Kappadokia[2] is a free-floating planet on the outer margins of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Its barren and rocky structure is marked by an expansive network of caverns that covers much of the surface, creating a labyrinth that extends deep inside Kappadokia. The interior is inhabited by Medulas, large jellyfish-like creatures that feed on energy.[1]

The space battleship Yamato fled to Kappadokia when it was ambushed by the Gatlantean Gutaba Expedition Group in August 2199[3], and tried to evade the attackers by flying through the planet's caverns.[1]
As the pursuit contued s underground, a swarm of Medulas were drawn to the vessels and began draining them of power. Yamato escaped by warping away while still in the caverns. The explosive energy of the warp blew away a large section of Kappadokia's outer crust causing the formation of a ring around the planet.[1]
