Program Yamato[1] was a United Nations project, born after the scrapping of Project Izumo in 2198, that aimed at restoring the Earth's biosphere which had been ruined by years of planet bombing during the Great Garmillas War. It was directed by the United Nations' Program Yamato Headquarters under Chief Executive Heikuro Todo with the collaboration of the United Nations Cosmo Force.
History[]
The War and the first contact[]
In 2198, the Earth received technical help from Queen Stasha of Iscandar. Having found out of the garmillan invasion of the planet, she had sent her sister, Yurisha Iscandar, to gift the terrans with the plans for a Wave-motion engine so that they could reach Planet Iscandar and retrieve the Cosmo Reverse System, a piece of technology capable of reverting the martyred Earth to her habitable, pre-war state. Once Yurisha contacted the United Nations, the previously established Project Izumo , which aimed at creating an evacuation vessel to send a small contingent of survivors to colonize a new world, was scrapped in favor of the more daring Program Yamato.[2][3][4]
Sometime after, the princess and her aide were involved in a car accident, possibly a terror attack against the newly established plan, after which she fell into a deep coma. As Program Yamato went on, the UN was forced to put the comatose Iscandarian in a stasis chamber and began tracing her memories to trace the route towards Iscandar.[4]
Building Yamato[]
The space battleship Yamato, previously in construction for Project Izumo, was chosen to serve as the vessel which would lead humanity to Iscandar. It had begun construction hidden underneath the wreck of a japanese WW2-era battleship of the same name, its construction had been ordered by the United Nations Cosmo Force to the Japanese company Maeda Construction Co. Ltd..[5]
On February 9, 2199,[6] the battleship's building site was targeted by a garmillan air raid, leading to the deaths of many of the crewmembers that had been selected to board the ship. However, the same day Admiral Juzo Okita, who was to be the captain of the battleship, lied to the United Nations leadership stating the attack had not killed any of the Plan's personnel and reassured them that the battleship would take off as planned.[2][7]
Yamato's journey[]
Yamato took off as planned on February 11, 2199.[8] The battleship would end up destroying the Garmillas frontline base on Pluto, liberating the Solar system, and would then continue to fight against the Greater Garmillan Empire both in the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud. Eventually, they would end up battling the empire's Supreme Leader Abelt Desler, directly in the Imperial Capital, leading to his dethronement and the signing of an armistice between the two sides.[7][9][10][11][12]
On July 17, 2199,[8] Yamato arrived on Iscandar and landed in its Imperial Capital Isk San Aria. After a day of stalling, it retrieved the Cosmo Reverse and left the planet, setting course for the Earth. Yamato's journey ended with its return on December 8, 2199.[8] The CRS was activated and the Earth's biosphere was successfully restored.[13]
Legacy[]
The Great Garmillas War officially ended in 2200,[14] following Yamato's return, with a treaty between the new Garmillas government and the leadership of the Earth.[15] Yamato's efforts in restoring its homeworld, ending the conflict, and deposing the despotic Desler would lead to her becoming a cultural icon for both Garmillans and Terrans in the years to come.[16]
The activation of the CRS led to the creation of a time fault deep underground the earth surface, which would be used by the Earth Federation to rebuild its military.[17]
