- This article describes the character Basiv Vandevel as depicted in Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark. For his counterpart in the original Space Battleship Yamato, see Vandevel (OS).
Brigadier General Pasiv Vandevel was an officer in the service of the Greater Garmillan Empire's Central Army and captain of Zoellugut II, the flagship of the powerful inspector general Herm Zoellik.
History[]
Vandevel earned a measure of trust from Marshal Zoellik in his position as flagship commander. Upon receiving word of the conviction and death sentence of one of Zoellik's presumed political foes, Zoellik shared the news with Vandevel, who congratulated him enthusiastically.[1] However, Vandevel was not privy to the inspector general's plot to seize control of the empire. Vandevel stood behind Zoellik as he addressed a massive naval review at the planet Balun, but was stunned by Zoellik's announcement that Supreme Leader Abelt Desler had been killed. As Zoellik made his claim to the empty imperial throne, Desler emerged from hiding and implicated him as a traitor, and Vandevel did not interfere as another officer, General Gremdt Goer, executed Zoellik on the spot.[4]
On the long journey home across intergalactic space following a brief battle with an alien battleship, Vandevel remained in command of Zoelguut II and a number of smaller Garmillas ships formerly loyal to Zoellik. During a quiet moment, he shared his thoughts on Desler and the empire's political situation with his first officer, Meiser Drum, but was interrupted by a surprise attack from Gatlantis forces. Vandevel was helpless to fight back, and abandoned ship a moment before his super dreadnought was destroyed. As he attempted to flee, one final volley from the Gatlantis attackers killed him and his surviving subordinates.[3]
Notes[]
- In the Odyssey of the Celestial Ark novelization he's portrayed as being of noble descent, but noticibly less competent than his commoner subordinate Meiser Drum.[5]
- There has been some inconsistencies in the rendering of his first name. It's sometimes spelled Pasiv[6][7][8] and sometimes Basiv.[9][10][11][12]
