Emperor Lugal, supreme ruler of the Denguil Empire.
Emperor Lugal (ルガール Rugāru), often referred to simply as Lugal, was the supreme ruler of the Denguil Empire and the main antagonist of the 1983 film Final Yamato. He was voiced by actor Taro Ishida.
Personality[]
As the autocratic leader of the Denguil Empire, Lugal displayed no redeeming qualities. He believed only the strong deserved to survive, showing indifference when told of the deaths of his wife and younger son. Rejecting the concept of compassion or charity, he resolved to claim Earth as a new home for his people by using the wandering planet Aquarius to flood it.
Lugal was ruthless even toward his own family: he executed his elder son for failing to destroy the Yamato and inadvertently killed his younger son during a confrontation, showing no remorse. He treated his followers as expendable, ultimately destroying the space city Uruk once it had fulfilled its purpose. His unyielding cruelty and complete disregard for life set him apart from antagonists such as Dessler, who possessed sympathetic qualities and later became an ally of Earth.
Biography - History[]
Escape from Denguil[]
When Aquarius passed near Denguil and caused a global flood, Lugal abandoned the majority of his people to die. He and his followers escaped aboard the massive city-ship Uruk, leaving behind the rest of their race. The Yamato attempted to rescue survivors but only managed to save Lugal’s youngest son. (Final Yamato)
Invasion of Earth[]
Determined to secure Earth as the Denguils' new homeworld, Lugal ordered Aquarius to be redirected toward Earth. When the Yamato crash-landed on Uruk, he personally led his forces into battle astride a mechanical horse, cutting down defenders in his path. Although the humans temporarily halted Aquarius's warp by destroying Uruk’s main control tower, Lugal activated a backup system and continued his plan. (Final Yamato)
Final Battle and Death[]
Lugal’s fleet later surrounded the Yamato, which was burdened with volatile tritiated water that prevented it from fighting back. Just before Lugal gave the order to fire, his forces were ambushed by the fleet of Emperor Dessler, who had come to aid humanity. Dessler’s forces decimated the Denguil armada, engaging Lugal’s flagship, the Prey Noah.
In his final moments, Lugal raged against his enemy, but the Prey Noah was destroyed by the Dessler Cannon, killing him instantly. With his death, the Denguil Empire was rendered extinct. (Final Yamato)
Notes[]
- The word Lugal (𒈗) is Sumerian for "king."
- The character Rugal Bernstein from The King of Fighters was named after him.
- Lugal is often depicted riding a mechanical horse into battle.
- Unlike many villains in the saga, Lugal and the Denguil are explicitly human, having diverged from Earth only 10,000 years earlier. His refusal to acknowledge this kinship further emphasizes his cruelty.
