The Earth Federation Cosmo Navy (EFCN), originally known as United Nations Cosmo Navy (UNCN) or U.N.C.F Cosmo Navy,[8] is the space navy branch of the Earth Federation Cosmo Force, the space-based military of the United Nations and later of the Earth Federation. The Cosmo Navy has jurisdiction over all military spacecraft operations defending Earth and interests inside and outside Earth's solar system.
Organization[]
The Cosmo Navy comprises part of the Earth Federation Cosmo Force along with the Earth Federation Cosmo Marines. Starship combat and transit across space fall within the purview of the EFCN. The Cosmo Navy is led by a Commander-in-Chief (later changed to Supreme Commander)[9][N 1]; the position was filled by Admiral Juzo Okita in 2199, and by Captain Osamu Yamanami by 2205.[5][6]
The separate nations originally making up the United Nations maintained the space fleets that formed the Cosmo Navy; Japan was a major contributor, with warships having been based at a spaceport near Mount Fuji. At least since a major reorganization in 2192, all UNCN fleets fall under the Combined Cosmo Fleet, the main field arm of the Cosmo Navy, headed by Fleet Command and its commander. By 2198 the position was held by Admiral Juzo Okita. The Cosmo Navy also operates the Cosmo Navy Land Squadron, the 7th Air Wing , and the 101st Airborne Corps.[2][4][10][11][12] Even after the beginning of the transition of power from the various nations of the UN to the Earth Federation, the various space militaries of Earth's nations continued to make up the forces of the Combined Cosmo Fleet.[13] It's unclear if that is still the case after the complete transition of power between the national governments of Earth to the united federal government. In late 2202, the Combined Cosmo Fleet was reorganized into the Earth Federation Cosmo Fleet and began fielding Wave-motion Gun-equipped warships in defiance of the Earth Iscandar Treaty of Amity and Garmillas-Earth Interim Agreement.[7][14]
After the Gatlantis Campaign, the Cosmo Navy's assets were substantially reduced by the new military policy of the Earth. Once the transition process between the UN and the Earth Federation was completed, the organization was renamed from United Nations Cosmo Navy to Earth Federation Cosmo Navy.[15][16][17] By 2205, the EFCN operates the Cosmo Navy 7th Base in the vicinity of Space Defense Academy Headquarters.[18]
History[]
The Martian rebellion and founding[]
For this topic in more detail, see Inner Planetary Wars
Sometime in the first half of the 22nd century, the atmosphere of Mars changed drastically in its composition, leading to the first successful colonization attempt of the red planet[1]. At some point, the Martian Autonomous Government discovered that the change had been caused by an alien warship's terraforming device, wInhich had crashlanded on the planet and automatically activated to make the barren world habitable. After its discovery, the alien vehicle was studied in secret, and by reverse engineering the ship's technology, Mars acquired enough knowledge to build the first-ever Terran space fleet and declare its independence from Earth.[1]
The UN forces were at an enormous disadvantage against the Martian Autonomous Government Space Navy. Following the end of the First Inner Planetary War and in preparation for a new conflict, the United Nations created its own space naval branch, the United Nations Cosmo Navy.[19] The first ship classes to enter service were the Murasame-class Space Cruiser in 2170; and the Kongo-class Space Battleship in 2171.[1]
The Martian struggle for independence would lead to the First and Second inner planetary wars, which would only end in 2183[1]. The conflicts left the surface of Mars entirely abandoned, with all Martian survivors being forced to emigrate back to Earth.[2][20] Following the end of the wars, the UNCF as a whole lost its importance, and began playing a lesser role in the overall United Nations Joint Forces.[4]
The Great Garmillas War[]
For this topic in more detail, see Great Garmillas War
First Contact with Garmillas[]
April 1, 2191. The Uranus Surveillance Station detected a series of alien ships from the Great Garmillas Empire entering the solar system. The UNCF deployed in the Japanese fleet, under the command of Admiral Juzo Okita, and the Inner Planetary Defense Fleet to intercept them. The two sides met in Pluto's orbit. As soon as the two forces met, the UN Space Defense Committee ordered Okita to open fire on the aliens, considering them invaders; however, the admiral refused to follow the order, suggesting not to be hasty. His insubordination prompted General Serizawa to relieve him from his post.[10][1] The first Earth ship to fire against the aliens was the Murasame commandeered by Captain Shima Daigo. The Garmillas ships immediately retaliated, destroying 80% of the Earth fleet with their counterattack.[10]
