The Garmillas Astro Fleet,[6] also known as the Garmillas Astro Force[7] and formerly known as the Great Imperial Garmillas Astro Fleet or as the Greater Garmillan Empire Astro Fleet,[8] was the space navy branch of the Imperial Garmillas Defense Force and the primary military force of the Greater Garmillan Empire. Consisting of many thousands of warships, it was one of the most powerful military forces in the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Small Magellanic Cloud, and extended its presence into the Milky Way Galaxy. It was seriously contested only by the Gatlantis Empire, however the expantionist policy of the Empire and the losses it suffered due to the Planet Balun Breakthrough Operation in 2199 seriously weakened it.

Despite this, the Astro Fleet continued to be a force to reckoned with, playing a significant role in the Gatlantis Campaign and in the rising tension between the empire and the Bolar Federation.

The Great Imperial Garmillas Astro Fleet was the space navy branch of the Imperial Garmillas Defense Force. It was headed by the Astro Fleet General Headquarters and its Supreme Commander, Admiral Gul Ditz, who was briefly deposed in 2199 following his arrest by the Imperial Guard but was later reinstated with the end of Desler's regime.[2][9][10]

All of the Greater Garmillan Empire naval units were organized under the Astro Fleet, with the only exceptions being the Security Fleets, Garmillas's military police organized under the General Staff, the Central Army's Homeland Defense Fleet and, under the Desler administration, the Imperial Guard's Guards Astro Fleet. Despite this, some fleets could have been organized outside of the Astro Fleet's command structure, such as the naval forces of the Teron Attack Force or the Goer Guard Fleet,[11] both of which were part of the Galactic Area Army and thus under the direct command of the Imperial Defense Force General Staff.[2]

Notable units under the Astro Fleet included the Armored Space Division, the Planetary Domination Astronaut Corps and the Deep Space task Fleet, directly under Admiral Ditz's command.[2]

During the Greater Garmillan Empire's expansionary campaigns undertaken by the Desler administration, the Great Imperial Garmillas Astro Fleet became one of the pillars of the empire, extending its influence well into the Milky Way.[2] Early in Desler's reign, it entered into a conflictual relationship with the newly founded Imperial Guard. The guard needed more personnel and strictly selected pure-blooded garmillans for its ranks. However, most of the fit personnel was taken to expand the regular military, mainly the Astro Fleet. This led the Imperial Guard to use cloned soldiers to replenish their ranks. Additionally, when the guard founded the Guards Astro Fleet, many military men questioned the creation of a fleet separated from the armed forces, and the discontent was only sedated by Admiral Ditz, Astro Fleet Supreme Commander, working the will of the Supreme Leader.[12] In the following decade, the constant expansion of the Garmillas Empire caused the Defense Force's resources, including the Astro Fleet, to be stretched thin, forcing the military to rely on mechanical soldiers and conscripts from conquered worlds to maintain national territory.[9]

In 2199, Supreme Leader Abelt Desler fell victim to an assassination attempt. Admiral Ditz and his close subordinate General Admiral Domel, Galactic Theater Operation Commander, were the only ones aware of the Leader's movements and were thus the primary suspects. Ditz was arrested and interned on Leptapoda, one of the empire's prison planets.[9][13] In reality, the assassination attempt had been carried out by Imperial Marshall Herm Zoellik of the Central Army, who tried to kill the Supreme Leader and put the blame on his major political and military rivals. This way, Zoellik believed he could take control of the Astro Fleet and the empire.[2][14][5] The Marshall began assembling the bulk of the empire's naval forces at the planet Balun under the guise of a naval review. He hoped to convince the large fleet to follow him in revolt against the central government and take control of the nation. However, Desler had survived Zoellik's plot and was waiting in hiding to publicly reveal the Imperial Marshall's treachery. The Supreme Leader hijacked the traitor's communication system and outed his plans, prompting one of Zoellik's subordinates to summarily execute him. While these events unfolded, the Earthling battleship Yamato led a surprise attack at Balun. It used its Wave-motion Gun to destroy the planet's artificial core before escaping through the Large Magellanic Cloud subspace gate.[5] The attack caused a planetary collapse, which engulfed both the large fleet and the subspace gate, rendering it useless. Of the 10,000 ships gathered at Balun, only 3,000 survived, and without the gate, the surviving fleet was forced to undertake a months-long journey to return to the home planet.[15][16]

