This article is about the Earth Federation Defense Force from Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and its sequels. The Earth Federation Defense Force, shortened Earth Defense Force (EDF)[6] or, more rarely, Earth Federation Forces,[7] is the armed forces of the Earth Federation and one of the major military powers in the Milky Way Galaxy. It was founded as the military arm of the United Nations under the name of United Nations Forces (U.N.F.),[8] or United Nations Joint Forces.[1]
Organization[]
The Earth Federation Defense Force wa created as the military branch of the United Nations and, following the UN's dissolution, it became the Earth Federation's armed forces.[1][9][5]
In 2199 Kotetsu Serizawa served as the Director of the Military Affairs Bureau of the Far-East District
It's organized into four service branches: Earth Federation Army, the United Nations Navy, the Earth Federation Air Force, and the Earth Federation Cosmo Force, outside of them, they also operate the intelligence department. As of 2198, regular police forces also fell under the purview of the military.[1][10] During the Great Garmillas War, all branches outside of the Cosmo Force were almost entirely wiped out by the ongoing siege of Earth, passing the role of air and ground defense to the Cosmo Force's Space Defense Command.[1]
The Earth Defense Force operates the Accounting Bureau, responsible for distributing the supplies gathered by the Cosmo Force Transport Fleet,[11] and the Military Affairs Bureau. Each UN district had its own regional Military Affairs Bureau. Following the founding of the Earth Federation the various operative districts, such as the Pacific Area and the Far East[8] continued to exist, each headed by a conductor who coordinated the area's military operations. By 2201, Lt. General Thomas L. Clark served as Pacific area conductor.[1][10][12]
The Earth Defense Force is are presided over by the General Staff office[8] and Earth Federation Defense Command, located at Earth HQ, serves as its highest command. By 2202, the force is headed by a General Commanding Director, assisted by a deputy. These positions are currently held by General Heikuro Todo and General Kotetsu Serizawa.[3]

The U.N.F. were created as the military of the United Nations and operated both ground, naval and air forces, and, at least after the inner planetary wars, space based forces, including the UNCN and UNCM.[1] Not much is known about the UN Joint Forces before the Great Garmillas War, it is known however that before the conflict the UNCN played a rather minor role in the overall organisation, but rose to prominence due to the space faring nature of the invading enemy. During the conflict the traditional forces were completely wiped out leaving only the Cosmo Force to oppose Garmillas.[1][9]

Following the end of the conflict the Joint Forces fell under the control of the newly created Earth Federation as the UN began to transition into a unified planetary government. Heikuro Todo, former Chief Administrator of the Far-East District, was named General Commanding Director with General Kotetsu Serizawa as his deputy. Following this transition, the U.N.F. began being referred to as the Earth Federation Defense Force, but its name wouldn't change officially for years.[5][3][13][14] In February of 2201, the General Staff office agreed to finance Professor Robert Redrowz's investigation of the Archelias civilization ruins present on Planet Stravase.[8] Around 2202, most military-related prodiction bases began transferring to large factory areas built near the New Capital, and many previously established facilities, such as those in the Bōsō District industrial zone, were sold to private companies.[11]
By 2205, the transition process had been completed, and all branches changed their name to fit the change of regime.[14] The United Nations Forces officially changed their name to Earth Federation Defense Force.[15]
In 2205, the Cosmo Navy's 65th Escort Corps was sent on a diplomatic mission to the planets Garmillas and Iscandar. However, while the fleet was en route, Garmillas was destroyed by an unknown enemy, later identified as the mysterious alien faction Dezariam. The Earth Defense Force's HQ forbade the fleet to intervene and aid the Garmillans, fearing it would lead to a new intergalactic war. Despite these orders, the fleet ignored them and attempted to aid the Garmillans. As a result, the Earth Defense Force disbanded the fleet upon its return to Earth.[16]
However, this move by Director Todo was secretly made in preparation of a forthcoming Dezarian invasion. A group of Dezariam sympathizers, led by Todo's own sister and Director of the Intelligence Department Shino Todo, began infiltrating the EDF, forcing the Commander-in-Chief to work in secret, planning the secret operation codenamed "Operation DAD". When Dezariam launched the Dezariam Invasion of Earth in 2207, landing the space fortress Grand Reverse right outside of the New Capital and taking over it and planet Earth, Todo launched Operation DAD. However, his sister's forces stormed headquarters and deposed him and Serizawa in a coup.[17][18]
