Space Battleship Yamato Wiki

The Earth-Garmillas security treaty[4] was a mutual security pact signed by the Greater Garmillan Empire and the Earth Federation in the aftermath of the Great Garmillas War. It's considered the first step taken by the Earth as an interplanetary nation.[2]

Backgroud[]

2202TimeFault

The time fault factory

Following the end of the Great Garmillas War, the Earth Federation and the Greater Garmillan Empire began building a friendly relationship. The ravaged Earth began post-war reconstruction thanks in part to a factory set up inside of an area of time distortion located under the Earth's surface.[5][3]

Treaty content and signing[]

The security treaty stated that, if one of the two nations was attacked, the other would enter to conflict to defend its ally.[5][6]

On top of this, secret agreements regarding the time fault were made. The Earth Federation sold part of their shipyard to Garmillas, and, in exchange, they received colony planets that the empire had no use for.[3] This accords included all the resources and the colonists present on said planets. Despite this, the Earth still maintained ownership over the time fault in general, giving it the power to destroy the area following a referendum in late 2203.[7]

The signing of the security treaty signified the start of an unofficial alliance between the Earth and Garmillas, and is considered the first step made by the Earth into intergalactic politics.[2]

Opposition[]

The signing of the treaty was not accepted by all Earthlings. Vocal oppositors of the treaty included the Anti-Government Security Committee, an organization headquartered in Moscow which organized strikes around the globe. Through their takeover of factories, notably an ordnance factory located in the Bōsō District, the committee financed the Destruction Liberation Army, a terror organization that fought against the Garmillas government.[4]

Violations[]

Garmillas destruction

Garmillas was destroyed in 2205

The Earth Federation violated the treaty in late 2205 when planet Garmillas was destroyed by an unknown enemy. The federation refused to send any reinforcement, fearing it could be dragged in yet another conflict. This fear was enhanced by the fact that the Bolar Federation, who was believed to be the possible instigator of the attack, had territory in the Milky Way, close to the Earth.[6]

The 65th Escort Corps arrives at Iscandar

Despite this being the official stance of the Earth Federation Defense Force, Deputy Commander Kotetsu Serizawa and EFCN Commander Osamu Yamanami subtly suggested Commander Susumu Kodai of the 65th Escort Corps to lead a mutiny and independently help the Garmillans. Following the Rookie Crew Rebellion aboard the flagship Yamato, the 65th Escort Corps joined the conflict on Garmillas' side.[6]
