelling the Yamato through the subspace gate and forcing it to join the fight. He wanted this event to be clearly perceived as a mutiny by the young recruits against the wishes of the Earth government, allowing the Earth Federation to maintain plausible deniability. He warned them that this plan would lead to more serious repercussion then dishonorable discharges, and while they could refuse to join him, he stated that he would carry out the plan alone if necessary.[11]

Everything went according to plan until the disguised Domon, Sakamoto, and Raiden were escorting the delegates onto a motor boat. They were suddenly stopped by tactics officer Kitano and members of the security department. The group was brought to the first bridge in front of the Kodai. To Domon's surprise, the captain questioned him about why he hadn't consulted him before taking action on his own. He reminded Domon that he, too, had previously rebelled against the government.[11]

Pardoned, Domon took a seat on the bridge as the 65th Escort Corps departed through the gate, leaving the delegation behind.[11]

Battle for Iscandar[]

The 65th Escort Corps swiftly arrived at planet Iscandar, which had been relocated by the enemy, now known as Dezariam, from its original position to the Vorzon system. The fleet descended into the planet's atmosphere and engaged the enemy forces.[15] Domon, now in his usual uniform and still stationed on the bridge, was reprimanded by tactics officer Kitano for briefly losing focus. When Captain Kodai ordered the Yamato to unleash its full firepower, Domon was impressed by the battleship's destructive capabilities.[16]

As the battle intensified, radar operator Miki Saijo reported that numerous enemy ships were stationary in orbit over Iscandar's north pole. Domon observed that these vessels comprised the bulk of the enemy fleet.[16]

Domon during the strategy meeting

Domon during the strategy meeting

With the Dezarian forces withdrawing, Domon joined a strategy meeting aboard the Yamato, which included officers from the Garmillan Desler fleet. Commander Shiro Sanada of the Hyuga and technical officer Kaoru Niimi proposed that Dezariam had harnessed the energy from the destroyed planet Garmillas to move Iscandar, suggesting they might attempt to do the same by destroying the nearby dying planet Garmario.[16]

When Garmillan commander Wolf Frakken announced that they needed to carry out a rescue mission for the civilians still trapped on the surface of Iscandar, Domon affirmed that they also had to rescue Queen Stasha and her sister, Third Princess Yurisha.[16]

Kodai stated that he would use Yamato’s Wave Motion Gun to destroy the planet Garmario before the Dezarians could do it. This decision came despite Queen Stasha's opposition to the militarization of Wave Motion Energy. Domon later communicated this information to his friends. While he agreed that using the weapon of mass destruction was the most logical choice to protect the refugees—and that it would also eliminate the enemy fleet—he had hoped that Kodai would not succumb to such cold logic.[16]

During the operation, the Hyuga and Asuka, the other carriers in the 65th Escort Corps, had to leave the Yamato's side to push planet Iscandar away using a wave motion excavator, as the Dezarian fleet was using it as a shield. Left alone and defenseless, the Yamato prepared to fire its wave motion gun at Garmario. With enemy forces closing in, Domon suggested canceling the operation. However, Kodai decided to proceed. He chose to activate the ship's wave motion shield using reserve energy to protect the Yamato from the enemy, despite knowing that this would prevent the ship from escaping the shockwave after firing the gun.[16]

Domon is shocked to hear Kodai's response

Domon was shocked to hear Kodai's decision, but he responded that they needed to do this to honor Iscandar's sacrifice in allowing them to use the wave motion gun. Frustrated, Domon sat back down, muttering angrily that the Yamato was not solely Kodai's property. The Yamato proceeded with the operation, but just before it could be struck by debris from Garmario, the Asuka used Wave motion resonance to enhance the battleship's shields. Domon was taken aback when Yuki Mori, the carrier's captain, reprimanded Kodai for his recklessness, emphasizing that "[they were] all in this together."[16]

While the wave motion gun destroyed most of the Dezarian forces, an enormous invisible space fortress suddenly appeared.[16] Kodai attempted to plead with its commander, Meldarz, to retreat, but Supreme Leader Abelt Desler, the commander of the Desler fleet and former Garmillan dictator, fired the Desler cannon from his flagship at the enemy fortress. However, the shot was ineffective. After the enemy force withdrew, Desler briefly contacted the Yamato, simply stating that he had underestimated the enemy and asking to regroup. Domon was irritated by this, but Shima explained that it was Desler's way of apologizing.[17]