This was the standard Garmillas tactic at the time, to put pressure on their enemy to make them attack first and only then launch an invasion once they had justification to do so.[1]
War with Garmillas[]
The Garmillas forces established a base on Pluto from which they coordinated the invasion of the solar system. The UNCN was reorganized and launched a massive counteroffensive, using the asteroid belt as an absolute defense line. This prompted the invaders to start bombing Earth with planet bombs, the first of which fell on April 2, 2192, on Japan.[1] The ongoing siege of Earth obliterated the joint forces' army, naval, and air capability. Combined with the interstellar nature of the enemy Great Garmillas Empire, the Cosmo Navy's role within the UN Joint Forces' structure rose once again to a position of the highest importance.[4]
In the year 2198, after seven years of war and six years of non-stop bombing, the UN decided to unleash all of its remaining fleet power in a decisive battle off the coast of Mars. Operation K2, also known as the Second Battle of Mars, was led by Admiral Okita. The fleet that fought in the battle consisted of ships from various nations of Earth.[2][1] The battle marked the debut of shock cannons, which would later become standard weaponry for all UNCN ships.[1] The operation was a success for the UN, pushing the invaders out of the inner solar system. It raised morale among the people of Earth despite its significant cost, demonstrating that victory over their adversary was not impossible. The battle also elevated the reputation of Admiral Okita, to the jealous irritation of General Serizawa; the General's view of the Admiral would be tainted for years afterward.[2]
Help from Iscandar[]
Sometime between 2192 and 2198, Queen Stasha of Iscandar discovered the Garmillas bombings of Earth. She sent her sister, Princess Yurisha, to give the Earthlings the plans for a wave motion engine, which would have allowed an Earth vessel to reach Planet Iscandar and obtain the Cosmo Reverse System, a device capable of restoring Earth's biosphere ruined by Garmillas's planet bombs.[21][22]
Yurisha reached Earth with the plans in 2198 and established formal relations between her home planet and the United Nations. After her arrival, she was assigned Ensign Yuki Mori as her aide. With the information they had been given by Yurisha, the UNCN started working on the ambitious Program Yamato. However, before the princess could reveal the complete route for Iscandar, she fell victim to a possible terrorist bombing, which sent her into a coma and caused Mori to suffer from amnesia..[23][24][25]
Operation M[]
The arrival of Iscandar's second princess, Sasha, carrying the wave motion core, a component necessary to activate the Wave Motion engine, was scheduled for January 17, 2199.[1] The UN Cosmo Navy devised Operation M to distract the Garmillas forces long enough for the princess to reach Mars, where a two-person team would retrieve the package.[2] The operation was led by Okita and resulted in the near destruction of the entirity of the UNCN First Fleet. Despite the UNCN's effort, Sasha's ship, Sheherazade, faced engine malfunction while entering Mars' atmosphere, leading to the death of its pilot. Thankfully the extraction team managed to retrieve the wave motion core, and the operation was declared a success.[2]
Yamato takes off[]
In the aftermath of Operation M, Colonel Valcke Schulz, the commanding officer of the Garmillas base on Pluto, sent a Pormelia-class Astro Assault Carrier to destroy an underground facility where they had detected suspicious activity.[26] The facility was a hidden drydock containing the space battleship originally built for Project Izumo, and later equipped with the wave motion engine: BBY-01 Yamato. The ship, which had been camouflaged with the wreck of her eponymous 20th-century counterpart, rapidly destroyed the enemy craft prompting Schulz to send an interplanetary missile to Earth[21]
A few days after the attack, Admiral Okita, who had been chosen to command Yamato, publicly announced the project by showing a video message sent by Stasha, which had been recovered together with the wave motion core. He also declared the ship would take off on February 11.[1] Before the time of departure, however, the Garmillas missile from Pluto entered the Earth's atmosphere, threatening to destroy humanity's last hope. In a surprising turn of events, all the remaining UN blocks sent energy to the Far East district and the Yamato. Suddenly able to start her engine at full power, the ship took down the interplanetary missle and immediately took off, turning the helm toward Iscandar.[21]
