This article describes Osamu Yamanami from Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its sequels. For his counterpart in Be Forever Yamato, see Osamu Yamanami (OS).
We humans will never bend the knee to those that demand our surrender. Even if they are our own future
—Osamu Yamanami[8]
Osamu Yamanami (山南修, Yamanami Osamu) is an Earthling flag officer serving as the Supreme Commander of the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy. Late in the Garmillas War, he commanded the space battleship Kirishima, flagship of the Combined Cosmo Fleet. Over three years later, he took charge of the experimental warship Andromeda and commanded the Earth Federation Cosmo Fleet during the Gatlantis Campaign.
After the Gatlantis Campaign, Yamanami felt accountable for the military strategies employed by the Earth Federation, especially the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan. Consequently, he resigned from active combat duty and continued in his capacity as Supreme Commander.
In 2205, he participated in the Peace Corps delegation, tasked with carrying out a peace mission to the planets Garmillas and Iscandar. Additionally, he became the commander of the 65th Escort Corps, a fleet symbolizing Earth's new commitment to peaceful foreign relations.
Between 2205 and 2207, Yamanami was involved in Operation DAD, a covert plan intended to counter the impending invasion of Earth by Dezariam. He oversaw the renovations of the Yamato at the Icarus Observatory and led the Special Task Force Under the Director. In October 2207, as the Dezarian invasion commenced, he assumed command of the Yamato on a mission to uncover the truth behind the origins of the Dezarians.
History[]
Early Life and Carreer[]
Yamanami was born on April 4, 2150.[1] He enrolled at the National Space Defense Academy, where became a classmate and longtime friend of Shuntaro Yasuda and Tetsutaro Ozaki.[9] Yamanami and Yasuda served together as officers in the Second Inner Planet War.[10]
The Great Garmillas War[]

Okita and Yamanami at the start of the first contact
Yamanami eventually rose to the rank of captain, and became the commanding officer of the Kirishima, the flagship of the United Nations Cosmo Navy's Japanese Fleet flagship, under Admiral Juzo Okita. Yamanami was present aboard the ship during the First Contact with Garmillas, which led to the start of the Garmillas War.[5]
Yamanami captained the Kirishima, now the flagship of the First Fleet and the overall Combined Cosmo Fleet,[11] during Operation M. Near the end of the battle, Yamanami solemnly carried out the admiral's order for the flagship to maintain course and speed away from the enemy Garmillas fleet as the destroyer Yukikaze was sacrificed to cover Kirishima's retreat.[3]

Saluting Yamato as it leaves Earth orbit.
A little more than three weeks later, Yamanami stood on the Kirishima bridge alongside Admiral Ryu Hijikata and the ship's bridge crew to salute the new space battleship Yamato and Admiral Okita as they departed Earth orbit on their mission to save Earth.[12] Immediately afterward, he took the ship to the Moon to rescue a stranded contingent of United Nations Cosmo Marines. When the ranking marine survivor, Sergeant Hajime Saito, barged onto the bridge and loudly demanded to speak with the captain, Yamanami informed Saito with a smile that he was the captain and that Saito had mistakenly been yelling at the Commander of Space Defense Command, Admiral Hijikata. As Saito's rant continued, Yamanami subtly warned him to restrain himself.[13]
The Battle of 8th Gamirasia and the Yamato Revolt[]

Standing in command of Andromeda.
Following the end of the Garmillas War, Yamanami was given command of Andromeda, the first in the advanced Amdromeda-class of warships. He was also elevated to the post of Commander of the Earth Federation Cosmo Fleet,[12] of which the Andromeda was the flagship.[11] In his new role, he supported the Earth's reconstruction in accordance with the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan.[14]
In December of 2202, at the 8th Floating Continent Recapture Operation, he carried out orders from Earth HQ to fire Andromeda's wave-motion guns and obliterated nearly the entire Gatlantis Empire fleet that had taken over the continent, saving beleaguered Earth and Garmillas forces. He instructed the survivors to hold position while Andromeda moved to finish off the remaining hostiles. One damaged Gatlantean ship suddenly reactivated and raced away from the site of battle, and although Yamanami responded immediately and attempted to intercept, it was able to warp away.[15]
Weeks later, on December 25,[16] Yamanami was leading his fleet, made out of Andromeda, four other ships of its class, more than a dozen Dreadnought-class Vanguard Starships, and fighter craft in a fleet fire exercise in the vicinity of Jupiter when he received word that Yamato had been stolen by members of its former crew. After a number of fighter pilots abruptly broke away to join them, Yamanami had the remaining pilots who had served aboard Yamato detained and ordered other fighters to pursue the defectors. He took the Andromeda away from Jupiter to confront Yamato directly. He attempted to persuade the acting captain, Lieutenant Susumu Kodai, to stand down, and when Kodai refused, he opened fire. Yamato was able to successfully defend itself by creating an asteroid ring using pre-Garmillas War technology, prompting Yamanami to smile at the crew's ingeniousness.[4]