Afterwards, Domon was assigned the task of delivering food around the ship while it was undergoing repairs. Tokugawa inquired why Kodai had behaved so carelessly during the battle, but Domon couldn't reply. Their conversation was interrupted by Hirata, who urged Domon to hurry up. Seizing the opportunity, Domon asked Hirata what Mori's words to Kodai meant, but the chief accountant merely smiled in reply.[17]

Domon and Kitano argue during the battle

Domon was present on the first bridge during a rescue mission for refugees, carried out by four Garmillan dimensional submarines. However, the mission was interrupted when Dezariam discovered their plan and captured one of the submarines. Following this, the enemy fortress targeted the surface of planet Iscandar with a large beam weapon. Since the fortress had proven resistant to the wave motion gun, Domon suggested using Yamato's wave motion shield to protect the refugees on the surface from the impending attack. Kitano was hesitant at first, but Domon insisted they had no other choice. He turned to Kodai and reiterated Mori's words, which ultimately convinced the captain. With the assistance of the Hyuga and the Garmillan flagship Deusura III, the Yamato was able to protect the civilians on the surface. As the Dezarian fortress prepared to charge the weapon again, Queen Stasha intervened and asked for a ceasefire, which the Dezarian commander ultimately agreed to.[17]

Rescuing the royal family[]

Domon and Kyozuka talk

During the ceasefire, Stasha called Desler and Kodai to her palace. Domon and Kyozuka stood on the Yamato's portside observation deck. Kyozuka wondered if Kodai would bring the Queen back with him, to which Domon confidently replied that he would, as Kodai would never leave anyone behind. Seeing her friend's change in perspective, Kyozuka smiled.[18]

However, Stasha ultimately chose to surrender to Dezariam, offering them the planet Iscandar in exchange for allowing the Earth and Garmillan fleets to leave unharmed. She planned to self-destruct the planet, sacrificing her own life along with her sister's and their world. Kodai decided to respect her wishes. As the joint fleet departed, Desler unexpectedly turned his flagship and rammed it into the enemy fortress, urging Kodai to fire the Wave Motion Gun at him. Since the fortress's surface was only armored, this maneuver would bypass its shields and result in the destruction of both Desler and the Dezarian fortress.[18]

Kodai prepared to fire the gun, but Domon pressed the emergency button to halt the firing sequence and held the captain at gunpoint. Furious, he told Kodai that he should have taken action much earlier. To Domon's surprise, this reaction stirred something within Kodai. With his authorization, he rushed to the engine room to enlist Tokugawa and Yabu, expressing that he also couldn't comprehend what had come over the captain. He then called the rest of his friends to the hangar, and they boarded a Cosmo Seagull, setting course for the Asuka. While piloting the Seagull, Domon voiced his disbelief to Kodai. In response, the captain explained that Domon’s words reminded him of the importance of not surrendering in the face of harsh reality and of always staying true to oneself, a lesson he felt he had forgotten. They then boarded the Cosmo Hound, a prototype dimensional submarine constructed aboard the Asuka using Yabu's technology.[19]

They performed a dimensional dive and re-emerged in the basement of the palace. There, Kodai tried to persuade the Queen to leave. Domon intervened, explaining that Desler wouldn't retreat unless she did. He pointed out that humans often acted foolishly, and urged her to be foolish for once and leave her dying planet behind. Ultimately, Yurisha stepped in and convinced her sister to go.[19]

As the group departed from the planet, they were pursued through subspace by a Dezarian capture field. Domon rallied the small crew, and Kodai officially handed command of the operation to him since he had devised the plan. Domon successfully led the Cosmo Hound, reassuring Tokugawa that they would reach normal space after detaching the submarine's wings. Once they re-emerged, Kodai congratulated him with a thumbs up. The section that had been detached from the Cosmo Hound was equipped with a wave motion excavator, which was detonated after the capture field transported it inside the enemy fortress. This caused the destruction of it and the rest of Dezarium's forces when Stasha self-destructed Iscandar.[19]

