The Martian Autonomous Government, also simply called the Martian government, was the planet-state ruling over the Marsnoid settlers of planet Mars during the Inner Planetary Wars, between 2164 and 2183.
History[]
The crashlanded alien warship
In 2111,[3] a large-scale colonisation mission was sent out toward planet Mars, turning the red planet into the first Earthling space colony.[1] The Earth country of Russia was at the center of this push.[4]
The Martian Space Fleet
Despite the apparent state of peace, the Martian government secretely acquired access to a Bolar Federation wreck that had crashlanded on Mars, and reverse-engineered the sophisticated technology and used it to create the first Earthling space navy, the Martian Autonomous Government Space Navy. All evidence of this was wiped from the records, meaning it became impossible to prove with certainty, but the wreck was later found on the Martian surface giving credibility to the rumors of the Marsnoids using alien technology to develop their own. Aware of its military superiority, in 2164 Mars declared its independence.[1]
A battle between the UNCN and the Martian navy in 2180
The Martian struggle for complete autonomy would spark a series of two devastating conflict that would come to be known as the Inner Planetary War. To retaliate against the Martian navy, the United Nations created the United Nations Cosmo Navy, with its two first ship classes the Murasame-class and the Kongo-class entering service in 2170 and 2171 respectively. In the same period, a vast network of underground cities was constructed across the entirety of planet Earth in case of an emergency evacuation.[1] The first war ended sometime after 2171, only for the Second Inner Planetary War to start in 2180. The conflict would last for another 3 years, ending only in 2183.[1] After the war, all Marsnoid survivors were forced to emigrate back on Earth, leaving all settlements abandoned.[3][5]
Legacy[]
With the end of their independence and much of what they had built on Mars lying in ruins, the surviving Marsoids became refugees, and were evacuated and resettled on Earth. Refugees who had been born on Mars, like siblings Akira and Akio Yamamoto, integrated into Earth society but their origins would always be made known to others by distinctive red eyes created in the Martian environment.[2] Humanity did not pursue colonization again as of 2203, despite the fact that the terraformed environment persisted to some extent.[5][6]
Technologies and strategies developed for the Second Inner Planet War would become a part of Earth's response in the more tragic wars that followed. The United Nations Cosmo Navy would go on to use its fleet of space battleships and its basic understanding of space combat to keep the Greater Garmillan Empire from approaching and conquering Earth during the Garmillas War in the 2190s.[5][7] The underground cities initially built to protect against attacks from Mars were reactivated and expanded, and became humanity's last holdout as the empire threatened the survival of the species.[5][8]
Behind the scenes[]
The unofficial publication "Cosmo One: Dragon of the Red Planet", written by Star Blazers 2202 deputy-director Makoto Kobayashi, gives additional detail about Martian history, however it goes into contrast with both Akira Yamamoto's statements in the series and the official timeline for Star Blazers Chronicle 2202.
The same article states that Hijikata and Yamamoto rescued the Cosmo Tiger 1 in 2200.