In the following days, the Yamato destroyed the garmillas base during the Operation M2, causing the bombings on Earth to end once and for all.[27]
Voyage to Iscandar[]
During her one year journey towards Iscandar, Yamato faced off against garmillas forces various times, eventually learning the planet's true nature as Iscandar's twin star.[24][28][29][30] Eventually the ship battled against Supreme Leader Abelt Desler, Garmillas's dictator, during the Battle of the Imperial Capital, seemingly killing him.[31] A few days after the battle, on July 17 2199,[1] Yamato arrived on Iscandar, and landed in its Imperial Capital Isk San Aria. After a day of stalling, Queen Stasha agreed on gifting the Earth with the Cosmo Reverse, and signed an armistice together with Vice Leader Redof Hiss of Garmillas, head of the new garmillan interim government, and Admiral Juzo Okita, which effectively put an end to the Great Garmillas War and banned wave motion weaponry.[14][32]
After completely recieving the CRS, the ship left the planet and started its 168,000 light years journey towards Earth.[32] During the journey back home the battleship was caught in the gatlantean Governor-general Goran Dagam's Hunt for the World of Tranquillity. During the conflict Yamato allied itself with the garmillan Eighth Security Fleet in what would be the first hostile enounter between the UNCN and the Gatlantis Empire.[11]
Finally, after 300 days of traveling, Yamato arrives on Earth on December 8, 2199,[33] bringing the CRS with her, and restoring the ravaged planet to its original blue self.[34]
Post-war reconstruction and rearmament[]
Following the end of the Garmillas War the Earth entered a period of reconstruction and reorganization.[35] The United Nations was replaced by the Earth Federation, and a transition process was started to transfer power between the various national governments of the Earth into a single, unified planetary administration.[36] The Cosmo Navy, together with the rest of the United Nations Joint Forces, fell under the jurisdiction of the newly created federation.[7][14]
By 2201,[37] the recovered Earth had already rebuilt and vastly improved upon its decimated space fleets. It first mass-produced and updated its older cruiser, destroyer, and battleship designs with wave motion engines, warp capability, and other modernized systems.[13] The same year,[38] the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan was announced, and a new generation of vessels equipped with wave motion guns quickly followed. These new classes of ships advanced many features that had been introduced on Yamato's voyage three years earlier. The construction of wave-motion weaponry went against a clause in the armistice signed by Hiss and Okita, however the leadership of the Earth Federation denied the validity of the treaty itself, which had been signed by the commanding officer of Yamato and not by any rapresentative of the Earth's nations.[39] Due to his open opposition the project, Admiral Hijikata, one of the senior most UNCN officers, was relieved of his duties as Commander-in-Chief of Space Defense Command by the Cosmo Force and was exiled to the outer solar system as commander of the Outer Defense Division.[14][40]
By setting up ship manufacturing facilities inside a hidden zone of time distortion accidentally created by the CRS, the Cosmo Navy was able to amass decades worth of warships in only a few years. In addition, the Earth Federation signed a treaty of mutual defense with the Great Garmillas Empire, creating a de-facto military alliance, and in exchange for access to the time fault's shipyards, Garmillas granted the Earth some of its colonies.[14][1]
Andromeda's debut and Teresa[]
On December 2, 2202,[1] the UNCN Special Hybrid Fleet participated in the 8th Floating Continent Recapture Operation, a joint operation with the Garmillas Empire to retake the Eighth Floating Continent, which had been taken over by the Gatlantis Empire. At the end of the battle a gatlantean Calaklum-class managed to trace two earthling ships warp signature and followed them back to Earth where itmade a suicide run against the Earth Federation Capital. However, thanks to the effort of its former crew, space battleship Yamato was reactivated in time to stop the enemy dreadnought.[7]
During the battle the UNCF leadership activated Plan A, the secret directive allowing the usage of the DWIE-equipped Andromeda, the new general flagship of the UNCN. Four other ships of her class were later christened during a formal cerimony on December 8.[7][14][1]
