Michio Murakawa (むらかわみちお, Murakawa Michio) is a Japanese manga artist. A long-time Space Battleship Yamato fan, Murakawa has been involved with the remake series since Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199. He is both the writer and artist for the manga adaptation of Star Blazers 2199.
He currently resides in Tokyo in Arakawa ward.[1] He studied the Omotesenke tea ceremony and his Buddhist name is "Sōteki."[2]
Biography[]
Michio Murakawa was born in Tokyo[3] on September 26, 1964,[4] and grew up in Saitama Prefecture. He graduated from Saitama Municipal Urawa Junior and Senior High School before attending university,[5] where he earned a degree in law.[6] While attending university, he began drawing comics as a hobby and sold them at Comiket. He was greatly influenced by Leiji Matsumoto, Kazuo Komatsubara, and the shōjo manga artist Hideko Tachikake.[7] After graduating, he continued to draw manga while also working as an editor at an advertising agency. Eventually, he assumed the role of representative director at his late father's electrical equipment manufacturing company, although he later left that position.[2]
Involvement in Space Battleship Yamato[]
Murakawa watched the original Space Battleship Yamato when it first aired at the age of ten. In 2006 and 2009, he published two Yamato doujinshi. During that time, Space Battleship Yamato PlayStation games were being released, and he discussed his doujinshi with the games' publisher. Much to Murakawa's frustration, the publisher wanted him to transform his doujinshi into a tie-in manga, but he chose to publish them independently to maintain more creative freedom.[8]
In 2011, he was approached by his friend Yutaka Izubuchi, the general director of Space Battleship Yamato 2199, to work on the series. He contributed key animation for the third episode and served as layout supervisor.[9] He also created the ending illustration for the compilation film Space Battleship Yamato 2199: A Voyage to Remember.[10]
Yutaka Izubuchi recommended Murakawa to an editor at Newtype Ace for the manga adaptation of 2199. One of the editors had already collaborated with Izubuchi and invited him in for a presentation, which ultimately led to Murakawa securing the role.[8]
As the manga's artist, Murakawa provided illustrations for various official projects, including commemorative tickets, Blu-ray bonuses, and CD booklets. He was responsible for the monitor settings for Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love and created illustrations and cover art for the series' novelization. Additionally, as part of the series' staff, he contributed to a special issue of the magazine OUT Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love, published by KADOKAWA in 2019.
Since 2018, Murakawa has been involved with special radio programs focused on the music of the Space Battleship Yamato series, produced by the Asaka-based community radio station Nanako Lively FM. He has also made appearances on these programs. To date, the following broadcasts have occurred: Radio Suite Space Battleship Yamato (2018), Radio Suite Arrivederci YAMATO (2019), Radio Suite Space Battleship Yamato: The New Voyage Extra Edition (2020), Radio Suite BE FOREVER YAMATO (2022), Radio Suite Space Battleship Yamato III (2023), and Radio Suite Space Battleship Yamato 1974 (2024).[11] In 2022, he planned, composed, and edited the music special Yamato: The New Voyage Symphonic Suite 1979 for the program "DJ. Ringo's Two-Dimensional Music Hall" on Hello Happy Koshigaya FM 868, a community radio station in Koshigaya.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Space Battleship Yamato, Murakawa was tasked with creating an artbook titled Yamato Iconics, which is set to be published in March 2025.
