The Escort Ship is a frigate class of the United Nations Cosmo Navy. Twenty[2] ships of this class were part of the Enceladus Defense Unit and hundreds more participated in the Battle of Saturn under the command of captain Osamu Yamanami as part of the Yamanami Fleet during the Gatlantis Campaign.
Armament and Technical Specifications[]
The Escort Ship is a small frigate with high maneuverability. The hull structure of the Escort Ship can be considered a downsizing of the simultaneously developed Patrol Ship. Although its unclear which of the two classes was designed first, it's thought that one design was derived from the other to improve productivity.[2] The bridge is located slightly aft of the top of the cylindrical hull, and the main guns and main propulsion engine are installed at the front and tail, respectively.[1][3]
It's equipped with MK.33 3-inches turrets, torpedo launchers, and a small wave-motion gun mounted on the bow.[1][2]
It's crewed by 6 officers and 38 sailors.[1]

Originally, the new wave motion-gun equipped fleet of the UNCN was planned to consist only of D-class Vanguard Starships, but as the fleet expanded and the Gatlantean threat increased in severity,[2] the Escort Ship was developed as a DWIE ship that was simple to build and could be manufactured in higher numbers in mass production.[1]
The class first saw action at the Battle of Saturn on May 2203, but the 20 ships deployed as part of the Enceladus Defense Unit were unable to make use of their mobility due to the high-gravity environment of Saturn. The class continued to serve for the entirity of Gatlantis's invasion of the Solar system.[2] Many Escort Ships remained behind at the emergency drydock on Mars in late May and a number of them survived the war in its entirety. At least three Escort Ships were involved in the reconstruction effort of the Earth Federation Capital in December 2203. The remaining vessels of the class were still in service as late as October 2205.[3][4][5][6]