Yamanami, impressed by Kodai's determination
As Yamato advanced towards Andromeda, Yamanami opted not to steer away and decided to ram the battleship instead. His anger towards Kodai transformed into a grudging admiration, and with a smile, he muttered to the deceased Okita that his successor was stubborn. He chose not to pursue Yamato as it passed by Andromeda.[4]
General Commanding Director Heikuro Todo then contacted Yamanami and Kodai to inform them that the Earth Federation president had authorized Yamato's mission. In response, Yamanami allowed the detained pilots to leave and presented them with a high-relief sculpture of Admiral Okita, which hung over his desk, as a gift. When his executive officer came to his office to report the successful transfer, he asked whether Yamanami had anticipated the outcome. The captain replied that he would have used the pilots as hostages, but it turned out that it was unnecessary.[4]
The Gatlantis Campaign[]
Defeated at Saturn[]
For this topic in more detail, see Battle of Saturn (2199).
Months later, on May 8 of 2203,[17] Gatlantis mounted a massive invasion of the solar system at Saturn. After being notified of the first Gatlantean warp outs, Yamanami realized that the predictions of their most advanced AI had proven to be accurate. Once all fighters were onboard, he ordered his fleet, which had been stationed in Earth orbit, to warp to the battlefield. He listened to the president's declaration of war against Gatlantis and reflected that the protection of Earth was the very reason his fleet, equipped with wave-motion guns, had been constructed.[11]
As his fleet warped out, he reflected on the enemy commander's overconfidence in their numbers, noting that sheer power could be overcome by an even greater strength.[11] However, this was more of a question to himself than an absolute certainty.[18]
At the height of the battle, the White Comet, the Gatlantean Jupiter-sized mobile headquarters, warped out near Saturn. Yamanami ordered his forces to switch to Plan M and target their Wave-motion Guns at the fortress hidden behind the White Comet's gaseous cover, which, according to their data, should have been the size of Mars. However, the fortress turned out to be much larger than expected, dwarfing even the planet Saturn. As the uncovered White Comet pushed past Saturn, tearing it apart, Yamanami ordered all Wave-motion Guns to be fired again, but they could not pierce the Gatlantean defense field. The fortress then used its hypergravity to dismantle the Earth formation. As Yamanami commanded all ships to break away, a fleet of enemy missile battleships locked onto their position.[16]

Yamanami is distraught after his friend's sacrifice
Andromeda suffered heavy damage, and began falling toward the White Comet. Just then, the Andromeda-class carrier Apollo Norm, captained by Shuntaro Yasuda, collided with Andromeda and used its own engines to push her to safety. Yamanami was shocked when Yasuda informed him of his intention to sacrifice Apollo Norm, but he accepted the decision despite his personal feelings.[16]
Andromeda reborn and the battle off Mars[]
Andromeda was towed back to Earth. While in orbit, it encountered a squadron of automated Andromeda-class ships heading toward the Mars Defense Front. Yamanami observed them carefully and then ordered that Fleet Command be informed of the Andromeda's course, which was set for the time fault factory for emergency repairs. He muttered to himself, determined to save the Yamato, which had fallen into the White Comet.[6]

Yamanami standing alone aboard the Andromeda Kai's bridge
Once the Andromeda was repaired, it was equipped with fully automated systems as part of the Earth Federation's ongoing plan for the mass production of AI-controlled ships. Yamanami voiced his opposition to launching the battleship and other newly modified ships of its class without any human oversight. His concerns were acknowledged, and he was permitted to remain on the bridge of the Andromeda Kai in a reinforced spacesuit, designed to withstand the high-velocity maneuvers of the rebuilt ship. He was tasked with leading the new Andromeda Fleet YF-2203 in an attack against the White Comet.[19]
As he contemplated attacking and destroying the gravitational core of the White Comet, he noticed that Gatlantis was obliterating one of the worlds held within the fortress. Upon closer inspection, he realized that the Yamato was trying to escape from the planet. He immediately broadcast this information to other UNCN ships, asking for assistance and expressing his intent to attack the gravitational core to enable the Yamato to break free, even though it would amount to a suicide mission.[14]

