- For information on the floating continent in the original Space Battleship Yamato, see Floating Continent (OS).
A floating continent is a landmass that was originally part of the planet Garmillas cut from its crust and transported outside the planet's home system by the Great Garmillas Empire to support "Garmillasforming" operations in other systems. Whole forests on the upper surface of a floating continent are preserved, making them into storehouses of native life used by the empire to seed other worlds and transform them into more Garmillas-like places.[1]
Known Floating continents[]
Jupiter Floating continent[]
During its war with Earth, the Great Garmillas Empire suspended a floating continent in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant Jupiter. The Australia-sized object and the verdant plant life on its surface were protected from Jupiter's lethal natural conditions; calm winds, lighter air pressure, and temperatures warm enough for bodies of liquid water were maintained, although the continent's atmospheric content (67 percent methane, 21 percent carbon dioxide, and 6 percent nitrogen, along with acetaldehyde and ethanol) differed sharply from the air of Garmillas. Operations were managed from a small, lightly defended resupply base located deep in the continent's interior. In early 2199, the Earth battleship Yamato discovered this floating continent hidden beneath Jupiter's cloud tops. Yamato navigated through the levitated rocky debris surrounding the continent and came to rest in a small lake. The crew collected plant samples, matched their DNA with alien plants that had invaded Earth in recent years, and correctly determined the purpose of the floating continent. The continent was completely vaporized soon thereafter in the first firing of Yamato's wave motion gun.[2]
Eighth Floating continent[]
The 8th Floating Continent, also known as 8th Gamirasia,[3] was located inside the atmosphere of another gas giant in the Milky Way Galaxy. It was one of seven floating continents occupied by the Gatlantis Empire in 2202.[3] A base was located on the continent. It was seized and heavily mined by the Gatlanteans. Space above the planet and the remains of the continent became the site of a major counter-offensive by allied Garmillas and Earth fleets. The weaponry of the allied ships resulted in the continent's ultimate destruction.[4]
Notes[]
- A computer display aboard Yamato gives the Jupiter floating continent's surface area as 7,802,320 square kilometers, along with other statistics.
