The Great Garmillas War,[29] also simply referred to as the Garmillas War,[30] was an intergalactic conflict between the United Nations and the expanding Great Garmillas Empire. Garmillas forces dominated their adversaries for most of the war with superior technology and available military resources, and pushed Earth and the Earthlings toward extinction. With the covert intervention of the Iscandarian civilization, humanity was able to fight back and eventually bring an end to the war.
Prelude[]
In the year 2174,[31] the Grand Duke of the Garmillas Grand Duchy, Erich Vam Desler, discovered and revealed to his staff that their homeworld had reached the end of its planetary life and was going to collapse in the course of the next hundred years.[32]
After a succession war following Erich's death, the Grand Duke's nephew, Abelt Desler, declared the Great Garmillas Empire and himself as Eternal Supreme Leader. Being one of the only people aware of planet Garmillas impending doom, Desler theorized the Desler Doctrine. This chauvinist philosophy pushed the empire to undertake a series of large expansion campaigns. He hoped that by expanding the empire's borders they could encounter and conquer a world that would meet the specific criteria needed to house the Garmillans.[31][32]
In the year 2191[31] planet Earth (Teron to the Garmillans) was located in a frontier star system in the Milky Way Galaxy. The planet was considered an ideal candidate for migration, but it was already inhabited by another species, the Earthlings. Thus the empire began to prepare for an invasion.[32]
The War[]
Early hostilities[]
First contact[]
For this topic in more detail, see First Contact with Garmillas
On April 1, 2191, a fleet of garmillan warships was detected by the Uranus Survaillance Station in the outer solar system. The Japanese Fleet, headed by the famed war hero Admiral Juzo Okita, and the Inner Planetary Defense Fleet, were immediately mobilised by the United Nations Cosmo Force of United Nations Joint Forces to intercept the aliens.[19]
It was the standard garmillan tactic at that time to compel their opponent to fire first, and to than launch an invasion once they had a justifiable casus belli.[33] The United Nations fell right into the trap. Director of Military Affairs Kotetsu Serizawa ordered Okita to fire at the enemy. Once the Admiral tried to reason with his superior, suggesting not to be hasty, Serizawa removed him from his duty and took command of his fleet himself. The resulting garmillas counterattack wiped out 80% of the earthling fleet, and plundered the Earth into the greatest war in its history.[19][33]
For the next years, the United Nations lied to the general public stating that the aliens had attacked first. The entire event was put under military secret and propaganda movies were put out endorsing the UN's version of the first contact.[19]
The War advances[]
Following the first contact Garmillas passed to the offensive. The Teron Attack Force, a Garmillan space armored brigade under the command of Colonel Valcke Schulz, terraformed and established a base on Pluto. A supply base was also set up on the 11th planet and a floating continent equipped with another base was placed on Jupiter.[11][34][35]
The Cosmo Force tried to resist the invaders in the Outer Planets Defense Battle, but all their attempts failed and costed the UN five out of their eight Kongo-class Battleships, the most advanced warship class in their arsenal.[36] As the Garmillans penetrated deep in the Solar System, the United Nations Cosmo Navy reorganised its fleets and launched a massive counter-offensive using the asteroid belt as an absolute defense line.[33] The operation failed and didn't succeed in forcing the enemy to completely retreat from the inner solar system, but it did make Garmillas change their tactic for the war. They began a long-range bombing of the Earth turning objects of the Kuiper Belt into Planet Bombs, weapons of mass destruction that generate substantial radioactive contamination.[33][11][14] The Jupiter floating continent was used as a testing ground to import native garmillan plants, which were seeded on the Earth through the bombs, completely ruining its biosphere.[11][34] This was the first step of the "garmillasforming" process which was meant to make Earth inhabitable by the Garmillas people.[32][11]
The first bomb fell on Japan on April 2, 2192. The UN Forces immediately understood that the tragedy had been an alien attack, but revealing this would have meant admitting the overwhelming difference in scientific power between the Earth and the invaders.[19][33] Despite this, by 2193 the truth about the planet bombs had become common knowledge.[37] Eventually the ongoing bombing drove the Earthlings from the surface into underground cities, where pollution and lack of resources seemingly all but doomed their race to a slow, agonizing extinction.[11]