Yamanami clutching onto the console after Andromeda's bridge is torn open
As he prepared to fire at the core, he declared that he would take responsibility for all the lives lost by sacrificing his own and his ship to save the Yamato. However, he was interrupted by a transmission from Admiral Hijikata aboard the stranded battleship, urging him to live and not throw his life away to get redemption. At that moment, a Gatlantean suicide ship breached the bridge, but Yamanami managed to hold on. He was relieved to see the Andromeda's console activate despite the damage.[14]

Yamanami salutes the Ginga
Suddenly, the Yamato-class Ginga warped out behind the Andromeda and used its Cosmo Reverse to enhance Yamanami's wave-motion gun attack, heavily damaging the gravitational core of the White Comet and allowing the Yamato to escape. Andromeda began towing the battleship away from the White Comet, but was eventually ripped apart by its own damaged and overtaxed systems. Yanamami detatched from Yamato in time as his ship began falling onto Mars's surface, and was able to abandon ship, and rode to safety clutching the cockpit canopy of a Black Bird fighter.[14]
The wounded Yamanami talks to Hijikata
Yamanami was left bedridden due to the injuries he sustained during the battle. As his hospital cot was being carried to a Cosmo Seagull to leave the Yamato, he spoke to Hijikata and admitted that he had been right to oppose the proposal for the Wave-motion Gun fleet. He expressed regret for not having foreseen the future, but the admiral responded that the real challenge for both of them, as well as for all humanity, was still ahead. Yamanami then retreated to the rear lines.[20]
War's aftermath[]

Yamanami is approached by Sanada
Soon afterwards, the Gatlantis Campaign ended with the Final Battle Over Earth in which Yamato was apparently sunk. Six months after the end of the war, Yamanami worked out of an office on Earth. He is approached by Lieutenant Commander Shiro Sanada, who suggested that Lieutenant Yuki Mori and Susumu Kodai, who were believed to have been killed in their last attack on the White Comet, were alive and trapped in a higher dimension. Although he had reservations about Sanada's argument, he was driven by the opportunity to save more lives following the tremendous death and destruction caused by the war. He also saw the possibility of halting Earth's ongoing military expansion through the time fault, which he believed everyone now recognized as undesirable.[21]
Yamanami joined Sanada, Lieutenant Commander Saki Todo of the Ginga, and Ensign Akira Yamamoto in their meeting with senior leaders of the Earth Federation and the Garmillan ambassador to Earth, Loren Burrell, to propose a plan that would rescue the two officers but collapse the time fault in the process. The proposal was turned into a referendum, and Yamanami attended the venue where the final speeches from both sides were delivered on the night of the voting.[21]
Ultimately, the proposal passed, and the two lieutenants were rescued from the higher dimension by the Yamato. Yamanami stood alongside Todo and General Kotetsu Serizawa aboard the Ginga when the battleship was welcomed back.[21]
New assignments and the Peace Corps[]
The referendum and the subsequent destruction of the time fault led the Earth Federation to abandon its military expansion, which was no longer sustainable. As a result, the Federation scaled down the size of its defense force and adopted a more peaceful foreign policy. Despite these changes, Yamanami still felt responsible for the Earth Federation's actions during the Gatlantis Campaign. When he was offered a promotion to admiral—considering his rank was unusually low for someone in his position—he declined the offer. He also stepped down from his role as commander of the Earth Defense Fleet and requested a transfer to a training unit, believing that focusing on the new generation would be the best way to respond to the loss of life in the previous conflict.[22]
The Peace Corps: Yamanami in the middle, Serizawa on his right and Burrell on his left
By 2205, he had become the Supreme Commander of the newly renamed Earth Federation Cosmo Navy, and had become responsible for all of the defense force's operations.[23] He also continued to prioritize recruit training.[24] He was also appointed as the commanding officer of the 65th Escort Corps,[24] a new formation meant to symbolise the new policy with the Yamato as its flagship.[7] Yamanami also became part of the Peace Corps, a delegation meant to carry out a diplomatic trip to Iscandar and Garmillas, which also included General Serizawa as plenipotentiary ambassador for Earth, and Ambassador Loren Burrell.[24]
The 65th takes off[]
On October 2,[25] just before the 65th fleet held a welcoming ceremony for the recruits of the Space Defense Academy's 38th Class, Yamanami attended a meeting where Toru Hoshina, the head of security for Yamato, informed Kodai that one of the cadets, Ryusuke Domon, had falsified his background to board the ship out of a grudge against Kodai. Later, during the welcoming ceremony, he was surprised when Kodai unexpectedly announced that Domon would take the helm of the Yamato, and that the fleet would take off immediately.[26]
During takeoff, a hold-up in the engine room caused the Yamato to stop. Yamanami was informed that the other ships in the fleet, Asuka and Hyuga, would change the fleet's formation and continue on without them, and was pleased to see their readiness to proceed.[26]
The Peace Corps meet with Kodai
Afterward, the Peace Corps confronted Kodai about his decision to keep Domon on board. With a knowing smile, Yamanami and Burrell observed that Kodai was still falling into his habit of taking responsibility for everything happening around him, including Domon's grudge against him. Ultimately, Domon was allowed to stay, not as a member of the tactics department but as an accountant.[26]
Later, Yamanami and Kodai discussed this in the captain's cabin after saluting the passing Ginga. Yamanami remarked that Domon's presence would not be the accountants' main concern, as the fleet was burdened by a lack of personnel and untrained staff. He told Kodai that the 65th needed to be trained before entering interstellar space, and that it wouldn't be an easy task.[26]
Garmillas's destruction[]
For this topic in more detail, see Battle against the Dezariam Hammers and Rookie Crew Rebellion.
Yamanami convened a meeting with the fleet's captains, during which he explained that in two days they would reach the subspace gate linking them to the Large Magellanic Cloud. This area was being guarded by a Garmillan patrol fleet in anticipation of a possible attack by the Bolar Federation. After a ceremony with the patrol fleet, they would be nearing the Salezar system. However, Yamanami expressed some discomfort about entering foreign territory in this manner.[27]