With Zoellik's treachery revealed, Domel was released and was tasked to stop Yamato. Ditz, on the other hand, remained in prison, and the Imperial Guard began to crack down and arrest all officers loyal to him. Ditz's loyalists organized an operation to free him from Leptapoda and take control of the planet. Following his liberation, Ditz and his men met with officers from Yamato, creating the basis for future peaceful relations between the two sides. They then set course to liberate other planets.[9][15][16]

On June 26, 2199,[17] Yamato battled against Desler's forces over Garmillas, seemingly killing the Supreme Leader and causing the final collapse of his administration.[18] In his place, Vice Leader Redof Hiss took control of a provisional government and pardoned Ditz, making him commander of the Astro Fleet again.[2][19] The reinstated Admiral sent out a stand-down order to all garmillan fleets, urging them to return to planet Garmillas, certain formations refused to recognize the new government and continued their activity, so Ditz deployed the dimensional submarine UX-01 to hunt them down.[19]

Reconstruction, Gatlantis and the Civil War[]

The Garmillas Provisional Government outlawed many of the most authoritarian aspects of the Desler regime but couldn't diminish the size of the military. This was mainly due to the still-existing threat of the Gatlantis Empire, which loomed over the empire's borders in the Small Magellanic Cloud.[3][20] Following the end of the conflict with the Earth, the Garmillas Empire signed a mutual security agreement with the Earth Federation, effectively creating a military alliance between the two powers.[17][21] The treaty was called into action in December of 2202[17] when the empire and the Earth led a joint naval operation to recapture the 8th Floating Continent, which had been occupied by Gatlantis two months prior.[22] The bulk of the Astro Fleet's forces was later deployed to the Solar system in 2203 to protect the Earth from a Gatlantean invasion.[23]

Apart from Gatlantis, the internal security of the empire was also unstable, various terror organizations with different ideologies ran rampant within Garmillas's borders, and a vast chunk of its naval forces, both from the Astro Fleet and the Imperial Guard, had gone AWOL following Desler's fall.[24][25][26] These formations later fell under the command of Desler himself, who had secretly survived his apparent death years prior.[25] In 2203, Desler contacted the central government and revealed that planet Garmillas was reaching the end of its planetary life and would collapse in only a few decades. The internal conflict between the Leader's forces and the empire's own was halted, and the two sides began cooperating to find a new home planet for their species.[27][28]

In the wake of its new alliance with Desler, the Astro Fleet began sending multiple exploratory fleets throughout the universe to find a new world that could be inhabited by the Garmillans. Part of the Astro Fleet forces and officers were given to a reorganized Desler fleet, which collaborated with the new government in their exploratory mission.[28][29] Eventually, in 2205,[28] the existence of planet Garmann, the ancestral home planet of the Garmillas race, was leaked to the Desler fleet.[30] However, the planet had fallen under occupation by an interstellar power known as the Bolar Federation.[29]

As Desler tried to negotiate with the federation's leadership, plans to seize the world by force were drafted. Eventually, negotiations between the Supreme Leader and the Garmann Governor-general broke down, and the Desler fleet expelled the enemy occupation and liberated the planet. Admiral Ditz's personal fleet took control of Garmann while Desler moved out to assist the Immigration fleet.[28][29]

In a surprising turn, a previously unknown alien faction, Dezariam, attacked and destroyed planet Garmillas. With most of the Astro Fleet away from the home planet, the Desler fleet stood alone in the fight against the new enemy. The Earth Federation hesitated to send help out of fear of being caught in a war between Garmillas and Bolar. However, the 65th Escort Corps, headed by Yamato, refused to stand down and rushed to help Desler's forces in the conflict against Dezariam.[31][32][33]

Following the Iscandar Incident, Desler and his remaining forces headed to Galman.[34] There, in 2206,[4] the Garmillas Empire's successor state, Galman-Garmillas was founded. All Garmillan fleet forces were called to the new home planet in the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, although not all assets managed to reach it. This led to the foundation of the Galman-Garmillas Forces[35] and its navy, the Galman-Garmillas Astro Fleet.[36]