In 2198, after 6 years of non-stop bombing, the UN Cosmo Navy devised Operation K2 as a massive offensive to drive the Garmillas forces beyond the orbit of Mars. Once again under the command of Okita the reorganised Cosmo Navy menaged to succeed, thanks in part to the adoption of positron shock cannons, a new anti-ship weapon capable of one-shotting garmillan vessels.[33] The battle also gave the UNCN the possibility to study and reverse engineer the garmillan ships defensive coating, which was later equipped on certain vessels.[38] This victory however, came at a massive loss of ships and personnel.[11]
The dying Earth[]
In the following year the situation on the Earth continued to decline. The siege completely destroyed all U.N.F. naval and ground assets, while the UNCF forces significantly dwindeled in numbers.[16][11] The UNCF Space Defense Command, headed by Admiral Ryu Hijikata, took command of the defenses of the Earth's surface, taking over the role of the now incapacitated UN Ground and Air Forces.[39] Under Hijikata, an absolute defense line was established in orbit of the Moon.[40] There, the UNCF had established a base, which was guarded by a garrison that included at least one Cosmo Marine regiment.[7] Scientists reported that before the end of 2199, the underground cities' systems would pass the point of no return, and by failing would doom their inhabitants to extinction.[11][41] It was also predicted that, before the end of the century, mankind would not be able to withstand the ongoing global environmental changes and that the Earth would reach the limit of self-sufficiency, including in terms of energy.[42]
With this prospect looming over them, each country within the United Nations began independently planning ways to survive, and the possibility of migrating to other planets was considered. The Far-East District Military Affairs Bureau devised Project Izumo, a plan to create an evacuation vessel, that would have allowed a selected number of civilians to escape the Earth and create a new home for themselves on another planet.[7][43] One of the most prominent officials behind the project was Serizawa, who had become the Military Affairs Bureau director for the UN Far-East District under Chief Administrator Heikuro Todo.[44]
A ray of light came in the form of unexpected communications between the distant planet of Iscandar and Earth, with a representative in Yurisha Iscandar, sister to Queen Stasha, arriving to aid humanity. Iscandar would provide an incredible technological boon to reset Earth back to its livable state: the Cosmo Reverse System. However, humanity would have to travel to Iscandar to obtain it and then bring it back to Earth. With this newfound hope the United Nations scrapped Project Izumo and launched the much more daring Program Yamato, Heikuro Todo of the UN Space Agency took command of the project's planning.[45] However at that time the Earthling species had never left their star system due to a lack of technology, so Stasha sen her other sister Sasha with another piece of technology, the wave-motion core, which would allow them to build an engine capable of performing warp travel.[7][11]
Operation M[]
For this topic in more detail, see First Battle of Pluto (2199)
To make sure the wave-motion core would not possibly fall into enemy hands, on January 2199 the UNCN made one last, desperate plan. Codenamed "Operation M," this was an all or nothing gambit on the part of the exhausted earth fleet, to use all their remaining ships[46] combined into the First Fleet to act as a distraction for the Garmillas forces while the special package was retrieved from Iscandar. The bulk of the fleet was led by Okita commanding the battleship Kirishima. The ensuing engagement was brief and one-sided as the Earth ships were wiped out with little damage to the Garmillas fleet. By the time the Iscandarian vessel was detected burning towards Mars, only Kirishima out of all the ships made it back to Earth.[7][11]
Yamato's early journey[]
Yamato retakes the Solar System[]
While Operation M was a resounding tactical defeat, leaving Earth with only the Kirishima for defense, the UNCN was able to initiate the Yamato Plan. The space battleship Yamato, originally planned to escape Earth and settle humanity on another planet under Project Izumo, was rebuilt with the alien technology to be used to undertake a mission to obtain the Cosmic Reverse System from Iscandar.[7][11]
Despite two attacks by Schulz over the battleship's construction site, On February 11, 2199,[33] Yamato menaged to take off under Okita's command. The following day[33] it warped to Jupiter, where they discovered the Garmillas floating continent hidden in the planet's atmosphere. The battleship used its wave-motion gun (a weapon of mass destruction built using the iscandarian theory of wave-motion energy) for the first time, completely obliterating the continent and surprising Garmillas command in the solar system.[34][47]
After battling Garmillas at the Saturnian moon Enceladus,[47] Admiral Okita and the battleship's officers were forced to choose whether or not to carry out an operation against the enemy base on Pluto. After some hesitation, they committed Yamato to a full assault on Pluto. During the attack, Yamato faked being sunk and hid in the Plutonian ocean. Believing he had destroyed the battleship, Schulz reported his victory to Imperial Headquarters and Supreme Leader Abelt Desler himself. When Yamato resurfaced and attacked the base directly, Schulz managed to escape but having already reported the earethlings' defeat to Desler, he and his remaining forces were now forced to follow the enemy battleship and either destroy it or die trying.[14][12]