The day of the battle the former crew of Yamato recieved a message from Teresa of Terezart, an ancient goddess who called them to their planet. Once he found out about the call, the Garmillas Ambassador Loren Burrell contacted Lieutenant Susumu Kodai, the former tactics officer of the battleship. He informed Kodai of the many legends surrounding Terezart and the goddess, who had been guiding the various human species for thousands of years. Kodai was also informed of the existence of the time fault by Burrell's military attachée. With this newfound information, the Lieutenant formally asked General Commanding Director Todo to send the Yamato on an expedition toward Terezart. Once Todo opposed this proposition, he reunited the battleship's former crewmembers still on Earth and prepared to launch clandestinely. Kodai was also named acting commander for the expedition instead of Executive Officer Shiro Sanada.[14][39][41]
When the crew's real intentions became clear, the UNCF sent the Emergency Deployment Unit to take control of the underwater drydock where Yamato was undergoing renovations. However, the battleship had been secretly moved to the abandoned underground city underneath the drydock. Despite Todo's ultimatum, the ship took off, destroyed a defense satellite, and was quickly joined in their revolt by the Yamamoto Team, an air unit of the Lunar Air Corps made out of former Yamato aviators.[41][42]
Andromeda, under the command of Captain Osamu Yamanami, the new commander of the Earth Federation Defense Fleet,[43] was launched to pursue the rebelling battleship, and the two clashed at the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. The skirmish was interrupted by a video message from Todo and the UNCF leaders on behalf of the Earth Federation President. Thanks to Burrell's meddling, Yamato's journey had been approved by the federal government, and all those participating in it were now free of all charges.[41][42]
The Gatlantis Campaign[]
For this topic in more detail, see Gatlantis Campaign
Voyage to Terezart[]
By tracing Teresa's message, Gatlantis was able to find out the location of the Solar System and sent 8th Mobile Fleet to attack the system's 11th planet. The initial attack decimated the population and the command structure of the Outer Defense Division as well as hindering the colony's communication capabilities, cutting it out from the Earth.[14]
After rescuing a cosmo marine who was escaping from the battlefield to call for help, Yamato moved to carry out a rescue operation on the planet against the wishes of Earth Defense Force Headquarters, which wished to wait for agreement from Garmillas before starting an operation. In the subsequent battle, Gatlantis amassed an enormous fleet counting in the millions of ships and tried to assemble a superweapon that could've destroyed the Sun. Despite this, Yamato debilitated the invading fleet and fled the planet with the survivors on board, including Admiral Hijikata and the cosmo marines of the 7th Space Cavalry Regiment.[14][44][45]
Yamato encountered Gatlantis once again 4 days later at the planet Stravase, where it was caught in a three-way battle between a Garmillan terror group and a series of reanimated corpses that had been planted by the Gatlantean Emperor, Zworder. The battleship would go on to liberate planet Terezart from both Gatlantis and the forces of the fallen Garmillas Supreme Leader Abelt Desler. During the mission to free the planet, Hijikata was named captain of Yamato.[46][47][48][49][50]
War comes to the Solar System[]
In May on 2203, Gatlantis began carrying out small hit and run attacks against the UNCN Peripheral Fleet on Pluto, Neptune and the Asteroid belt.[1][51] The UNCF believed these were diversions in preparation for a full-scale war. In addition, thanks to data retrieved by Yamato during its journey, the Earth leadership understood that the White Comet, an object of Jovian scale capable of warping, was actually the empire's mobile capital and was heading straight to Earth.[51]
To prepare for the coming invasion the UNCN stationed its fleet throughout the Solar system. Yamanami's Andromeda Fleet waited around the orbit of the Moon, the Ginga Fleet was deployed near Jupiter, and the Enceladus Defense Unit remained stationed around the orbit of Saturn. In addition, an allied Garmillan fleet was stationed around Mars. As the Cosmo Navy prepared for war, Project G, a project for the evacuation of the Earth, was drafted. It was to be activated in case the war took a turn for the worst.[1][51] On May 8,[52] Gatlantis's Seventh mobile fleet attacked Saturn and engaged in full combat with the Enceladus Defense Unit. The Andromeda Fleet immidiately warped to the battlefield and the E.F.G. Congress offically declared war against Gatlantis. The battle was initially a stalemate until the White Comet arrived on Saturn. Unleashing its supergravity, the Comet made the Earth fleet break formation resulting in heavy losses, including the Andromeda-class Apollo Norm, and causing heavy damage to the flagship Andromeda. Even Yamato's plan to use a new more powerfull variant of the Wave-motion Gun failed due to a sabotage carried out by a gatlantean spy, and the battleship fell into the White Comet's gravity field, it was May 9,[53] 2203.[54][55]
