For information on the comparable celestial body in the original Space Battleship Yamato, see Pluto (OS).
Pluto is a dwarf planet in the outer reaches of the solar system, usually beyond the orbit of Neptune. It serves as the home of the Pluto Frontline Base, the main operating center of the Greater Garmillan Empire's siege of Earth during the Garmillas War. In the Garmillas language, Pluto is called Plat.[2]
Overview[]
Pluto is a world dominated by ice, with a craggy surface marked by impact craters. A thin atmosphere surrounds the dwarf planet. In 2199, due to environmental modifications made by the Garmillas Empire, oceans of liquid water exist underneath the frozen surface. The moons Charon, Nix, and Hydra orbit Pluto.[1][2][3]
History[]
At the beginning of the Great Garmillas War, the Greater Garmillan Empire began alterating Pluto's environment to more closely match their needs, and established a heavily fortified military facility equipped with a Reflective Satellite Cannon. With this device hidden inside a frozen Plutonian lake and a network of satellites in orbit, they began using nearby Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt objects as planet bombs to hurl at Earth. The Garmillas continued their siege for years, protected by Pluto's distance and their own superior technology while Earth was reduced to a wasteland.[1]
Earth forces made one of their nearest approaches to Garmillas-occupied Pluto during Operation M on January 17, 2199, when a vanguard ship closed to two hundred thousand kilometers. About a month later, the alien presence on Pluto ended soon after the launch of the space battleship Yamato, a highly advanced and heavily armed UNCN vessel. Yamato advanced directly on Pluto during Operation M2 while its fighters went around to the far side of the dwarf planet and flew low to the ground in search of the enemy base. The Garmillas brought the battleship down into one of Pluto's oceans, but Yamato used the frozen waters to hide and to draw attention until the fighters completed their mission. After the base was obliterated, the remaining Garmillas forces abandoned Pluto.[1][2][3]
Notes[]
- Real life pluto actually has five moons, however the moon Styx was discovered not discovered until July 7, 2012, while the moon Kerberos was discovered on 20 July 2011, 16 days after Makoto Kobayashi announced the production of Yamato 2199 at Anime Expo.
