The Large Magellanic Cloud, also referred to simply as the Megallanic Cloud,[N 1] is a spiral, irregular satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. It orbits at a distance of 41 kiloparsecs, or 133,600 light years, from the outer edge of the Milky Way Galaxy.[1][2] A Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Object (MACHO) is situated in the gaseous halo of the Cloud.[2]

From the Milky Way to the Large Magellanic Cloud.
In the ancient past, worlds inside the Large Magellanic Cloud, including Garmillas, were seeded by the Archelias people with genetic material that would give rise to multiple humanoid races.[3] The Archelias also constructed at least one subspace gate near the edge of the Cloud, allowing for transit across intergalactic distances to the rogue planet Balun, the Milky Way, and the Small Magellanic Cloud.[4][5][6]
The Cloud more recently came under the violent rule of an empire originating on the planet Iscandar, located inside the Cloud.[7] Long after Iscandar withdrew from its conquered territories, the Greater Garmillan Empire arose, and in the year 2199, it exercises unchallenged control over the entire Cloud.[4]
