Ginga in construction

Ginga's construction site in the time fault

Project G was a Earth Federation contingency project created during the Gatlantis Campaign. A successor to Project Izumo,[1] if the Gatlantis Empire managed to break through the federation defenses, Project G aimed for a small contingent of Earthlings to escape the homeplanet aboard the Wave-motion experiment ship Ginga.[2][3]

Overview[]

Project G was created in anticipation of the Gatlantis invasion of the Solar system. For the past few years, the Earth Federation had relied heavily on its time fault for its reconstruction effort, building up a navy capable of fighting against the entire might of the Gatlantis Empire. Despite this, the Gatlanteans seemed to have an unextinguishable military potential, and the Gatlantis Campaign rapidly turned into a war of attrition.[4][5]

Black Analyzer, Ginga's command AI

To give humankind a chance at surviving the conflict in case Gatlantis broke the Earth's lines of defense, the Yamato-class ship Ginga, initially built as an exploratory vessel, was outfitted with the latest technology in the Earth's arsenal, including a Cosmo Reverse System and a cutting-edge AI capable of giving accurate military predictions and even taking control of the ship to perform autonomous maneuvering without the crew's intervention.[5][6]

Despite the time fault allowing Earthlings access to an infinite number of warships, the human component of the military still had its limitations. If push came to shove, the Earth planned to have its soldiers receive robotic augmentations to raise weapon usage efficiency. Until artificial reproduction became a possibility, to preserve a regular genetic makeup Ginga's all-female crew would only receive minimal body modifications to be impregnated and used as breeding stock to maintain genetic purity. Ginga would then leave the solar system to search for a new home planet for the Earthlings to inhabit.[2]

History[]

TodoHeikuro

Commander Todo was the main supporter of Project G

Project G was ideated as a last resource in case the Gatlantis Campaign dragged on for too long and caused too many casualties among the Earth-Garmillas forces. It was drafted by the AI and was supported by UNF General Commander-in-Chief Heikuro Todo, who wanted to find an alternative way to keep the Earthling race alive rather than the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan.[7]

Ginga was completed and deployed to the battlefield late in the Battle of Saturn and led an attack against Gatlantis on May 11.[8][9] After the fall of the defense line held at Saturn, Ginga received the order to retreat to Jupiter and initiate the G Project as the Decisive Battle off Mars raged on. The crew members of the battleship Yamato, who had been transferred to Ginga after their ship was lost inside the Ark of Destruction, opposed the project. When Yamato was sighted trying to escape the Ark of Destruction by Captain Yamanami of Andromeda, Yamato's XO Shiro Sanada suggested using Ginga's CRS booster to help liberate the escaping ship from the Ark's gravitational forces. The command AI refused the idea, stating it would put too much stress on the CRS and threaten Project G.[2]

However, Lt. Commander Saki Todo, Ginga's Captain, was convinced by Sanada and a speech by Admiral Hijikata of Yamato. She shot the command AI, and retook command of Ginga for herself. The cruiser made its way to the battlefield and successfully rescued Yamato but, in the process, lost the CRS. With the Cosmo Reverser and the command AI out of commission, Project G was abandoned.[2]
