The Guards Astro Fleet, also referred to as the Great Imperial Garmillas Guards Astro Fleet[6] or as the Greater Garmillan Empire Guards Astro Fleet,[7] was the Desler Imperial Guard's main military force during the Desler administration. It operated a large variety of ships and vehicles, formally to maintain peace and security throughout the empire, but in reality, as a means for the Imperial Guard to suppress opposition to the regime and Supreme Leader Desler.
It was organized under the Special Combat Guard.[4]

Founding and controversy[]

The Guards Astro Fleet[7][6] was founded as the main military wing of the Imperial Guard during Eternal Supreme Leader Ablet Desler's reign. Although initially created to maintain public order and ensure peace on Garmillas, in effect it was used as a means to exert the guard's military control over the Garmillan population and the Greater Garmillan Empire's colonies. The Haizerad-class Astro Battleship was developed to serve as the Astro Coast Guard Fleet's flagship, serving together vessels from the regular military.[3]
The creation of the fleet brought along a series of issues for the Imperial Guard. Hardened military men within the regular Garmillas Astro Fleet resented the idea of a naval unit existing outside of the armed forces, and, as the Imperial Guard itself quickly determined, they simply couldn't provide the manpower necessary to maintain the fleet. For this reason, the Imperial Guard Race Main Office made the decision of selecting its best soldiers from every rank, from executive to general officers, and cloning them to provide fleet personnel. The dispute with the Astro Fleet was only quelled by its Supreme Commander, Admiral Ditz, who accepted the will of Supreme Leader Desler to ensure peace between the two organizations.[3]
The Garmillas Civil War and Yamato[]

In April of 2199,[8] Imperial Guard Director General Hydom Gimleh independently spearheaded a planet-scorching strategy on the colony Planet Alteria, which risen up in revolt against the Garmillan occupation. Under GImleh's command, the Guards Astro Fleet bombed the planet's settlement, killing most of the Alterian population and the Garmillan colonists. This event caused a rift between the empire's leadership, with most moderates condemning Gimleh's actions, while other hardliners defended him claiming fear to be the only feasible method to control the Great Garmillas Empire's expanding territories.[9]

Following the devastating Planet Balun Breakthrough Operation, the bulk of the Astro Fleet remained stuck outside of the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the Imperial Guard siezed control of the Homeland Defense Fleet from the Central Army. This effectively left the Guards Astro Fleet as the only operative naval force in the empire's mainland.[10] When in July 2199[11] the Earthling battleship Yamato, which had already inflicted severe losses to Garmillas, reached the Salezar System, the Coast Guard Fleet was the only force left to oppose the ship's advance towards Garmillas. Thus, the fleet took part in the Battle of the Imperial Capital with Director Gimleh guiding the operations himself from his flagship. The battle was devastating and caused the fall of the Desler administration, Gimleh's flagship itself was engulfed in flames and the Director General was believed dead.[12][5]
After Desler's reign[]
Following the dissolution of the Imperial Guard some of the ships originally part of the Guards Astro Fleet went AWOL together with vessels from the regular forces.[13] These warships eventually fell under the control of Lt. General Ghader Talan and met with the fallen Supreme Leader Desler to form the new core of Desler fleet.[14] These ships would remain at Desler's service throughout the rest of the Garmillas Civil War and the Gatlantis Campaign and would later follow him in his search for a new home planet for the Garmillas race in collaboration with the Garmillas Provisional Government between 2204 and 2205.[14][15][16][17][18]
