The Galactic Area Army was a Greater Garmillan Empire area army active in the Galactic Theater of the Great Garmillas War. It was headquartered at the Balun Military Base and was under the command of the Galactic Theater Operation Commander. Major General Gremdt Goer originally served as commander of the Galactic Area Army but was replaced in mid 2199 for his failure at stopping the advance of the Earthling battleship Yamato. In his place, Colonel General Elk Domel took office as Galactic Theater Operation Commander until the fall of the Balun MIlitary Base in May of the same year.
History[]
The Galactic Area Army was created sometime before 2199 and was the primary garmillan force during the Great Garmillas War. It was stationed in the Galactic Theater, and its headquarters were at the Balun Military Base. It was led by Major General Gremdt Goer, who gained the position under recommendation from Imperial Marshall Herm Zoellik of the Central Army.[5][4][6]

Yamato destroys the Pluto Frontline Base
For most of the conflict, the Teron Attack Force, an armored space brigade[9] of second-class soldiers, was the main force deployed by Garmillas. It terraformed the dwarf planet Pluto and established a base from which it bombed the Earth using planet bombs. Despite losing to the United Nations Cosmo Force in February of 2198, the garmillan forces continued to have the upper hand for most of the conflict.[10] However, in February of 2199,[10] the advanced Earthling battleship Yamato, capable of traveling at faster-than-light speeds, destroyed the Pluto base and most of the Teron Attack Force. These events led to Supreme Leader Abelt Desler gaining interest in the campaign and planning an operation against the battleship himself. Following the failure of the Leader's operation, Zoellik contacted Goer and intimated him to hunt down the Yamato himself, fearing the Major General's incompetence could stain his reputation.[4][3][11][12]

General Domel became the commander of the Galactic Area Army in Goer's place
However, Goer's hunt proved unsuccessful, causing Desler to remove Goer from his position. In his place, the dictator chose Lt. General Elk Domel, a famous Astro Fleet commander, to serve as Galactic Theater Operation Commander, and he promoted him to Colonel General. Domel took command of the Balun base, and Goer was demoted to Deputy commander. Domel managed to secure the experimental dimensional submarine UX-01 under his command thanks to Admiral Gul Ditz and ordered it to lead an ambush on the Earthling battleship. Secretary of Propaganda Miezela Celestella also tried to capture Yamato herself, but both attempts failed.[4][6][13][14]

Yamato under heavy fire by Domel's forces
Following two failures, Domel decided to ambush the battleship himself. For days the Galactic Area Army forces led a series of offensive recon missions to exhaust Yamato's crew. Then once the ship found itself in a vulnerable position, he decided to strike using the bulk of the area army, including his personal fleet. The battle was initially a success, and the Earthlings were cornered. However, an emergency transmission from Garmillas forced Domel to immediately retreat.[15]

Zoellik is shot by Goer
Eternal Supreme Leader Desler had been assassinated while en route to Balun, and Domel, being one of the only people aware of the Leader's movement, was one of the primary suspects. With him and his staff away for trial, Goer once again assumed de facto command of the Balun base. On May 14, 2199,[10] Zoellik organized a massive naval review on Balun. In reality, the review was simply an excuse to gather the bulk of the empire's navy in a single place to incite them to rise against the central government. Zoellik and his faction had assassinated Desler and blamed their enemies within the military. This way, nobody stood between the Imperial Marshall and the throne of the empire. However, unbeknownst to Zoellik, Desler was still alive, and Domel's arrest had been just a rouse. The Supreme Leader hijacked Zoellik's communication system, interrupting his speech and publicly revealing his treachery. Goer executed the traitor on the spot.[1][15]
As these events unfolded, Yamato led a surprise attack at the Balun base, destroying the artificial planet's core before making its escape through the Large Magellanic Cloud subspace gate. The massive fleet of over 10,000 ships was caught in the planet's explosion, and about 7,000 ships were lost. Now cut off from the empire's home planet due to the subspace gate's destruction, and with the battlefield between Yamato and Garmillas moving from the Milky Way to the Magellanic Cloud, the Galactic Area Army effectively ceased to exist.[1]

Goer's fleet meets up with Desler in exile
Goer took command of the remaining fleet and began a months-long journey back to the imperial capital. However, before he could reach the planet Desler's regime was dethroned, and the Supreme Leader seemingly died in battle. The fleet split up, some deciding to follow Zoellik's remaining forces and others siding with the new provisional government. Goer took command of 30 ships from his personal fleet and tried to meet up with the secretly still alive Desler.[16][17][18]
