Like many other countries of Earth Japan fought in World War II. During the war, the country deployed the original battleship Yamato, first of her class, the most powerful to ever fight in the conflict which was sunk, however, before the end of the war.[3][4]

By the end of the 22nd century, Japan had become the UNCN main contributor thanks to its military spaceport near Mount Fuji[5][1]. The UNCN Japanese Fleet was the first Earthling unit to encounter the alien Garmillas during the First Contact with Garmillas in April 2191 which would come to spark the Great Garmillas War. On April 2, 2193, Japan became the first target of the Garmillas planet bombs. Eventually during the war Japan became a district[6] under the jurisdiction of the United Nations' Far-East District[7][2][3].

In February 2199 the UNCN space battleship Yamato launched on a mission towards Iscandar to retrieve the Cosmo Reverse System to cure the Earth's ruined biosphere, the battleship was named in honor of the Japanese warship of old, the wreckage of which helped hiding the space battleship's worksite[2].
