This artricle is about the IJN Yamato as depicted in Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its sequels. For the real-world ship and its counterpart in the original Space Battleship Yamato, see IJN Yamato.

Yamato (大和, Yamato) was a Japanese warship that fought in the Pacific War during World War II.

History[]

The Yamato was the largest battleship sent in battle in the Pacific War of WWII and the first ship of her class. It was sunk off of Bonomisaki Cape at the end of the war,[2] at 30 degrees 22 minutes north latitude, 128 degrees 4 minutes east longitude.[1][3]

200 years after the end of the Second World War, in 2145, the battleship's wreck, which had been broken into two pieces, was retrieved from the seabed. The hull was reconstructed and the battleship was scuttled in a formal cerimony for the bicentennial of the conflict's conclusion.[4] Years later, in the late 2190s, the rusted hull of the Yamato was used to camouflage the construction site of a space warship of the same name.[3][5]

Legacy[]

The original Yamato's legacy lives on in the form of the new space battleship Yamato, which was tasked with a mission to the planet Iscandar in 2199, and eventually came to end the Great Garmillas War, which had brought the Earthling race to the brink of extinction.[3][5][6] The spaceship would also play a significant role in the Gatlantis Campaign and the Iscandar Incident, becoming a symbol of hope for the Earthlings and the Garmillas alike.[7][8][9]

The IJN Yamato's recreation on Shambleau

Warrant Officer Mikage Kiryu, one of the new Yamato's crewmembers, had a deep fascination for the eponymous 20th century warship, and had pictures of it in her cabin. In late 2199, when Yamato encountered planet Shambleau, the world was camouflaged by a group of Zirellans who based their illusion on Kiryu's memory. Thus, a perfect copy of the IJN Yamato was recreated on the planet.[1]

Notes[]

  • According to Mikage Kiryu, the IJN Yamato had a basic displacement of 64,000 tons.[1]
  • The stats given by Kiryu in "Odyssey of the Celestial Ark" were from Yamato's refit in 1945, while the photographs she keeps in her room are from 1941.[1]