Yamanami and Kodai discuss Domon
He then turned to Kodai and asked him to assess the fleet's training. Following that, he surprised Kodai by inquiring about Domon. Yamanami's expression turned serious as he pressed on, requesting that Kodai sincerely explain why he had allowed Domon to remain on board, especially given the already tense atmosphere created by the presence of Yahbu Sukelji, a former mutineer who had come to serve on behalf of Garmillas.[27]

Kodai gives his speech to the Peace Corps
News reached the fleet that Garmillas had been destroyed in an attack by an unknown enemy.[27] Suspecting that the Bolar Federation might be responsible, Earth was hesitant to assist its ally for fear that it could lead to another conflict. A meeting was convened between the Peace Corps and the captains, with Yamanami in attendance. Kodai advocated for the fleet to intervene and assist the survivors of the attack, but Serizawa pointed out that the presence of the Peace Corps members onboard made the mission too risky. [23]

Yamanami smiles as he is expelled from the Yamato
In response, Domon rallied his fellow cadets to stage a mutiny aimed at expelling the Peace Corps from the Yamato, intending to force the ship to intervene. Although Kodai halted these efforts, he continued with his own plan. Yamanami, Serizawa, and Burrell were taken to a motor boat and left near the subspace gate. As he was brought to the motor boat, Yamanami smiled knowingly. After being left behind, he remarked sarcastically that being promoted in rank had made their jobs more tedious.[27]
The Dezariam Invasion[]
Stay at the Icarus Observatory[]
When the 65th Escort Corps returned to Earth, Commander Sanada shared his discovery of the wreckage of an Andromeda-class ship, which appeared to be built in the distant future, found within a space fortress belonging to Dezariam. This was the real identity of the enemy that had attacked Garmillas in an attempt to seize the planet Iscandar. At the same time, politicians, business people, and military officials from the upper echelons of the Earth Federation were contacted by Dezariam. They claimed to be a nation of Earthlings from the 32nd century, facing imminent destruction in their own time.[8]
General Commanding Director Heikuro Todo initiated a secret operation, codenamed Operation DAD, to defend against an impending invasion by the Dezarians. The 65th Escort Corps was disbanded, and its personnel were reorganized. The Yamato was concealed at a secret facility known as the Icarus Observatory, where it was scheduled for renovations. Yamanami was promoted to Admiral,[1] stationed at the base and appointed to lead a Special Task Force Under the Director, which would be assembled in the event that Earth's defenses failed.[8]
Also present at the Icarus Observatory was Sasha Iscandar Kodai, the orphaned hybrid daughter of the late Queen Stasha of Iscandar and an Earthling, Mamoru Kodai. Sasha inherited her mother's element, making her one of the two "fragments of Iscandar" that the Dezarians sought to complete a rudimentary reconstruction of a Cosmo Reverse System. The other fragment was the Yamato itself, which housed an Iscandarian Wave-Motion Core.[8]