Following the devastation at Saturn, the remmaining forces of the Andromeda and Enceladus fleets joined the Ginga Fleet and the Garmillas fleet and, through a series of Walls of Garmillas Subject, they temporaarily halted Gatlantis's advance. Ginga, flagship of the Ginga fleet and the cruiser designated to carry out Plan G, became the center point of the Earth Federation's attack and defense. A new generation vessel, the ship was effectively under the control of its command AI, with the crew's function being reduced to merely approving the computer's decision. This was the culmination of the UNCF's plans for ship mass production. Gatlantis eventually broke the anti-warp field and the comet moved into the Mars area, where an ultimate line of defense was established.[56][57]
With the overall losses within the Garmillas-Earth joint forces reaching 50% of their overall strength, Ginga's AI commenced Project G and the ship retreatreated from the frontlines. At the same time, the repaired Andromeda under Captain Osamu Yamanami carried out a last desperate attack against the imperial capital with a fleet of automated Andromeda-class variants. Yamanami managed to spot Yamato, which was trying to flee the White Comet's gravity field after finding out critical information on how to stop Gatlantis's advance. Andromeda was joined by Ginga, which had refused to execute Project G and together the two warships rescued Yamato by damaging the Comet's gravitational core.[58]
Having breached the Mars line of defense, on June 2, Gatlantis reached the Earth and declared global dominance. With all remaining UNCN forces undergoing repairs in an emergency drydock set up on Mars, the Earth Federation was forced to relay entirely on the Garmillan navy and Yamato in the last battle of the war. Yamato stormed Emperor Zworder's throne room, where they had discovered the existance of Golem, a device that could instantly kill all Gatlanteans. In a surprising turn of events, Zworder, knowing he would survive Golem, activated the device himself and fully awakened the White Comet to its true form as the Archelian Ark of Destruction. The Ark first fired at the Moon, partially dedstroying it, then prepared to fire another shot to annhilate the Earth. Yamato, helmed solely by Kodai and his fiancée, Lt. Yuki Mori, made a suicide runagainst the Ark, hoping to buy enough time for the Earth's citiens to evacuate; however, with aid from Teresa herself, the battleship completely destroyed the Ark of Destruction, ending the Gatlantis Campaign.[59][60]
The referendum and the Fourth Defense Plan[]
Following the end of the war with Gatlantis, construction of DWIE-equipped vessels continued. 6 months after, Yamato somehow reappeared in the time fault, aboard it carried Ensign Akira Yamamoto. According to her, the battleship had been transported to Teresa's dimension following its final attack, with it were Mori and Kodai who were still stuck in the other realm. To save them, a delegation composed of Sanada, Yamanami, Yamamoto and Ginga's commander proposed a mission to save the two, however, to get the energy necessary to send a vessel in Teresa's dimension, the time fault would need to be sacrificed. Thanks once again to Burrell's political pressure, the Earth Federation agreed on a referendum over whether to go through with the time fault's sacrifice. The referendum was held on December 30,[61] Sanada and General Serizawa of the UNCF served as speakers of their respective factions, but ultimately even Serizawa voted in favour of the proposal.[62] The same day, Yamato was sent into Teresa's world and retrieved the two officers, returning on December 31.[1][63]
In the following year, the Cosmo Force was reorganized and changed its policy to the optimization of military assets to match the scale of the Earth under the principles of the Fourth Defense Plan.[6][64] Unfinished Dreadnought-class Vanguard Starships were converted into new designs under the Multifunctional Cosmposite Standard Battleship Plan, and others were modified to serve as part of the growing Transport Fleet, but were later granted to Garmillas to serve as part of their Immigration Plan.[15][65] Another design ship development project, the Multipurpose Transport Boat Plan, used to develop the Air Force's Type 5 Medium Transport Boat, was also used as the basis of the Cosmo Hound, the Earth Federation's first dimensional submarine that was to be completed in 2205 in a technological exchange with the Garmillas Empire.[16][66] By 2205 the transition between the Earth's national governments and the federation was completed, leading to the Cosmo Navy being officially renamed Earth Federation Cosmo Navy (EFCN).[16][28][36]
