The Destruction of the Lunar Base[6] was a Garmillas attack on the Earthling Lunar Base in early February 2199. The attack was carried out by a Pormelia-class Astro Assault Carrier, the same that would strike against the camouflaged Yamato during the Reconnaissance-in-force of the Yamato.[3]
The 7th Space Cavalry Regiment, which was stationed on the base as part of the Lunar Garrison, reported heavy casualties and losses including the regiment's commander, Colonel Goro Kiryu, who was fatally wounded during the attack.[3]
Following the battle the Cosmo Marines remained stranded near the base, and for two days they broadcasted an SOS hoping to be saved. Eventually, they were noticed and rescued by the battleship Kirishima after it completed its mission to escort the Yamato. However they came in too late and colonel Kiryu perished before he could be rescued.[3]
Sergeant Major Hajime Saito, a long date friend of Kiryu, confronted the one he believed to be the commander of Kirishima on why they were too late to answer their mayday. In actuallity the man he was yelling at was admiral Ryu Hijikata, commander of Space Defense Command. Despite the roughness of their initial meeting, Hijikata and Saito would forge a strong friendship in the months that would come.[3]
