Admiral Ryu Hijikata is a senior officer in the Earth Defense Force. In 2201, he serves as the commanding officer of the experimental warship Andromeda, and leads EDF forces in a successful defense against the first major wave of a Gatlantis invasion at Saturn.

Notes

• In Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, Hijikata commands another ship in the outer reaches of the solar system. After his ship is severely damaged, he takes command of Yamato. Hijikata is later killed in combat with Gatlantis forces.
• His name comes from the real-life deputy leader of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata Toshizo.
• In Star Blazers, Hijikata was renamed Captain Gideon.