Yamanami approaches Kodai at the Icarus Observatory
In October 2207, the invasion began, and with the help of some Dezariam sympathizers, Earth was easily overwhelmed. The ships Hyuga and Ginga, which were supposed to reach the Icarus Observatory, were captured,[1] leaving only the Asuka to arrive at its destination. Once the carrier landed, Yamanami met with several crew members and passengers, including Kodai, who expressed a desire to take off with the Yamato and return to Earth. Yamanami interrupted him, noting that Earth Federation Defense Command wanted the ship to stay hidden. He then invited Kodai to a meeting aboard the ship, where he, Sanada, and Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi explained the nature and objectives of Dezariam, as well as the truth behind Operation DAD.[8]

Yamanami sitting at the captain's chair during Yamato's take
Suddenly, they received notification of an approaching Golba Class space fortress, the Golba Enam. Commander Seiya Kitano of the Asuka intended to use his carrier to divert Dezariam's attention, but Yamanami decided to launch the Yamato immediately to demonstrate their strength to the enemy. On the bridge, he instructed Kodai to take the position of tactics officer, as Kodai had not been briefed on the Yamato's new equipment. Yamanami took command of the battleship himself, ordered the launch, and commanded the firing of the newly developed Wave-Motion Cartridge at the Golba Enam, destroying it in one shot. Under his breath, he told Dezariam to take a good look at the Yamato.[8]
Battle in the Gatlantis Belt[]
The Yamato and the Asuka made their way toward the Gatlantis Belt, an area surrounding the 11th planet where the wreckage of destroyed Gatlantean battleships had accumulated. There, Yamanami ordered Akira Yamamoto to inspect the ships of the 11th Escort Corps, a unit that had encountered Dezariam and lost all communication. He urged her to be quick, as the solar system surveillance network would soon come back online. Reports indicated that all crew members of the fleet had been left in a state of brain death. Yamanami relayed the information to Todo, who preferred that they remain in the area. However, Yamanami expressed his desire to leave quickly, concerned about a Dezarian battleship, the Grodez, which had previously destroyed a Bolar fleet.[28]

Yamanami asks Kodai's opinion on the Ground Reverse
He then attended a strategy meeting, where Sanada discussed his hypothesis that the Ground Reverse, once thought to be merely a copy of the Cosmo Reverse, was actually a hyperon bomb capable of halting brain activity entirely. This process would allow the original consciousness to be replaced by the Dezarian bio-network. Since the Ground Reverse had landed on Earth, the safety of its citizens was now at risk. Yamanami asked Captain Kodai for his opinion, but he was still in shock from losing his fiancée, Yuki Mori, on Earth and had nothing to contribute.[28]
Yamanami tried to speak up, but they were alerted to an enemy warp-out and quickly rushed to the bridge. There, he ordered Kodai to take a seat in the captain's chair and assigned Domon as the tactics officer for the battle. The enemy ship was the Grodez, which had the ability to turn invisible. Thanks to Domon's strategy, they were able to locate it by using the Wave Motion Guns of the 11th Escort Corps's flagship; however, the Grodez managed to escape before sustaining any fatal damage.[28]

Yamanami speaks to the fleet
After the battle, Yamanami addressed the fleet, congratulating them on their success and informing them that they would head to the center of the galaxy. This location housed the Spacetime Node that connected Dezariam's time to their own, and they would attempt to uncover the truth about their origins. He then turned to Kodai, dismissed him from his position as captain due to his unstable mental state, assumed command of the Yamato himself, and appointed Kodai as the tactics officer of the Asuka.[28]
Leaving the solar system[]
With half of its unit captured, Yamanami made the decision to send off the Yamato alone, and ordered the Asuka to go back to Earth in order to support a resistance to Dezariam on the planet.[1]