The Cosmo Hound landed on Deusura III, where Domon and the others watched as Stasha reunited with Desler before vanishing in a flash of light. Yurisha explained that, as beings connected to the planet, they could not survive without Iscandar. She then disappeared as well, after entrusting Kyozuka with a capsule containing Sasha Iscandar Kodai, the unborn daughter of the Queen, who had been kept as an element.[19]

Shocked, Domon turned to Kodai and asked if he had been aware of the two royals' fate and why they had gone through with the plan. Kodai replied that by giving Desler a final moment with Stasha, they had provided him with enough motivation to continue living. Suddenly realizing that the same had been true for his father in his last moments, Domon sat down and cried, muttering that it had to be enough.[19]

The group returned to the Asuka, where Kodai handed the capsule to Mori. To the surprise of Domon and everyone else, Sasha Iscandar Kodai took on human form at that moment.[19]

Graduating the academy[]

Following the end of what became known as the Iscandar Incident, the 65th Escort Corps returned to Earth. After its return, the fleet was held responsible for the event and was disbanded, and its crews and captains were re-assigned. Domon and his classmates were shocked by the turn of events. They all returned to Space Defense Academy, and graduated the following year. Inspired by their experience in the fleet, the graduates departed to their respective assignments.[20] Now promoted to ensign, Domon became the tactics officer of the Asuka, now under the command of Tetsuya Kitano, his former instructor at the academy.[21] His former classmates Bando and Kyozuka were both assigned to the same ship as him.[4]

In October of 2207, while the Asuka stood at the Training Zone J-3, near Jupiter, Domon, Kyozuka, and Bando sat together drinking, and discussed rumors of Kodai apparently wanting to propose to Mori. They were interrupted by Captain Kitano who urged them to their posts. Kyozuka then asked Domon what he thought about Kodai, and smiling he replied that he just wished he, Mori, and their niece Sasha be happy, hoping that they could all be invited to their wedding.[4]

The Dezarian invasion[]

Operation DAD[]

For this topic in more detail, see Invasion of the Ground Reverse.

The Asuka was soon contacted by Earth Defense Force Headquarters, which informed them that Operation DAD—a secret initiative designed to defend against a possible Dezarian invasion—had been activated. The carrier reached a set of coordinates near Mars. After a brief communication from General Kotetsu Serizawa, Domon asked Captain Kitano about the operation. Kitano simply explained that it was the reason the veterans of the Iscandar Incident had been assigned to the carrier.[4]

Suddenly, other Asuka-class Supply Carriers warped in, surprising Domon. The fleet targeted an incoming Dezarian object, the Ground Reverse, but their combined Type 4 Wave Motion Shield Rounds failed to stop it, much to Domon's frustration.[4]

The Ground Reverse successfully landed near the New Capital, and the Dezariam Army began taking over the city. The Asuka received a new order to transport all members of the former 65th Escort Corps to a secret location.[4] As the situation deteriorated while the ship was in orbit around Earth, Domon opposed Kitano's decision to leave the planet, especially since Kodai and others had not yet boarded the ship. He wanted to leave the vessel and personally bring them on board. Kitano eventually allowed him to do so after Captain Saki Todo of the Yamato-class Ginga offered to cover the Asuka from incoming enemy ships. Domon took the Cosmo Hound, which was now housed on the Asuka, and sent a coded transmission to Kodai, informing him that he would meet them in the hangar of the Presidential Building. Unfortunately, Dezarian foot soldiers attacked the Cosmo Hound while the crew was boarding it, and Domon was told that they could no longer dive. Mori manually opened the roof of the hangar, allowing them to take off normally, but she was hit and remained stranded on the ground as the craft departed. Kodai managed to hold on to her momentarily but lost his grip, causing her to fall to the ground. He wanted to jump off the Cosmo Hound to help her, but Domon stopped him.[22]

To Domon and everyone else's surprise, after landing on the Asuka, they heard a song being broadcasted by the invaders.[22]