Having eliminated all of the Garmillas Empire's presence in the solar system, and with Earth now safe from further attacks from planet bombings, Yamato left the solar system to continue its journey to Iscandar.[48]
Desler takes the field[]
In the following weeks, Desler found himself interested in Yamato's journey. He devised an operation to destroy the battleship at the M-class red dwarf star Gliese 581 which consisted in trapping Yamato inside a plasma corridor near the star, blocking it between the red dwarf's deadly heat and a special gaseous creature capable of absorbing everything it encounters for sustenance, which the empire had found in one of its systems. The battle was live-streamed to Desler and his entourage during a celebration of the empire's founding. Schulz was tasked with chasing Yamato into the corridor, while Major General Gremdt Goer, commander of the Galactic Theater's operation, was tasked with planning and coordinating the battle. The effort proved to be ineffective, Yamato managed to escape by firing its DWIE at one of the star's solar flares, creating a rift and allowing it to pass through, and Schulz's flagship was sunk by one of the star's solar prominences. Despite the failure of the operation, the pleased Desler promoted all fallen soldiers by two ranks. In addition, Okita suffered a relapse in health due to the stress of combat.[49]
Having understood the Leader's personal interest in the action of the Yamato, Imperial Marshall Herm Zoellik, Inspector General of the Central Army and the second-most influential figure in the Garmillan military after Desler, contacted Goer personally. The Marshall feared to have his position in the empire weakened due to Goer's recent failure in stopping the earthlings since he had been the one who recommended him as commander of the Galactic Theater. To please his superior Goer set off with his fleet to hunt down Yamato. The battleship had remained stranded inside of a dimensional fault together with a garmillan cruiser, which was carrying an Imperial Guard officer and the daughter of the supreme commander of the Astro Fleet, Gul Ditz. Ditz's daughter acted as a liaison officer between the two warships, which together found a way to escape to normal space. At that point the Imperial Guard officer contacted the Major General, allowing him to locate the enemy battleship. Following a brief skirmish most of Goer's fleet was destroyed by a previously undetected dimensional quake caused by the closing dimensional fault, while Ditz's cruiser was sunk by friendly fire leaving the young officer stranded aboard Yamato.[21]
Ditz was kept prisoner in a cell both to contain her but also in order to protect her from crewmembers turning violent against her. She revealed to the officers who had negotiated with her that the war had not actually been started by her people, but rather by the earthlings, a truth that, despite being known to Okita and two other officers, various sailors aboard Yamato did not want to believe in. Despite the initial hostilities Ditz was eventually released, the relatively kind treatment she received aboard the Earth battleship and the relations she formed with the ship's officers would eventually pave the way for cooperation between the Earth forces and the Ditz loyalists in the Garmillas military.[19][50]
Following the event, Desler's interest in Yamato's journey only grew. As the battleship left the Milky Way, the Supreme Leader began to figure out that the earthlings had been contacted by Stasha.[51]
Domel's campaign[]
Domel's early efforts[]
Just as Zoellik had predicted Goer's series of failure caught the eye of Desler. The Supreme Leader got Admiral Ditz to personally contact Elk Domel, a war hero who at the time was in charge of a military campaign against the Gatlantis Empire.[19] Under the guise of promoting him and awarding him with a medal Desler called Domel back to Garmillas's capital, and gave him command of the Galactic Theater in place of Goer who was demoted to deputy commander. In addition, he ordered him to take care of Yamato before it became an actual threat to the empire's stability.[51]
Before taking off for the Balun Military Base, the main headquarters for GBalun Military Baselactic Theater operations, Domel personally requested the prototype Dimensional Submarine UX-01 to Ditz. Despite the ship being technically under the Leader's direct command, Ditz agreed to let Domel use it in his campaign.[51]
Under Domel's orders UX-01 carried out an ambush against Yamato at a protoplanetary system. There Okita suffered another debelitating attack due to his condition, and was forced to be operated. During the battle the battleship was target of a series of extradimensional attack carried out by the submarine's crew that left it badly damaged and killed five crewmembers. Thanks to the ingenious effort of the ship's tactics officer they were able to locate and destroying UX-01's periscope, leaving the submarine blinded and causing the battle to result in a stalemate.[13]
