The Lunar Squadron[3] also referred to as the Moonbase Squadron,[4] is an Earth Federation fighter unit based on the Moon.
Organization[]
The Lunar Squadron is headquartered on the UNCF's Moonbase[5] and is under the control of Space Defense Command's Lunar Area Army.[2] It's formed by various units, such as the Yamamoto Squadron. The Lunar Squadron was responsible for the training of rookie pilots, with certain members of the unit such as Lieutenant J.G. Saburo Kato and Ensign Akira Yamamoto serving as instructors.[1]

The Yamamoto squadron defects
The Lunar Squadron was founded following the end of the Great Garmillas War. The former members of the Yamato squadron were assigned to the Lunar Squadron after the end of their journey to Iscandar and the former commander of the squadron, the UN's top ace Saburo Kato, became an instructor for the new rookie pilots of the unit. However, Kato's son Tsubasa suffered from planet bomb syndrome since his birth, leading to his father often being absent from his post to tend to him. In Kato's absence, Ensign Akira Yamamoto took his place as instructor.[1]
In late December 2202, Kato was called in by the Earth Federation's Security Bureau due to the Yamato initiating a revolt and the federation suspecting he could defect to join them. The Yamamoto squadron, which at the time was carrying out an excercise together with the rest of the Lunar Squadron and the Yamanami fleet in the vicinity of Jupiter, went AWOL and joined up with the battleship. Later, after Yamato was pardoned by the Earth Federation President, Kato and all of the battleship's former pilots within the Lunar Squadron were reassigned to it.[6]
