The Imperial Garmillas Defense Force is the military branch of the Greater Garmillan Empire and one of the most powerful military forces in the known universe. Following the founding of the empire in 2188 up until the fall of the Desler administration, the Imperial Garmillas Defense Force led a series of expansionary campaigns in accordance with the Desler Doctrine, unifying the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds and expanding into the Milky Way. Despite its incredible size, the growing territory it had to control led the Imperial Force's resources to be stretched thin, weakening it and giving power to the Imperial Guard, a paramilitary organization that threatened to take the place of the regular armed forces.
Organization[]
The Imperial Garmillas Defense Force[4] is the military arm of the Greater Garmillan Empire. It's headquartered at Imperial Headquarters. There, are seated the two highest bodies of the Defense Force: the Imperial Supreme Guidance Council and the Imperial Defense Force High Command, which is charged with commanding and overseeing the entirety of the armed forces. During the Desler administration, Abelt Desler served as both Eternal Supreme Leader and High Commander[5] of Imperial High Command, effectively giving him direct control over the military complex.[2][6]
The Defense Force operates two main branches: the Central Army and the Astro Fleet; alongside them stand Defense Force Operation Command, and the Imperial Defense Force General Staff. The latter is headed by the Chief of Staff and their deputy, and has command over all Area Armies and the Police Fleets, such as the 8th Security Fleet. Operation Command is tasked with defining the Imperial Defense Force's operational plan. During the Desler administration, the positions of Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff were filled by Col. General Nerun Keeling and Lt. General Ghader Talan. The High Command also has direct command over the Balun Military Base, Alien Volunteer Corps and the Central Intelligence Department, although the latter was under the control of the Ministry of Propaganda and Information during Desler's rule.[1][2][7][8][9][10][11][12] Following Desler's fall it was replaced by the Garmillas Security Intelligence Agency, under the control of the Department of Internal Affairs.[13]
Outside of the general staff and the commanders of the two branches, another critical role within the military hierarchy is the Head of Operations charged with directing all military operations following the operational plan. During the Desler administration, this position was occupied by General Dahl Histenberger. The Imperial Defense Force works in collaboration with the Department of Defense, and the Weapons Development Agency, which supplies it with weaponry. Under Desler, they were both headed by Welte Talan as Minister of Armaments and Secretary of Defense.[1][9][14]
History[]
The militarism of Garmillas[]
The military history of Garmillas dates back thousands of years before the founding of the Greater Garmillan Empire. The Garmillan species had been enslaved and brought to the Salezar system by Iscandarian civilization so that they could fight their bloody campaigns throughout the Large Magellanic Cloud in their stead. While Iscandar's militancy would fade with time, thanks primarily to Queen Stasha Iscandar's attempts at creating a new, more equal relationship between the Garmillas and the Iscandarians, their former slaves' remained heavily militaristic and, by the time of Planet Garmillas' unification into the Garmillas Grand Duchy the second half of the 22nd century, the Garmillas had already established colonies through the annexation of other worlds and species into their growing empire.[15][16]
Abelt Desler and his doctrine[]
The Imperial Garmillas Defense Force proper was founded with the transition of the Grand Duchy into the Greater Garmillan Empire at the hands of Eternal Supreme Leader Abelt Desler in 2188. Following the principles of the Desler Doctrine, the Imperial Defense Force waged a series of expansionary campaigns, unifying the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds and even expanding imperial territory in the Milky Way. In secret, Desler hoped that these wars of expansion would lead them to find a planet suitable for garmillan emigration, as their homeworld was slowly approaching the twilight of its planetary life cycle.[16][17]
However, the constant expansion of the Garmillas Empire caused the Imperial Defense Force's resources to be stretched thin, forcing the military to rely on mechanical soldiers and conscripts from conquered worlds to maintain national territory. In addition, The Desler family's private bodyguards were slowly transformed into a paramilitary organization known as the Imperial Guard. Under the command of Director General Hydom Gimleh, the Guard's military influence grew unchecked, and plans began to be put in place for it to fully replace the Imperial Force. Meanwhile, the tense political climate of the empire was reflected within the Imperial Defense Force itself. Rivalries ensued between the heads of the Central Army and the Astro Fleet. The military was also infiltrated by members of the fallen aristocracy of the Grand Duchy hostile to Desler, who plotted to use a superweapon to threaten Iscandar into gifting them a Cosmo Reverse System in hopes that it could save their dying planet.[18][19][20][21][22][23][24]
The Garmillas Civil War between the various factions of the military and the central government fully erupted in 2199. At the same time, Garmillas's latest war which had targeted the planet Earth reached a turning point, with a Earthling battleship managing to break the empire's defense lines. The rogue Planet Balun became the stage of a surprise Earthling attack in May of 2199, which destroyed a vast portion of the imperial navy and the subspace gate that linked the empire's homeland and the frontier. With most remaining naval assets stranded beyond the Magellanic Clouds, the Earthlings took on the remaining forces of the Imperial Defense Force and the Imperial Guard, toppling the Desler administration during the Battle of the Imperial Capital.[18][23][25][26][27]
The Provisional Government and the Civil War[]
Following Desler's fall, Vice Leader Redof Hiss stepped into the power vacuum left by the Supreme Leader and assumed control of a provisional government. The new government put moderate members of the Imperial Force in prominent positions and pardoned previously condemned political dissidents. A wave of reforms began sweeping the empire with the ultimate goal of transitioning to full democracy.[28][29]
Despite this, dismantling or reducing the vastity of the military complex proved impossible. Garmillas was still entangled in an ongoing conflict with the Gatlantis Empire, which had begun to expand within the Small Magellanic Cloud. The provisional government was also faced with the continuing civil war, with certain formations of the Imperial Defense Force rebelling and refusing to stand down and various terrorist groups with vastly different goals and ideals threatening the nation's stability. Under the provisional government, the empire entered an alliance with the newly founded Earth Federation, leading a joint operation against Gatlantis in late 2202 and later sending the bulk of the Astro Fleet to the Solar system to protect the Earth from the invading gatlanteans.[24][28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35]
The Civil War would end in 2203 with the re-emergence of Desler, now at the head of a vast fleet of warships. The former Supreme Leader made a peace deal with the central government and revealed the truth about Garmillas's upcoming end. While initially skeptical of the former dictator's claim, a group within the Imperial Defense Force pushed the government to carry out a survey of the planet's core which revealed the veridicality in Desler's words. Together the two sides devoted themselves to finding a new homeworld for the empire.[16][24][36][37]
Bolar and Dezariam[]
In the following years, the Imperial Defense Force collaborated with the Desler fleet to find a new home planet for the garmillans, with multiple exploratory vessels being sent out by the Astro Fleet toward every corner of space. In early 2205 the location of Planet Garmann, the ancestral long-lost home planet of the Garmillas, was leaked to Desler's forces. Since the world had fallen under the occupation of the Bolar Federation, a plan was devised by Desler and the new democratic government to take control of it. Desler negotiated with the Bolar planetary governor, but once it became clear that no peaceful solution could be arranged, his fleet seized the planet by force. After the battle, a fleet dispatched by the Imperial Force took control of the planet's occupation.[37][38]
In late 2205, planet Garmillas fell under the attack of a previously unknown alien faction called Dezariam. The regular forces and the Desler fleet collaborated to try and destroy the multiple Dezariam mobile weapons that stormed the planet's surface but obtained no significant result. Planet Garmillas was destroyed, leaving behind only 100,000 survivors in addition to those that had already moved, amounting to less than a third of the original population of the planet.[39]