Psychic warfare[]
For this topic in more detail, see Psychic Attack on Yamato
In the following month Miezela Celestella, Minister of Propaganda and Information of the Garmillas Empire, as well as one of Desler's closest confidants, independently planned a psychic attack on Yamato. Using an ancient Archelian device left in the lower section of the Balun Military Base, the Zirel special officer Mirenel Linke of the Central Intelligence Department projected her spirit towards Yamato, making the crew fall into a trance with the objective of luring the battleship toward the base and capture it.[24][52]
However, the Minister was unaware of the fact that aboard Yamato was the unconscious Yurisha, who had fallen into a coma following a terrorist attack in 2198.[37] She had secretly been kept alive in cryogenic sleep and the earthlings were using her memories to trace a route towards Iscandar. The presence of the Zirel psycher was enough to awaken her. Thanks to her effort and those of two Yamato crewmates who were on a recon mission at the time of the attack and had thus not been affected by it, Linke's spirit di lei was trapped and killed, leading to the operation's failure. However, part of the information that the special officer had found was retrieved by Celestella, albeit scrambled, including the presence of an Iscandarian on board. While still not able to control her own body Yurisha's spirit took control of the body of an Earthling Warrant Officer.[24][26]
Carell 163 and Desler's visit[]
In the days following the Minister's failure, Desler planned a visit on Balun of which only Admiral Ditz, Domel and the base's officers were informed. In order to please the Supreme Leader, Domel's 6th Armored Space Division laid down a plan to stop Yamato once and for all. By tracing the battleship's course they concluded that it was moving toward Beemela 4, along a trajectory that would put them in the general vicinity of a neutron star, Carell 163. Knowing that the neutron star's gravity well would interfere with Yamato's warp, Domel divided his troops throughout the various possible warp-out points, once the earthlings were detected all forces would converge and crush their enemy. Initially the plan was successfull, with an heavily damaged Yamato barely managing to ram through the first wave of garmillan ships, but as soon as the second wave arrived to the battlefield and began to riddle the almostr defenseless battleship Domel recieved an order to stand down and retreat directly by Vice Leader Redof Hiss.
Desler's personal flagship had been sabotaged as the Supreme Leader traveled to Balun, seemingly killing the dictator, as one of the few aware of Desler's journey towards the planet Domel was the prime suspect.[53]
War in the Large Magellanic Cloud[]
Zoellik's plot and the Garmillas Civil War[]
For this topic in more detail, see Planet Balun Breakthrough Operation
In reality, the plot to assassinate Desler had been orchestrated by Zoellik and his loyalists, with his objective being to take out Desler, make Ditz and Domel, his two primary enemies inside of the armed forces, take the blame, and then seize the imperial throne.[15][37]
For his plan to reach completion, he began to organize a massive naval review at the Balun Military Base, there he planned to announce the death of Desler and to incite the fleet gathered at Balun against the central government. Initially the plan was a success, 10,000 ships gathered at the planet, coming from the most distant corners of the empire, however unbeknownst to the Imperial Marshall the Imperial Guard and the Ministry of Propaganda were fully aware of his objectives. Desler had secretly been switched Desler with a lookalike and had been hiding aboard the UX-01 for the past weeks. His reemergence interrupted Zoellik's speech to his gathered troops, and coincided with Yamato's arrival to Balun through the planet's Subspace gate to the Milky Way.[15]
Having been unmasked as a traitor Zoellik was summarily executed by Goer, while Yamato, which had faked being sunk inside of Balun's atmosphere, resurfaced on the other side of the planet and used its Wave-motion gun to destroy the artificial planet's core. The subsequent planetary collapse destroyed circa 7,000 garmillan ships with the earth battleship barely making the escape by entering the Subspace gate for the Large Magellanic Cloud, which exploded soon thereafter. With the gate destroyed the surviving vessels remained stranded near Balun, with three months worth of travelling being necessary for them to return to the empire's capital. Goer took command of the surviving fleet and turned the helm towards Garmillas.[15]
Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster[]
For this topic in more detail, see Battle of the Rainbow Star Cluster
