The First and Second Inner Planetary Wars, also collectively referred to as the Martian rebellion,[3] were two conflicts waged from 2164 to 2183[3][1] between the United Nations and Earthling settlers of the planet Mars seeking independence from Earth control.
Prelude[]
Following their first landing on the red planet in 2042, the Earthling race began colonizing planet Mars in 2111. Settlements such as Arcadia City began construction, and the planet underwent a terraforming process. A sense of national identity sprouted among the Marsnoid colonists, and when they located the wreck of a crashlanded alien warship, they studied its technology to secretly develop weapons beyond anything possessed by Earth. In 2164, ready to defend themselves against retaliation, the Martian Autonomous Government declared independence.[3][1][5]
The Wars[]
The United Nations were unable to oppose the technologically superior Mars, but eventually the UNCN menaged to launch its first class of space warship against the Martian Autonomous Government Space Navy, the Murasame-class Space Cruiser in 2170, followed quickly by the Kongo-class Space Battleship in 2171. This allowed the UN and the Marsnoids to fight on even ground. At the same time, the nations of Earth constructed a series of complex underground habitats to shelter their populations from counteroffensive attacks.[3][1][6] The first war ended sometime after 2171, but only for the Second Inner Planetary War to start in 2180 and last up until 2183. In 2180, the two forces engaged in battle at the Mars Offshore Front.[3] By the end of the war Arcadia Port, a major settlement on Mars, was completely destroyed.[4]
Legacy[]
With the end of their independence and with much of what they had built on Mars lying in ruins, the surviving Marsoids became refugees, and were evacuated and resettled by the United Nations. Refugees who had been born on Mars, like siblings Akira and Akio Yamamoto, integrated into Earth society but their origins would always be made known to others by distinctive red eyes created in the Martian environment.[7] Humanity did not pursue colonization again as of 2203, despite the fact that the terraformed environment persisted to some extent.[4][8]
Technologies and strategies developed for the Second Inner Planet War would become a part of Earth's response in the more ominous wars that followed, making some come to consider the Inner Planetary Wars a rehearsal for the coming conflicts.[3] The United Nations Cosmo Navy would go on to use its fleet of space battleships and its basic understanding of space combat to keep the Greater Garmillan Empire from approaching and conquering Earth during the Great Garmillas War in the 2190s.[4][2] The underground cities initially built to protect against attacks from Mars were reactivated and expanded, and became humanity's last holdout as the empire threatened the survival of the species.[4][9].
Notes[]
- Makoto Kobayashi's article "Cosmo One: Dragon of the Red Planet" gives various dates and information for the conflict, however the article goes into contrast with both Akira Yamamoto's statements in the series and the official timeline for Era of Yamato.
- The English subtitles for The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202 erroneously translate their name as "Interplanetary Wars".