Yamanami was officially named Supreme Commander of the EFCN and was offered a promotion to Admiral. However, he refused as he blamed himself for the Cosmo Navy's actions during the Gatlantis Campaign. Instead, he resigned as Commander of the Earth Federation Defense Fleet and decided to concentrate his efforts on training human resources.[6][43]
The Bolar Federation and Dezariam[]
The Peace Corps and the 65th Escort Corps[]
For this topic in more detail, see Iscandar Incident
In 2205, tension between the Great Garmillas Empire and an interstellar power known as the Bolar Federation began to rise. Garmillas wanted control of the Bolar-occupied world Garmann, which was the only known planet with an habitat capable of sustaining long-term Garmillas colonisation. Fearing the situation may escalate into a full-blown conflict, in which the Earth would uninevitably be involved due to its vicinity with Bolar's borders, the Earth Federation decided to launch a diplomatic mission to Iscandar and Garmillas, hoping to showcase its new peacefull foreign policy. Yamato and its new fleet, the 65th Escort Corps under Yamanami, were chosen to escort this mission, and were launched on October 2.[16][36]
Unexpectedly, planet Garmillas fell under an attack from a previously unknown faction, Dezariam, which used its superior technology to destroy the planet. Once the news reached the Yamato, the diplomatic mission was cancelled and the battleship was forbid to send help to Garmillas out of fear of Bolar being behind the attack. However, the younger crewmembers aboard Yamato rebelled and personally expelled the delegation members from the battleship with Kodai's approval, now the ship's captain.[67][68]
During what became known as the Iscandar Incident, the joint force of the 65th Escort Corps and the Desler fleet, a formation loyal to the deposed Supreme Leader Abelt Desler, managed to protect the surviving ships of the Garmillas Immigration Fleet, leading to the salvation of about 100,000 Garmillan citizens. The Dezarian forces were defeated but it came at the cost of the sacrifice of Planet Iscandar, which was self-destructed by Queen Stasha to destroy the enemy fleet. This act cost the lives of the monarch and her sister Yurisha.[68][69][70][71][72]
Preparing a covert defense[]
Following the return of the 65th Escort Corps to the Earth, the fleet was dissolved and the ships' personnel was entirely replaced. At General Serizawa's[73] recomandation, the fleet's commanders were held accountable for the revolt and dismissed while all crewmembers were reassigned to new posts.[74] Yamato itself was decorated with a war medal by the Earth government for having been the first Terran ship to face off against three alien opponents, achieve great results, and return safely. This move served to both praise Yamato's accomplishments and retire it from service for good.[75]
The changes that occurred were seen by many as a response to the 65th's actions during the Iscandar Incident. However, behind the scenes, Serizawa and General Commanding Director Todo were planning Operation DAD, a secret defense operation meant to counter a potential Dezariam invasion. Between 2205 and 2207, Dezarim made contact with key military, political, and business figures. Operation DAD was created to prepare a response despite Dezariam sympathizers gaining partial control of the Earth Defense Force from within.[73][76][77][78]
Many veterans who had fought against Dezariam in 2205 were reassigned to the Asuka, which was placed under the command of Commander Seiya Kitano, a former instructor at the Space Defense Academy personally chosen by Director Todo.[79] Concerned about potential infiltration of the Cosmo Navy, Serizawa also assigned Lieutenant Commander Daisuke Shima and other selected personnel to the Earth Federation Air Force to take control of the Limited Autonomous Air Defense System. This unmanned fleet operated on a separate network from the Cosmo Navy and would remain operational even if the Navy was compromised.[77][80] Lastly, Yamato was relocated to a secret location in preparation for its role in the fight against Dezariam.[76]
Additionally, between 2205 and 2207, the Asuka-class Supply Carrier and the Hyuga-class Battleship-Carrier entered mass production.