Following the turmoil at Balun, Domel was released from custody and reintegrated into the empire's military. With most of the remaining Astro Fleet forces stuck outside of the Magellanic Cloud, the defense of the empire's home territories fell completely on the Imperial Guard effectively giving them complete military control over the nation. In these conditions Domel and his commanders were only allowed control of a small fleet consisting of five carriers and Domel's personal flagship, Domelaze III, with which they were entrusted to stop Yamato. The Colonel General was also given a new mission alongside his previous one: to capture the Iscandarian Princess aboard the earth battleship. Desler planned to use Yurisha as a puppet to move forward with the unification of his empire with the dying remnants of Iscandar's own.[50][52][26]
The battle took place in the Rainbow Star Cluster, a particularly active area of space located at the center of the Tarantula Nebula really hazardous to navigate. There Domel used a delayed detonation missile to block Yamato's DWIE and slowly destroy the ship from the inside out.[23]
Meanwhile, a special forces platoon infiltrated the battleship to capture Yurisha. However due to the information they had received on the princess having been compromised by Linke's death, the boarding party mistakenly kidnapped Yuki Mori, an Earthling Lieutenant nearly identical to the alien princess. During the boarding operation, Yurisha and a security guard who was escorting her encountered the enemy infiltrators. The officer was shot down which caused Yurisha's host to suffer a shock powerful enough to knock the Iscandarian's spirit back to her own body, finally awakening it.[23]
The tide of the battle turned when Yamato's crew managed to eject the missile from the Wave-motion Gun's muzzle. The battleship then faced off against the garmillan fleet directly, destroying all ships except one badly crippled carrier, which sunk in the Cluster's ionic perturbance. having been defeated, but refusing to stand down, Domel self-destructed his flagship's autonomous bridge unit, but not before hailing his enemy and congratulating the brilliancy of Admiral Okita's tactics.[23]
Riot on Leptapoda: the Civil War turns[]
For this topic in more detail, see Uprising on Prison Camp 17
While Domel was released from prison once the dust settled, Ditz was interned on prison planet 17, Leptapoda, a planet-wide prison camp for political prisoners. However, his daughter, Merda Ditz, and a group of his most loyal subordinates began to orchestrate a revolt on camp to free him. The damaged Yamato, which headed to the planet for repairs, was caught in the riot. Once Ditz's group obtained full control of the detainment facilty a meeting was held between his staff and rapresentatives of Yamato, including Yurisha. The two sides could not immediately set aside their difference, but the meeting proved to be pivotal as it allowed the UNCN to gain substantial information regarding the nature of the relationship between Garmillas and Iscandar, which the Iscandarians never fully revealed out of fear that it would discourage Earth from accepting their gift, as well as insights on the inner workings of the Garmillas Empire. The two sides also agreed on a non-aggression pact and Merda Ditz was assigned as a liaison and once again boarded Yamato. this time completely voluntarily.[50][54]
Following the meeting Ditz and his forces began their own campaign against the empire, he set his eyes on the other prison planets with the intention of freeing their prisoners. Yamato instead moved towards the Salezar system, home to Garmillas and Iscandar.[50]
Abelt Desler's war[]
For this topic in more detail, see Battle of the Imperial Capital
Soon after the uprising on Leptapoda, Lieutenant Mori was safely presented to Supreme Leader Desler and his entourage. Both he and Celestella quickly figured out that the officer was not the real Yurisha, but the dictator did not care much as he only needed the people to believe the princess had agreed to the Unification. To ensure the popular support Desler publicly announced "Yurisha's" agreeing to his projects at the state funeral for the defunct Domel.[50]
Knowing full well that Yamato was moving for Salezar Desler's staff prepared for a battle in their home territory. Imperial Guard Director Hydom Gimleh personally prepared a large fleet to guard the homeworld while Desler charged Armaments Minister Welte Talan with the ultimation of Baleras II, a mobile space city-fortress, which was to house the Leader's trump card, the Desler cannon, a wave-motion weapon similar to Earth's DWIE.[3][50]
Between July 15 and July 16[33] the Battle of the Imperial Capital unfolded throughout the entirity of the star system. Yamato arrived to the Salezar system on the fifteenth, immediately Desler tried to sink it using the Desler cannon, but failed and instead hit and destroyed the system's fourth planet Epidora. Having been attacked first, Okita's priority changed from reaching Iscandar to neutralising the more immediate threat; the earth battleship thus moved towards Garmillas at subluminar speed and engaged the Imperial Guard fleet both in orbit and in atmosphere of the planet. Yamato quickly reached Baleras and rammed Baleras Tower. Lieutenant Susumu Kodai, the ship's tactics officer, prepared to lead a strike group to seize the Tower, but at that moment Desler separated his flagship's coreship from the building, and escaped towards Baleras II. The coreship was the energy core of a second Desler cannon, which had secretly been built inside of the tower by the noblemen of the fallen Grand Duchy. Their objective was to use the weapon to force Iscandar into giving them a Cosmo Reverse System in hopes that it could save their dying planet. Desler disdained this course of action, partially because the CRS had no guarantee of succeeding in a planet that was dying of natural causes, but mostly due to his love for Queen Stasha.[3][50]