As the ship travelled toward its secret destination, Domon and Kyozuka talked. She told him that Kodai had refused to get conunseling, despite having been profoundly shaken after losing Mori. Domon reassured her he would be fine. Suddenly, Kodai walked through the corridor, and the two sat up to salute him. He thanked Domon for having come to his rescue, and Domon tried to comfort him by saying that the Cosmo Hound's jet exhaust could've cushioned Mori's fall, but he simply thanked him again before leaving.[23]

Domon was on the first bridge when Dezariam's holy leader, Skulldart, broadcasted throughout the solar system the origins of his people. They claimed to be Earthlings from the far future, who had come back in time to fix a spatial rupture near Saturn, before it could manifest and wipe out life on Earth.[23]

The Icarus Observatory[]

When the Asuka finally reached its destination, it was escorted to the Icarus Observatory by a Cosmo Tiger II fighter. To Domon and Bando's surprise, the fighter was piloted by Takeshi Ageha. Upon landing, the Asuka crew was welcomed by other former members of the 65th Escort Corps, including Admiral Osamu Yamanami and Sasha Iscandar Kodai. After the admiral left with Kodai, Ageha approached his former classmates, unimpressed with Kodai and arguing that he was mentally unstable. Angered by Ageha's remarks, Domon almost grabbed his collar, but they were interrupted by Ageha's superior, Flight Commander Akira Yamamoto, who informed them he had been assigned to the Yamato squadron.[24]

Back on the first bridge, Domon listened to Bando discuss Ageha's rudeness, when radio operator Jun Ichikawa reported a hyperspace transmission of unknown origin. Suddenly, a Golba Class space fortress, Golba Enam, appared at the Icarus Observatory. Domon was surprised to see that the fortress was only after the Yamato and was completely ignoring the Asuka. However, through its new Type 7 Wave motion resonance Cardridges, the Yamato took the Golba Enam down with one shot.[24]

Battle in the 11th Planet Space Region[]

For this topic in more detail, see Battle in the 11th Planet Space Region.

The Yamato and the Asuka departed for the Gatlantis Belt, orbiting the 11th planet, where they located the 11th Escort Corps, a small fleet that had previously encountered the Ground Reverse during its invasion. Domon was invited to a meeting aboard the Yamato, where Sanada and Niimi informed him that the crew of the 11th Escort Corps had suffered severe brain damage, resulting in a complete loss of cognitive abilities. They speculated that the Ground Reverse was actually a hyperon bomb capable of erasing human consciousness, allowing it to be replaced by the Dezarian bio-network. If this was true, the Ground Reverse on Earth meant that Dezariam had effectively taken the entire planet's population hostage.[25]

Suddenly, the Dezarian battleship Grodez warped in, prompting the crew to rush to their battle stations. Yamanami appointed Domon as the tactics officer for the battle and asked Kodai to take the captain's seat. The battleship had the ability to turn invisible, making it difficult for them to pinpoint its location. However, Domon devised a plan to use the dispersion wave motion gun from the flagship of the 11th Escort Corps, Alpheratz, to flush out the enemy. The plan worked, but the Grodez managed to escape before Yamato's Wave-motion cartridges could strike.[25]

After the battle concluded, Yamanami informed the crew that the Asuka would return to Earth with the injured members of the 11th Escort Corps, while the Yamato would head to the center of the galaxy. Their goal was to seek out the Spacetime Node that Dezariam claimed existed there, in hopes of traveling to the future—the supposed origin point of the enemy—and uncovering the truth. He also demoted Kodai for his indecisiveness and took command of the Yamato himself.[25]

Reassignment to the Yamato[]

After Kodai's demotion, Domon and his former classmates were transferred back to the Yamato, where Domon was officially appointed as the tactics officer. He went to the hangars, where the injured crew were preparing to depart for the Asuka, and asked Hirata if Kodai was truly leaving the ship. Upon receiving an affirmative answer, he rushed to speak with Kodai but was interrupted by Ageha. Ageha rudely stated that Kodai was not fit for the Yamato in his current state, which angered Domon greatly. The two began to brawl, only to be separated by Hirata and Kyozuka.[26]

After tending to his injuries, Domon returned to the bridge and then went back to the hangar just as Kodai was about to leave. Angrily, he reminded Kodai of his previous words about fighting for one's beliefs and questioned whether he was truly accepting defeat. Before Kodai could respond, Chief Engineer Susumu Yamazaki interrupted them.[26]