Yamanami and Kodai talk about his demotion
Kodai later met with Yamanami in the captain's cabin. He acknowledged that he had not been focused during the battle but assured Yamanami that he was feeling better now and had attended the lectures on the battleship's new equipment. He requested to be allowed to stay aboard the Yamato. However, Yamanami pointed out that he had not volunteered to become captain after the lectures, nor had he mentioned anything about the Yamato's course. He noted that his past self would have made a decision by then. Yamanami added that both Okita and his successor would have agreed with his chosen route. He expressed concern that Kodai's heart was still fixed on Earth and that he couldn't entrust the Yamato to him in that state. He advised Kodai to return to Earth so that his mind and body could be in alignment.[29]
Kitano also met with Yamanami and requested to be appointed as the tactics officer for the Yamato, while Kodai could take command of the Asuka. Yamanami acknowledged that he had considered this arrangement, but since the conflict they were facing would determine the future of the Earthling race, he believed it was important to include younger individuals in his crew, like Domon. He felt that the future should be shaped by the younger generation, not by older men.[29]
Suddenly, the Yamato was once again caught off guard by the Grodez, which dropped multiple multi-legged tanks onto the ship. Yamanami had a sudden intuition and ordered the department heads to check all airlocks. It turned out that one had been sabotaged, allowing an intruder, the Dezarian Major Alfon, to board the Yamato. Kodai quickly returned to the ship and confronted Alfon, but the intruder managed to kidnap Iscandar Kodai and Niimi before making his escape. Kodai then rushed to the bridge and asked the crew to track down the Grodez to rescue the two captives. However, Yamanami coldly reminded him that he was no longer the captain of the Yamato.[29]
Appearance[]

Yamanami is an Earthling man with long brown hair
Yamanami is an Earthling man with an angular face, shoulder-length wavy brown hair, sideburns, and a goatee. His eyes are brown and narrow, and his skin is light. He has an angular face, with prominent cheekbones and a pointy nose, along with slight wrinkles around his eyes and mouth.[3]
He wears a Cosmo Navy captain's uniform. The collar of his uniform is green in 2191[5] and 2199,[3] but it is blue during all other years.[15]
Personality[]

Yamanami could be laid-back and understanding, but also stern and demanding
Yamanami presents himself as an optimist with a carefree demeanor;[2] however, he has a realistic view of the world and approaches the future with cold objectivity.[18] This perspective led him to support the Wave-Motion Gun fleet plan and Earth's militarism between 2202 and 2203,[14] despite his reservations.[11][18] Eventually, when confronted with the harsh realities of militarism brought about by the time fault, he changed his stance[14] and stood with the Yamato crew during their campaign to sacrifice the time fault.[21]
As a battle commander, Yamanami is capable,[2] stern, and pragmatic in his tactics[4][8] and interactions with his subordinates. He insists that military personnel respect authority, yet he shows a measure of respect for those who choose to violate protocol and orders for principled reasons.[13][4][23] Additionally, he possesses a softer, understanding, and more laid-back side he shows when not under pressure.[26][29] He highly values the contributions of younger individuals, believing they should lead the way in shaping the future.[29]

Yamanami with Okita, Yasuda, Ozaki, and Hijikata (from left to right)
He had earned the trust of Admiral Juzo Okita,[2] and had a respectful relationship with Admiral Ryu Hijikata.[20] He cultivated a friendship with Shuntaro Yasuda and Tetsutaro Ozaki since their time spent together in military school.[10][9]

Behind the scenes[]
Osamu Yamanami appears in the first episode of Space Battleship Yamato 2199, notably earlier than his original series counterpart, who was simply named Yamanami and only appeared in Be Forever Yamato. His appearance has changed significantly since Be Forever Yamato: he now has lighter skin, longer brown hair (as opposed to grey), and a beard. His facial structure is less square, and he has a more slender build. While his personality has become lighter, he still retains the serious side from his original portrayal.[3][13][30]
Initially, the role of captain of the Andromeda in Space Battleship Yamato 2202 was intended for a new character. However, screenwriter Hideki Oka suggested using Yamanami, an existing character, which allowed for more appearances and forshadow his eventual captainship of the Yamato.[31]
Yamanami was redesigned by Nobutero Yuki.[32] He is voiced by Masashi Ebara.[3]
