This article is about the Gelvades Class Astro Battleship-carrier from Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its sequels. For its counterpart in the original Space Battleship Yamato, see Combat Aircraft Carrier
The Gelvades Class Astro Battleship-carrier is a battleship-carrier class in service in the Imperial Garmillas Defense Force. Due to its high prouction cost, only a small number of Gelvades were ever produced, and they are relatively rare on the battlefield.
Certain Gelvades Class ships played significant roles in the Great Garmillas War, hunt for the World of Tranquillity, and in the Gatlantis Campaign.
Armaments and Technical Specifications[]
The Gelvades Class is a battleship-carrier, meaning it functiones both as a battleship and a carrier. The class has 2 triple 280mm turrets superimposed fore and aft, 2 triple 133mm turrets on each side, 2 6 shot missile launchers and 10 anti air laser cannon turrets. It also has a set of rotating deck plates housing six triple positron cannon turrets, 2 280mm and 4 133mm and thirty-two anti-air laser cannons. In addition, under the hull, it is also equipped with an additional weapons complement of four triple 133mm positron cannon turrets and 2 six tube missile launchers for a massive total armament.[4]
As an aircraft carrier, Gelvades can carry one DBG.88 Garont heavy bomber on her flight deck, and fifty-two DWG.262 Czvarkes combat fighters or sixty-four DWG.109 Debakes fighters in her hangar.[4]
The Gelvades Class is also heavily armored, able to resist multiple direct hits from Gatlantean weapons fire even from multiple ships, which would have easily destroyed other Garmillas warships.
History[]
Origins[]
The Gelvades Class was developed by the Department of Armaments' Weapons Development Agency. The Darold was among the first vessels of the class, it was painted red to distinguish it as a testbed ship. Despite its performance, the class was considered too expensive as it cost twice as much as a regular battleship, thus it was decided for only a small amount of Gelvades Class to be developed.[4]
Under Domel[]

Darold at Baleras
In 2199, Darold was handed over to General Admiral Elk Domel in preparation for an attack on the Yamato, which had destroyed 70% of the Garmillas fleet at Balun. Darold led by Colonel Dora Barek met with the main fleet at Baleras to prepare for battle. Darold carried a DBG.88 Garont Heavy Bomber equipped with a Special Rock Drill Missile to use on the enemy battleship. Darold departed the morning of Garmillas' time with the fleet and would run program 728 towards the Rainbow Star Cluster.[5] Darold launched the Garont led by veteran Vance Barlen. After receiving news that Attack Force 3 was met with resistance from fighter Yamato, Darold charged in front of Domelaze III. When the fleet met with Yamato, Darold who had opened the battle deck, immediately opened fire on Yamato. However, the detonator that had broken through the muzzle of the Yamato Wave-Motion Cannon let go and headed for Darold. The Colonel ordered an evasive maneuver but Yamato fired the detonator directly above Darold causing it to be destroyed with the Schderg multi-deck carrier hitting the wreck and being destroyed with it.[6]
Hunt for the World of Tranquillity[]
Two Gelvades named Mirangal and Nirvales respectively under the command of Colonel Neredia Ricke in the 8th Security Fleet. In August 2199,[7] Mirangal and Nirvales are assigned to rendezvous with Lamvea which was badly damaged after the Battle outside the Magellan's cloud. After meeting with Lamvea, suddenly the entire fleet disappeared and found themselves on the mysterious planet Shambleau.

Mirangal leads the 8th Security Fleet into battle
While Colonel Ricke was away aboard Lamvea, Berger returned from a scouting mission to Shambleau and abruptly assumed command of Mirangal in the colonel's absence, and joined the Garmillan task force with the Earth battleship Yamato to repel an attack from a Gatlantean expeditionary group. Mirangal along with Nirvales launched squadrons of Czvarke fighters before switching its flight deck to multi-turret mode. The Nirvales sank with two other ships, while the Mirangal, with help from Yamato, managed to avoid a powerful blast from the new enemy gun. Near the end of the Battle, the Garmillas fleet was wiped out, leaving the Mirangal as the only ship left, She singlehandedly fought and sank multiple Gatlantis vessels but suffered severe damage while doing so from return fire. Her service ended when Berger personally took the helm and made a full speed run toward one of the remaining Gatlantis destroyers. The enemy target was destroyed upon impact, but the carrier was shattered. The surviving Mirangal crew, including Berger, were rescued by Lamvea under Ricke's command.[8]
Desler Fleet[]

Two Gelvades Class carriers behind the Super Gelvades
In the year 2203, three Gelvades class ships were present in a fleet under the command of Ghader Talan and loyal to deposed Garmillas leader Abelt Desler, after Desler destroyed a Gatlantis fleet entrusted to him by Emperor Zworder.[9] During the Blockade of Terezart, a Gelvades under the command of Ghader Talan attacked the Yamato and damaged the rudder.[10] After the conflict with the Yamato at Terezart, another six Gelvades waited with hundreds of other ships.[11] The two Gelvades assisted in the evacuation of the Deusura's coreship after the last final conflict with Yamato.[12]
Following the end of the Garmillas Civil War and the peace between the central government and Desler's faction, the Leader was granted two new flagship: a prototype Super Gelvades Class astro transport ship and the Deusura III, the design of the first was inspired by the Gelvades Class, while the second was a direct successor of the class, developed as part of a space battlecarrier development plan advanced by Garmillas's Weapons Development Agency. Notes[]
- Note that the fighter complements are a rough estimate based on the known available hangar space; It is very likely that such a large number would never be carried on these ships, which is why it is labeled as "full capacity", instead of "full complement".
