This article describes a ship class appearing in Space Battleship Yamato 2199. For its counterpart in the original series, see M-2188 Type 1 Yukikaze-class Space Assault Destroyer. For its 2010 live-action film counterpart, see Yukikaze-class Space Assault Destroyer (2010).
The Isokaze-class Space Assault Destroyer, also referred to as the Space Destroyer Isokaze Type,[5] is a class of escort vessel in the United Nations Cosmo Navy. The smallest class of warships in the Cosmo Navy at the time of its launch, the Isokaze-class served through the entirity of the Great Garmillas War, and was updated into the Isokaze Kai-class Space Assault Destroyer following the end of the conflict. Even in the early 23rd century, ships of the class are still occasionally seen.
Armaments and Technical Specifications[]
Originally the Isokaze-class space destroyers were armed with 2 prow mounted cannons and 3 forward facing torpedo tubes and 2 triple mount high pressure beam cannons, their weaponry however was rather uneffective against the garmillas forces. In early 2199 the Yukikaze was equipped with special torpedos with experimental double warheads which proved very effective against the smaller Garmilan vessels.[1][6]
In 2201, after the end of the Garmillas War, the class was refitted and outfitted with newer technology including 2 triple mount shock cannon turrets and a new type of wave-motion engine, based on Yamato's, which allowed it to fight on even ground with more advanced spacecrafts.[2][7][8]

Early service[]
The Isokaze-class was launched between 2171 and 2191, the class was in use in the Japanese fleet by the time of the Garmillas-Earth first contact.[9]
By January 2199 only twelve Isokaze-class destroyer remained from the Garmillas War, all of them were deployed in Operation M, a plan to distract a Garmillan fleet from spotting an Iscandarian space craft entering the solar system with a vital technological gift for Earth. Despite the loss of all Isozake ships and nearly the rest of the UNCN First Fleet, the mission was a success.[6]
2201 and onwards[]

Following the Garmillas War after the success of the Yamato's journey to Iscandar, the advanced technology used in the creation of the Yamato was finally perfected for mass production. In 2201 the class was revamped with new wave-motion energy technology, this new line of Isokaze vessels was dubbed Isokaze Kai-Space Assault Destroyer.[2][7] The Isokaze Kai's data was provided to the various national governments of Earth, and it began mass production. The class was supposed to be in service until the new ships based on the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan were launched. In the meantime, it was responsible for the defense of Earth along with the Kongo Kai space battleship and Murasame Kai space cruiser. Despite maintaining its designation of "Assault Destroyer", the class was essentially treated as a corvette due to its small size.[3] During this time, the Isokaze-class also served as a VIP escort, one such destroyer served as Hijikata's own ship after getting demoted.[10] As of 2202, individual Isokaze Kais did not recieve a name, but rather were referred to by the ship’s number composed of the initials "TB" (Torpedo Boat), followed by a three digits number.[3]
Ten destroyers participated in the 8th Floating Continent Recapture Operation. In the Gatlantis Campaign that followed, the class remained on the sidelines, unlike other contemporary classes like the Kongo-class and the Murasame-class which were actively deployed in combat or for medical rescue.[2][7][11]

Trivia[]
- The Yukikaze (DDS-177) was the only known Isokaze-Class Destroyer equipped with experimental torpedoes capable of destroying garmillan vessels in one shot.
- These torpedoes would later be implemented on Yamato.