By escaping the capital he put the Great Unification in motion, he moved the capital to Baleras II and dropped one of the fortress' industrial blocks on Baleras. This way he would have destroyed all of his enemies in one fell swoop, but his plan was thwarted by Yamato itself which fired its Wave-motion Gun, destroying the industrial block and saving the people of the garmillan capital. At the same time Lieutenant Mori and a Zaltzi collaborator sabotaged Baleras II from the inside so that once Desler tried to fire his cannon at Yamato, the entire space station collapsed and exploded, seemingly killing the dictator.[3]
A newfound peace[]
As Desler escaped and threatened Baleras, Vice Leader Hiss moved in to declare a state of emergency. Despite having been often relegated to being a mere figurehead under the Leader's reign, he rapidly filled the power vacuum and declared a new Provisional Government with himself as Prime Minister. Immediately after the battle Okita suffered another relapse in health caused by his illness which this time proved to be debilitating, forcing the Admiral on a wheelchair for the following months. Yamato then turned its helm towards Iscandar where a delegation of officers met with Queen Stasha.[3][55][56]
The monarch initially had some setbacks in handing the earthlings the promised Cosmo Reverse due to their militarised use of Wave-motion Energy. Following a solemn promise made by Okita on the non-use of Wave-Motion weaponry, the Queen gifted the Earth with the CRS. Despite not being entrusted with the full authority of the UN, the captain signed an armistice with Hiss's government and Stasha known as the Earth Iscandar Treaty of Amity and Garmillas-Earth Interim Agreement, the tentative peace agreement also included a provision banning the usage of DWIEs. A few days later the battleship left Iscandar and began its journey back towards the Earth.[56][57]
Desler's last stand[]
For this topic in more detail, see Battle with Desler in Subspace
Two months after[58] it left Iscandar Yamato found itself near Balun. Since the Subspace gate for the Milky Way had remained intact following the battle months prior the crew wished to use it to more quickly reach the Earth. There however the battleship was ambushed by Major General Goer and Desler himself, who had managed to escape the destruction of Baleras II aboard his flagship, Deusura II. Desler and his forces boarded Yamato to capture it, but they were defeated and Deusura II was destroyed as Desler tried to use its Desler cannon to bring an end to the already lost battle. Despite being seemingly killed the Supreme Leader once again cheated death and escaped aboard Deusura's coreship.[59]
This would be the last battle of the Great Garmillas War, despite a high loss of personnel Yamato itself came out relatively unscathed and returned to the Earth on December 8 of 2199. Okita, now bedridden, managed to get one last look at his home planet before passing away.[60] In 2200, the conflict officially came to an end, with a peace treaty being signed by the Earth and Garmillas in 2201.[29][61]
Legacy[]
Rebuilding the Earth[]
The Earth as a planet[]
After Yamato's return and the activation of the Cosmo Reverse System, the Earth's biosphere was healed, and the planet became habitable once again.[60][62] In 2199, soon after Yamato's return, the Earth Rebuilding Project was begun.[61] In the following years the Earth's oceans and vegetation were restored, but the damage caused by the Planet Bombs remains visible as far as late 2205 with impact craters and reddish soil still existing throughout the surface.[62][63] Reconstruction progress was slow worldwide, with noticeable effects mostly in specific areas like the Far-East District. As of 2202, there were still areas where people were living in underground cities.[64]
In 2201, a mysterious phenomenon left behind by the CRS was discovered beneath Japan. Appropriately called Reverse Syndrome, the phenomenon consisted of a time fault where time passed ten times as fast as it did outside. Permanence in the fault could have dire effects on living organisms; even with a full protection suit, the human body could not stand more than an hour within it, while without protection they would be dead within ten minutes. In the years following its discovery the time fault was used by the Earth to rebuild its armed forces, but was sacrificed in late 2203 after a referendum.[65][66]
The Earth as a nation[]
