Earth Federation Cosmo Marines

The Earth Federation Cosmo Marines (EFCM), formerly known as the United Nations Cosmo Marines (UNCM), is the space cavalry branch of the Earth Federation Cosmo Force, space-based military of the United Nations and later of the Earth Federation. They tend to work in close collaboration with the other EFCF branch, the Cosmo Navy and played a major role in the Great Garmillas War and Gatlantis Campaign.

The Cosmo Marines comprise part of the Earth Federation Cosmo Force along with the Earth Federation Cosmo Navy. They are a space cavalry branch, a type of infantry service specialized for fighting in space or extraterrestrial environments. When in the vacuum of space or on celestial bodies lacking a breathable atmosphere, Cosmo Marines usually fight either using armored spacesuits or mobile armor. Cosmo Marines also provide security services aboard Cosmo Navy vessels, although in specific cases, such as the battleship Yamato, a ship may instead have its own independent security department.[1][5][6][7]

The branch is organized into two main divisions, the Space Cavalry proper, the main army of the Cosmo Marines divided into various regiments, and the Inner Planetary Garrison.[3][8]

While initially part of the United Nations, the Cosmo Marines were later transferred to the jurisdiction of the Earth Federation, together with the rest of the U.N.F., after its founding. With the completion of the transition process between the various national governments of the Earth and the federation between 2204 and January 2205, the United Nations Cosmo Marines (UNCM) officially changed their name to Earth Federation Cosmo Marines (EFCM).[1][9][10]

The United Nations Cosmo Marines are part of the United Nations Cosmo Force. During the Great Garmillas War, between 2191 and 2199, they were deployed as firefighters on all of the war's front, and most of them were lost.[1][3]

On February 2199, the 7th Space Cavalry Regiment was stationed on the UNCF's Lunar Base and was almost entirely wiped out by a Garmillan attack. Its survivors were rescued by the UNCN flagship Kirishima and were sent to serve as an anti-riot security force in the Far-East District Underground City until the end of the conflict. Following the end of the war, the regiment became part of the Outer Defense Division. During his time in the division, Second Lieutenant Hajime Saito of the 7th Regiment began developing the Type 2 Space Mobile Armor to fight back in situations similar to the attack on the lunar base. On December 24, 2202,[11] when the Gatlantis Empire invaded the 11th planet the 7th Regiment fought in the Battle of the eleventh planet and was rescued by the battleship Yamato. Saito and the regiment remained aboard the ship for the rest of the Gatlantis Campaign, and aboard the ship the first Type 2 Mobile Armors were built.[1][2][5][12]

Following the end of the conflict the remaining soldiers of the 7th Regiment joined the 65th Escort Corps. In 2205, by using performance data from Saito's mobile armors, the Engineering Division developed the Type 5 Space Mobile Armor which was used by the 65th Escort Fleet's Cosmo Marines during the Iscandar Incident.[10][13]

Following the Iscandar Incident, the Space Cavalry unit attached to the 65th was turned into the Second Platoon, a unit directly under the command of the Space Cavalry's Commander-in-Chief. the platoon took part in the Invasion of the Ground Reverse.[14]

  • During the Great Garmillas War, the Cosmo Marines' uniform patch used the same color as the UNCN's rather than the currently used grey.[1][2]
  • During the planning stages for Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Journey, a suggested new name for the United Nations Cosmo Marines was "Earth Defense Cosmo Marine Corps" abbreviated E.D.C.M.[17]