Later, the Yamato came under attack by the Grodez once again. The invisible battleship dropped three-legged tanks onto the Earth ship. In response, Kodai took a fighter from the Asuka to defend the Yamato, but feeling disillusioned, Domon muttered that he was too late. They soon discovered that a Dezarian, Major Alfon, had infiltrated the ship, using the tanks as a distraction. Domon realized that Dezariam was after Iscandar Kodai, one of the two fragments of Iscandar they needed to complete a Cosmo Reverse. The intruder successfully kidnapped Iscandar Kodai and Lt. Niimi, and Domon reported this information to Kodai, reminding him again that he was late.[26]

Kodai attempted to confront Alfon, but the Dezarian managed to escape. He rushed to the bridge, asking to pursue the Grodez, but Sanada informed him that it wouldn’t be possible. After Yamanami reminded Kodai that he was no longer the captain of the ship, Domon firmly stated that he would not give him the tactics officer post either, angrily insisting that Kodai had abandoned the Yamato. Yamazaki tried to defuse the situation, but ultimately realized that Domon was right.[26]

Apperance[]

Ryusuke Domon is a young Earthling man with green eyes and messy black-greenish hair, which he keeps short. He is 170 cm[27] tall and has a slightly pointy tooth in the top left of his mouth.[2]

During his service aboard the Asuka and Yamato, he wears the standard uniform of the 65th Escort Fleet's tactics department.[5] For a brief period when he served in the accounting department, he switched to the orange and black uniform of that unit. While attending the space defense academy, he wore the school's uniform.[11] During training, he dressed in a white t-shirt, military green pants, and black boots.[2]

In his civilian life, Domon wears similar pants, a white turtleneck shirt, and black shoes. He puts on a black hoodie over this outfit.[2]

Personality[]

Domon is a hot-headed[2] and sometimes impulsive[28] young man. He is highly idealistic and does not hesitate to defy authority, even engaging in open rebellion if he believes his superiors are making the wrong decisions.[15] He is willing to go out of his way to help those in need.[11]

A resourceful man of action,[3] Domon has a sharp tactical mind and often devises cunning strategies.[15][28]

Kodai and Domon have a complicated relationship

Domon's personality was initially much lighter, but according to his friends, his father's death transformed him.[5] He felt deep resentment towards Susumu Kodai, blaming him for his father's demise,[2] as well as for his indecisiveness and lack of resolve during the Iscandar Incident.[15][28] However, over the course of the conflict, Domon grew to respect Kodai.[28] Despite this growth, he clashed with Kodai again at the beginning of the Dezariam Invasion of Earth, when he lost his mental fortitude.[29]

Seiya Kitano was his mentor while training.[3] During his first journey aboard the Yamato and his reassignment to the accounting department, Hajime Hirata became a sort of mentor to him.[17] Domon also formed a relationship of mutual respect with Seiya Kitano's brother,[30] Tetsuya Kitano,[16] despite starting off on the wrong foot.[5]

Domon met his close friends at the Space Defense Academy: Heiji Bando, Tasuke Tokugawa, Caroline Raiden, and Miyako Kyozuka.[5] Takeshi Ageha, a former member of their group who dropped out of school, is ostensibly his best friend.[7] However, the two lost contact after Ageha left,[8] and their relationship remains strained even after they reconnected in 2207.[31] Domon also formed a unique friendship with Sukeji Yabu, a former mutineer who defected to the Greater Garmillan Empire in 2199. They met on the Yamato, where they bonded over their shared unease aboard the ship. Yabu listened to Domon's thoughts about his father's death, providing support during a difficult time.[11]

Behind the scenes[]

Ryusuke Domon is a counterpart to the character of the same name from the original series. He debuted earlier than his counterpart, appearing in Star Blazers 2205,[2] which is a remake of Yamato: The New Voyage.[32] In contrast, his original series counterpart first appeared in Space Battleship Yamato III.[33] The new version of Domon has been redesigned with darker hair and a younger appearance. Additionally, this updated character lacks the original's sexist and more immature traits and holds a more personal grudge against Kodai.[2]

He is voiced by Tasuku Hatanake.[2]
