The higher dimension, also referred to as higher-dimensional space, is an alternate universe home to the goddess Teresa of Terezart, and is where her ability to foresee the future originates. The higher dimension can be inhabited by humans, as was the case for Susumu Kodai, Yuki Mori, and Akira Yamamoto, who briefly resided in it following the end of the Golem Assault Battle.
Overview[]

Mori regains her memories
In Teresa's higher dimension, time is visible and things like who and where are not clearly defined, according to Lieutenant Akira Yamamoto's description. In this higher dimension, the souls of the deceased, who act as Teresa's messengers, can interact with the living. Moreover, in this space, phenomena that would be nearly impossible in regular space, such as Commander Yuki Mori healing from her amnesia, are possible.[1][2]

The tree decays in reaction to the corruption of the path to the future
Physically, the flow of time is perceived as a gigantic tree with branches made of light, so big that its beginning and end are beyond sight. Yamamoto believed that this tree might even be Teresa's real form. The tree sprouts from a vast sea bordered by beaches of white sand. The tree's color and shape may change, depending on how altered the path toward the best optimal future is.[2]

Teresa manifests in the Terezarium, a dimensional node
Descending from the higher dimension is possible without having to use any energy, but a vessel is needed to travel between the two planes of existence. On the other hand, ascending from regular space to the higher dimension requires a near-infinite amount of energy, which can only realistically be obtained by collapsing extra dimensions. Teresa cannot travel between the dimensional boundary separating the two universes at will since she is a high-dimensional being and cannot exist freely in a lesser dimension. However, she can manifest herself through a dimensional node, which links the two planes together.[1][2]
History[]
Teresa was born after the Terezartians ascended as mental entities and crystalized as a single being. As an inhabitant of the higher dimension, the goddess could see the entirity of the flow of time from beginning to end. She used this ability to guide humans toward the best possible outcome, however, she couldn't reveal the outcome of their actions to them beforehand, as knowing one's future would drammatically alter it.[3] In 2202, Teresa called to her planet, Terezart, the crew of the Earthling battleship Yamato, as she foresaw that would turn the flow of time toward a future where the omnicidal campaigns of the Gatlantis Empire would be stopped.[4]

Teresa merges with Yamato
In June 2203,[5] Yamato battled against Gatlantis' mobile capital, the Ark of Destruction. The battleship was heavily damaged, so the commanding officer, Susumu Kodai, ordered everyone to abandon the ship. Only Kodai, his fiancé Yuki Mori, and Akira Yamamoto remained on board. They planned to steer the battleship toward the Ark and attempt to slow it down with a suicide run. However, at that moment, the Dimensional Wave-motion Engine reached a critical point, opening a passageway between the regular space and the higher dimension, and Teresa descended and merged with Yamato. Together they destroyed the Ark, and the energy released by the fortress' collapse was sent beyond the event horizon by Teresa, pushing Yamato and the crew into the higher dimension.[2][6]

Kodai sees the future
In the higher dimension, Kodai, Mori, and Yamamoto had the opportunity to return to regular space but Kodai refused to go back due to feeling guilty for his actions during the war with Gatlantis. Only Yamamoto returned aboard the battleship. In the higher dimension, Mori healed from amnesia and tried to convince Kodai to return with her. Teresa also attempted to persuade Kodai by showing him various possible pasts and futures that awaited him, emphasizing that the power of human decisions was enough to shape the future as he chose. Finally, Teresa showed Kodai a vision of a future where he and Mori had a child together, and this convinced him to return.[2]

Yamato ascends to Teresa's dimension
Yamato then ascended to the higher dimension again. After hearing Yamamoto's report, the Earth Federation voted to sacrifice a time fault to give Yamato enough energy to surpass the boundary between dimensions and rescue Kodai and Mori. Yamato saved Kodai and Mori and returned to Earth on December 31, 2203.[5] However, after descending to regular space, Kodai could not retain the memories of the futures he saw.[2]
Notes[]
- Writer Harutoshi Fukui stated that he envisions the higher dimension as a kind of afterlife. That would be the reason why Teresa speaks through the souls of the dead.[7]
- Several of the futures and pasts Kodai witnesses in the higher dimension are scenes of the original series up to Yamato 2520.[2]