The Invasion of the Ground Reverse[]
For this topic in more detail, see Invasion of the Ground Reverse
In October 2207, Dezariam initiated its invasion, and Operation DAD was activated by Todo. Despite the best efforts of the various Asuka-class carriers under Commander Kitano and the 28th Escort Corps, including the Hyuga and the Aldebaran, the Dezarian space fortress Ground Reverse managed to break through and land in the New Capital. As expected, the Cosmo Navy's network experienced communication problems caused by a cyberattack from within the military. Due to the influence of Dezariam sympathizers, various formations that would have reacted to stop the invasion refused to intervene. Similarly, conflicting retreat orders and messages were issued to the E.F. Army and the general public.[77][78]
As the Dezariam Army forces took over Earth and stormed Earth HQ, Operation DAD entered a new phase, and the former crews of the 65th Escort Corps were ordered to abandon Earth and gather at the Yamato. However, they were only partially successful as the Hyuga, which was carrying many evacuees, was attacked before it could take off from the planet.[77][78]

Ship classification and registry[]
The Cosmo Navy has used different registry systems for its vessels over the years. Before 2199, the UNCN used a three-letter prefix to identify the ship type, followed by a hyphen and three figures (two for the Yamato class)[21] to indicate the ship's number.[2] Battleships were designated with the prefix "BB," cruisers with "CA," and destroyers with "DD."[N 2] In the case of the Yamato class, the last letter of the prefix was "Y," while all other contemporary classes used "S."[21][86][87][88] All ships, except Yamato, only had the number written on the hull.[2][89]
After the Garmillas War, a new three-part registry style was implemented for all new ships,[13][7] except those belonging to the Yamato class.[90] This new system consisted of the acronym U.N.C.F., followed by the ship's number (using four figures), and then by the ship's launch year.[91] All parts were separated by a hyphen.[7] The Andromeda and Dreadnought classes followed a variation of this system: Andromedas added a three-letter acronym (AAA, BBB, CCC, or ZZZ depending on the type) before the ship's number,[7] while Dreadnoughts added a "D."[42] However, Andromedas' registry are often shortened to the type achronim and the ship number without the zeroes.[92] During the Gatlantis Campaign, with the Dreadnought class and the Patrol Ship and Escort Ship classes entering full mass production, most new ships lacked a proper name, and their registry was composed of a letter identifying their assignment and a two figure number.[13][51] Ships of the Enceladus Defense Unit were marked with the letter "E," while those of the Mars Defense Front were marked with the letter "M."[13][51] The modified Dreadnought Laboratory Prometheus was launched with the unique registry U.N.C.F. LP-0001-2202.[13]
Following the scrapping of the time fault, the Cosmo Navy reverted to the first registry system. New ships of the Asuka and Hyuga classes, as well as newly produced Patrol Ships, have their registry composed of letters identifying their type and the ship's number. The Asuka class uses "DAOE," the Hyuga class uses "DCVA," and Patrol Ships use "PF."[16][93][N 3][N 4] Remaining Andromeda class ships have had their designation changed. It now consists of "AAA" followed by an hyphen and the ship's number (using two figures).[77]
Since the shift to the Earth Federation, Cosmo Navy aircraft carriers are now recognized by the acronym "EFS" (Earth Federation Ship) preceding the ship's name. For example, the fighters of the battle carrier Hyuga display "EFS Hyuga" on the underside of their wings. The registry is rarely utilized as of 2205.[94]
Under the Wave-motion Gun fleet plan, the Andromeda class was identified as an "Armed Vanguard Starship," while the Dreadnought class was identified simply as a "Vanguard Starship." The Patrol and Escort Ships lacked any proper class name.[13][95] Following the approval of the Fourth Defense Plan, the Cosmo Navy reverted to previously used terminology such as "Space Battleship."[15][64] The Cosmo Navy tends to use the terms "Cosmo" or "Space" in favor of the Garmillas-used "Astro" for its ship classes. Additionally, until 2199, in Japanese, the word class for UNCN ships was translated as "型, Gata," while for Garmillan ships, the word "級, Kyū" was used. Since 2202 and the launch of the Andromeda class, "級" has become the standard.[13] Both terms are translated as "Class" in English.[96][97]
Until at least 2202, all ships had their names written in their native language on their hull, with Japanese ships having their names spelled in Hiragana.[2][7] Since at least 2205, ships have their names written both in their native alphabet and in the Latin alphabet.[16]