Following Yamato's return and the end of the war the Earth's governing structure and leadership underwent a massive reorganization.[67] The United Nations were dissolved and left their place to the Earth Federation. The UN's successor state was born with the idea of unifying all of the national governments of the Earth into a single central executive, but this transition of power would take years to complete.[68] Despite this, the first E.F.G. President had taken office by 2202.[62]
Following its creation, control of the UN forces was passed to the Earth Federation, and Heikuro Todo and General Serizawa were named U.N.F. General Commanding Director and General Commanding Deputy Director respectively.[69] Despite the provision against wave-motion weaponry written in the Treaty of Amity and Garmillas-Earth Interim Agreement, the new federal government did not recognize the agreement, as it had only been signed by the captain of a battleship who hadn't been invested with the complete authority of the Earth. Thus the UNCN embarked on a massive remilitarisation campaign building a new massive fleet equipped with wave-motion guns. The process of building this fleet was opposed by the commander of the Space Defense Command, Admiral Hijikata, but his efforts proved null and he was demoted and sent away to take command of the Outer Defense Division. The militarization of the Cosmo Navy was aided by the discovery of the time fault, where a factory was set up by the armed forces.[62][65][70]
Despite having been heavily criticized, the new Cosmo Navy served an essential part in the Gatlantis Campaign in 2203.[71][72][73]
Garmillas: civil war and democracy[]
Following the new government's takeover the most brutal and oppressive aspects of garmillan society, including the Imperial Guard, were dropped. After Hiss denounced Desler and assumed the post of Prime Minister, the new government began earnestly constructing a new political system while trying to maintain national order. The members of Ditz's faction were reinstated in the chain of command and the Garmillas Empire began a transition towards democracy. The new government was aided by Princess Yurisha, who became a new symbol for the people of the empire after the loss of their strong leader. Despite the wave of reforms, reducing the size of the military proved to be impossible, especially considering the growing threat of the Gatlantis Empire at the borders of the Small Magellanic Cloud.[55][59][69]
The empire's new policies did not stop the ongoing civil war. New factions emerged with opposite ideals: the Destruction Liberation Army, born out of discontent with the government not granting independence to all of the worlds annexed under Desler's reign, and the Desler Regime Revivalists, a group secretly led by the thought-to-be-dead Gimleh which wished to reinstate a dictatorship. In 2203, while the Gatlantis Campaign raged on, Desler himself reappeared and took command of a massive fleet of warships. He initially sided with Gatlantis under its Emperor's promise to gift the garmillan race a new homeworld, but he later switched sides and decided to align himself with the Earth-Garmillas joint forces. The civil war would end with peace between the central government and Desler's faction, following which the two powers allied to find a new home for their people.[32][66][74][75][76][77]
By 2205 the first elected government of the empire had taken office.[77]
Relationship between Earth and Garmillas[]
Even before the official end of the conflict, in September 2199, as Yamato was returning to the Earth, the battleship allied with a Garmillan fleet to fight against hostile Gatlantean forces.[78]
In the years following the official end of the Great Garmillas War, the Earth welcomed garmillan dignitaries and an embassy was opened on the Moon with Loren Burrell, one of the signatories of the Earth-Garmillas Peace Treaty, as ambassador. A mutual security agreement was also signed by the two powers. The 11th planet, which had been turned into a garmillan supply base during the war, was turned into a joint colony of the Earth Federation and the Garmillas Empire. There the colonists managed to coexist in a relatively peaceful way, with the Garmillans even adopting Earth customs for themselves such as Christmas. Usage of the time fault was also sold to the Garmillas Empire by the federal government in exchange for several colony worlds which the empire didn't have any use for, the deal included all the resources and the colonists of these planets.[33][62][65]
In December 2202 the Earth Federation joined Garmillas in a mission to retake the 8th Floating continent, which had been captured by Gatlantis two months prior.[70] Their participation in the battle would lead the Earth to get entangled in the Gatlantis Empire's campaigns.[72][73]

- ↑ in The Forever War two contrasting dates are given for the Battle with Desler in Subspace, 2 months after Yamato took off from Iscandar and 8 months after it left Earth. The first would date the battle in September, while the second would set it in October (as per the dates given in The Era of Space Battleship Yamato: Choice of 2202). This is seemingly due to the fact that then production crew erroneously assumed that the took off date from earth was January 17, which is actually the date of Operation M
