The Great Unification was one of the main objectives of Supreme Leader Abelt Desler's regime. It consisted of the unification of the Greater Garmillan Empire with Iscandar. The dictator saw the unification of the two nations as his ultimate gift to Queen Stasha Iscandar, whom she deeply loved, as well as the culmination of the Desler Doctrine, the empire's chauvinist state philosophy that caused its wars of expansion under the guise of spreading the Iscandarian creed. Desler tried to fulfill the unification program by moving the imperial capital from Baleras to Baleras II and using the Iscandarian Third Princess, Yurisha Iscandar, as a pawn to claim the legitimacy of his actions.
History[]
Prelude[]

Stasha and Desler meeting
Abelt Desler, Eternal Supreme Leader of the Greater Garmillan Empire, met with Queen Stasha Iscandar following his reunification of Garmillas. There he promised Stasha he would do everything in his power to spread her philosophy throughout the universe. This way, he wished to bring about the unification of the two twin planets. In the following eleven years of his reign, the Supreme Leader began a series of bloody expansionary wars under the guise of "spreading iscandarism", Queen Stasha's guiding principle for her empire, throughout the universe. He did so out of love for the Queen, hoping to one day be worthy, in her eyes, of unifying their countries. However, the dramatic expansion of the Greater Garmillan Empire was also born out of the necessity of finding a planet where the garmillan species could emigrate to escape their dying homeworld.[4][3][5][6]

Planet bombs rendered the Earth's surface uninhabitable
In 2191, the empire began a campaign against the people of planet Earth. For almost a decade, they bombed the world with planet bombs, which rendered its surface uninhabitable due to high radiation levels and the spreading of toxic alien plants. Once Stasha discovered this, she sent her sister, Third Princess Yurisha, to Earth, with plans for building a wave-motion engine. The goal was for the earthlings to travel to planet Iscandar where they would be gifted with a Cosmo Reverse System, a piece of technology that could revert their planet to its original, blue self. To reach Iscandar, the United Nations launched the space battleship Yamato on February 11, 2199.[7][8][2]

Desler presents "Yurisha" to his people, and announces the Great Unification
Later that year, the Greater Garmillan Empire attempted an infiltration mission aboard Yamato. While the mission ultimately failed, they learned multiple pieces of information regarding the battleship, including the presence of an Iscandarian on board. Desler sought to use Yurisha to confirm to the public Iscandar's willingness to unify. To do so, in a later battle against the Earthlings, a special forces platoon boarded Yamato to kidnap the princess. However, they mistakenly abducted an earthling look alike, Lieutenant Yuki Mori, instead of the actual Yurisha. Even though Mori tried to act like Yurisha, her ruse was soon spotted by both Desler and his Minister of Propaganda. Even her guard, the Zaltzi Lieutenant Norren Oshetto, rapidly discovered her true identity but decided to continue to serve as her escort instead of ratting her out. On the other hand, Desler didn't care much whether they had the real Iscandarian or a fake, as he only needed the people to believe she was Yurisha. He proceeded to announce that Iscandar had agreed to the Great Unification at the state funeral of a fallen garmillan general.[9][10][11][12]
The Great Unification[]

Imperial Guard carriers deploy their fighters against Yamato
As Yamato neared the Salezar system, home of Iscandar and Garmillas, the empire began to prepare for war on its home-planet. The forces of the Imperial Astro Fleet had been decimated and scattered following a previous battle that had destroyed the subspace gates network, so only the Imperial Guard remained to protect the Imperial Planet. On the night between July 15 and July 16, Yamato arrived at Salezar and began to make way toward Garmillas. Despite the empire using a new wave-motion energy-based superweapon, the battleship arrived at the imperial capital Baleras unscathed.[2][1]

Desler arriving at Baleras II
Amid the battle, Desler abandoned the capital and assumed command from the space fortress Baleras II. He declared the space station to be the new capital of Garmillas and dropped one of its sectors on Baleras to annihilate Yamato and all his political enemies in the city. He announced that the Baleras II would land on Iscandar, formally unifying the two empires. However, the Earthling battleship managed to destroy the structure falling on the planet, and when Desler tried to aim his superweapon at it, he soon found out it had been sabotaged from the inside by Mori and Oshetto. The space fortress was instantly engulfed in flames, and the Eternal Supreme Leader barely managed to escape aboard his flagship. Mori also survived after her guard pushed her out of Baleras II through an airlock.[3][6][1]
Aftermath[]

The Garmillas Provisional Government
Following his failure to unify the two empires, Desler went into hiding. In place of his regime, a new provisional government headed by former Vice Leader Hiss took office. While the Greater Garmillan Empire signed an armistice with Yamato and began to transition towards a democratic form of government, the Supreme Leader assembled a fleet of loyalists to try and ambush the Earthlings on their return route to their home planet. This attack failed, and Desler was presumed to have died in the battle. In reality, he had once again cheated death and was rescued by the Gatlantis Empire.[3][13][14]
