The Reconnaissance-in-force of the Yamato[5] was a brief but significant military operation in the Great Garmillas War fought on Japan, Earth. The objective of the battle was to destroy the underground building site of the Earthling battleship Yamato, which unbeknownst to the Garmillans,[6] was equipped with a Wave-motion Engine and thus capable of faster than light travel.[1][3]
Prelude[]

Sasha's death on Mars
In 2198, Earth was unexpectedly contacted by Queen Stasha Iscandar of the planet Iscandar with an offer of technology that would revert Earth to its lush, habitable state. With the help of Iscandar the United Nations managed to build an engine that would allow an earthling battleship to travel to the planet and retrieve the technology. However to activate the engine another component was needed, which was going to be gifted to Earth by the second princess of Iscandar: Sasha.[1][3][7][8]
To allow for the princess' safe passage the UNCN organised Operation M, the First Fleet was used as bait for the garmillan forces while Sasha's ship traveled to Mars where a two person team was supposed to meet her.[1]
Despite the destruction of all ships in the fleet outside of the flagship Kirishima and the death of Sasha, caused by her ship's engine failing while entering Mars's atmosphere, the device was successfully retrieved.[1]
The Attack[]
The day after[9] the Kirishima's return, a Pormelia-Class Astro Assault Carrier entered the Earth's orbit and, after carrying out a brief but devastating attack on the UNCF Lunar Base, the ship deployed a recon plane followed by two Melanca fighters to target a Cosmo Navy underground drydock that was hidden under the wreck of a World War II era Battleship, unbeknownst to the garmillans, the facility was where the space battleship that would travel towards Iscandar was currently being built, the space battleship Yamato.[1]

The Zero crashlands
As soon as the Garmillas plane were detected near Cape Bonomisaki, Susumu Kodai and Daisuke Shima, two UNCN cadets who had just returned from Operation M, stole a Cosmo Zero to engage the invading enemy, however the Zero was not armed and suffered engine failure, crash landing and failing to stop the enemy vehicle.[1]

The Pormelia attacks Yamato
Immediately after the recon plane's return the two Melancas began to bombard the facility. After deploying six other fighters the Pormelia itself attacked the drydock with its ventral laser cannon, causing heavy damage and killing many of the personnel in the facility.[3]
At that moment however the still hidden Yamato activated her turrets and shot down the carrier. Now unable to flee the Melancas became easy targets for the Air Defense Corps' Cosmo Falcons lead by lieutenant J.G. Saburo Kato. The fighters were destroyed and the Falcons returned to their base.[3]
Aftermath[]

Schulz reviews footage of Yamato
Following the attack admiral Juzo Okita attended a meeting with the remaining United Nations leaders, there, in order not to spread panic, he lied stating that the garmillans hadn't killed any of the personnel selected to serve aboard Yamato, in reality the many deaths caused by the bombing forced Program Yamato headquarters to promote various lower ranked officers to serve aboard the battleship, including Kodai and Shima.[3]
Having recieved proof of Yamato's destructive capabilities, Valcke Schulz, commander of the Garmillas Pluto Frontline Base, realized that the Earthlings had completed a secret weapon[10] and decided to launch an Interplanetary ballistic missile to destroy the ship before it launched, leading to the Second attack on Yamato.[3]
