Space Battleship Yamato Wiki

This article is about the Guipellon Class Multiple Flight Deck Astro Carrier from Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its sequels. For its counterpart in the original Space Battleship Yamato, see Multiple Flight Deck Space Carrier

The Guipellon Class Multiple Flight Deck Astro Carrier is a space-borne aircraft carrier class of the Greater Garmillan Empire operated by the Garmillas Astro Fleet. Vessels of the class saw action in most conflicts where the Garmillas Empire was involved, with certain Guipellons playing a significant role in the Great Garmillas War, Garmillas-Gatlantis War, and in the Iscandar Incident.

Armaments and Technical Specifications[]

The Guipellon Class carriers are 410 meters in length with four superimposed flight decks. The top three decks are for aircraft taking off while the bottom deck is normally emptied and prepared for aircraft landing. The bridges, located on the starboard side, have two radar sensors, with a much bigger installation on their starboard side.[4] Each carrier befitting its role, has a considerable amount of planes onboard. These can either be torpedo bombers, dive bombers, or fighters, depending on the situation. During the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster, Balgray carried DWG.109 Debake Astro Carrier Fighters, Lamvea carried DMB.87 Snuka Astro Dive Bombers, and the Schderg carried FWG.97 Doshira Astro Torpedo Bombers.[5] Most ships of their class have an angled top flight deck, with the earlier design such as Schderg being an exception. Unlike the decks of Schderg and Lamvea with flat front edges, those of Balgray are serrated. The newer bridge design was created to house enemy recon devices.[4][6][7] Ships of the class sporting the older bridge shape can be equipped with an Heavy Armed Unit.[8]

As carriers, these ships are vulnerable by design and have very few defensive weapons. Though their hulls aren’t as vulnerable to shock cannons as most other ships in the Garmillas fleet, their bridges are easily destroyed by enemy aircraft fire, as their open flight decks are a critical weakpoint, therefore having to rely on more capable escort ships like the Gelvades or Kripitera-class for defense. They are also more prone to damage by natural phenomena that other vessels could resist such as the ion turbulence, which further devastated the already damaged Lamvea during the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster.[4]

Another weakness in the ship's design is that the aircraft it launches are completely exposed during refueling operations on deck. This means that they and their munitions can be wiped out easily and in turn cause damage to their own ships.[4]

The Guipellon Class has limited living space because most of the hull is occupied by the hangars. As a result, it is not feasible to sustain the activities of the personnel for extended periods, given the number of aircraft that can be carried.[9]

History[]

Gaiperon Fleet

Guipellon fleet in Baleras

The Guipellon class was in service well before 2199. They served as the backbone of the Garmillas Astro Fleet's carrier force and were deployed across the entire Greater Garmillan Empire.[source?] A vast majority of them were assembled at Balun when Herm Zoellik ordered the bulk of the empire's navy there for an inspection. The Earth battleship Yamato arrived there not long after the fleet was fully assembled, sparking the Planet Balun Breakthrough Operation. None of the Guipellons played a part in the battle and many were likely destroyed when the gas giant's energy core went into overload and destroyed approximately seventy percent of the ten thousand vessels in the fleet.[10]

After the raid, the empire's naval power was severely diminished, and as a result, they had to rely on the Imperial Guard's ships and some of the older reserve ship,s which were recalled to the front lines. These included the Guipellon-classes Schderg, Lamvea, and Balgray, which were used by General Admiral Erich Domel during the Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster.[4][6]

Balgray, Lamvea, and Schderg were taken to Baleras to set course to the Rainbow Star Cluster. In the morning at Garmillas all the ships departed from Baleras for the Rainbow Star Cluster to attack Yamato.[6] Balgray and Schderg sank in the battle while Lamvea was heavily damaged but survived after sinking into a star cluster ion storm.[4]

The Lamvea survived the battle and set course for intergalactic space. With the Lamvea's captain dead, acting captain Berger took command and ordered the crew to make repairs and prepare to attack the Yamato. The ship was intercepted by the Mirangal and its fleet outside the Large Magellanic Cloud. Lamvea was captured along with the rest of the fleet and taken to Shambleau. The fleet commander, Neredia Ricke, ordered Berger to take a scout team to the surface of the planet, when Berger returned he went to the Mirangal and assumed command of the fleet.[11] During the Battle of Shambleau, Berger ordered the ship to escape while his fleet and the Yamato fight off their mutual enemy, during the escape the ship ran aground on the planet, the Gatlantis battleship Megaluda while sailing to take the planet's core, prepared to attack the disabled Lamvea. However the Yamato destroyed the Megaluda before any harm could come to the ship. After the battle the Lamvea recieved help from the Yamato, and left the area for Garmillas.[11]

At least three Guipellon Class ships participated in the Golem Assault Battle under the command of Ambassador Loren Burrell. One of the three ships launched a squadron of Doshira bombers and was rammed by a Gatlantean Gostoke Class.[12]

Lambea Deusura

Two Guipellon Class ship, Balmes and Lamvea, were under command of Abelt Desler in 2205. They served in Desler fleet and fought in an operation to secure planet Galman from the Bolar Federation. Later they helped evacuate Garmillan citizens from planet Garmillas.[13] Balmes was destroyed by Dezarian ships at Iscandar during the Iscandar Incident.[14] Lamvea survived the battle and returned to Galman with the rest of the Desler fleet.[15]

  5. The amount of planes a Guipellon can carry is unknown, but in "Under a Rainbow Sun", we see Balgray's airwing consist of around 40-50 Debakes (6 squads of 7-8), and Lambea's Snuka's number around 20 (atleast 6 shot down, 11-13 returned). Schderg's Doshiras number atleast 37 (as seen warping in) or slightly more. These might not be full compliments as Schderg has barely less than Balgray, but also the largest craft - therefore, Balgray and especially Lambea might not be carrying their max compliment, which is potentially around 80.
